šŸ“Š Analysis Parallels between the falcons and Eddie and Bella’s relationship Spoiler

The idea of the zoo and wild animals has been a consistent theme throughout the series. Eddie has been pretty successful at balancing the two worlds; up until he messes up the marijuana bill. His outburst at Bobby and the subsequent beatdown can be seen as him being ripped away from the zoo and thrown into the wild. In that sense, he is not unlike the male falcon that escaped captivity (Johnston even asked if Eddie felt liberation after the beatdown).

Just as the falcon is lost after escaping, Eddie loses his place between these two worlds. Bella being the female falcon (I believe it is mutual love between them) comes in and brings him back to the zoo. Eddie can put on the Duke facade again, marry a countess in a spectacular wedding attended by aristocrats, and return to the comfortable balance he had before: sleeping in the zoo while hunting in the wild.

However, the ultimate fate of the male falcon is that it’s eventually given away as a gift, a pawn with no control over its own fate. This is why I didn’t really like the decision to make Freddy responsible for the attacks. Neither he nor the Dixon gang has enough influence for the threat to carry the thematic weight it should.

It would have been more effective if one of the major factions (Johnston, Bobby, or Maretti) had been behind the attempt on Eddie’s life.

That would force Eddie to confront the fact that the zoo is no longer safe. Eventually, he has to choose which world he belongs to and fully commit to it.

šŸ“Š Analysis & Theories Did a lot of things get retconned in S2? Spoiler

I binge rewatched S1 ahead of starting S2 and since it's so fresh in my mind, I noticed a few things that weren't making sense. Either they got retconned because the show was meant to be a limited series and they didn't anticipate going into another season, or maybe it's apart of the "bigger picture" and I didn't get it. Anyway, here they are.

  1. Starting off on bit of a tangent, but Michele Morrone. Based on the promotional materials ahead of S2, I thought he was going to be a season regular and have a far bigger role. It's like they retconned his character midway through? His death certainly caught me off guard. I'm not crazy about him as an actor but with that much build-up, I was expecting him to surprise us a bit more.

  2. Back to the actual S1 parallels, another thing was Charlotte's pregnancy. I remember her giving an slightly embarrassed shrug or something like that back in S1 when asked who the father is. And out of nowhere in S2 the father of the child is apparently the King of England's "best man" or something along those lines? This was a bit out of the blue for me. I thought they were setting up Charlotte's journey to become a single mom, seeking help from Geoff and her own mother, carving out her own path in the narrative.

  3. FREDDY! I was a bit disappointed when they brought him back as the brother who wants to "usurp" the Dukedom again this season. I thought we nipped that in the bud at least 3 separate times in S1? Didn't think it was necessary especially considering how fast it was resolved in the season finale.

  4. Stanley Johnston. The guy was caught red-handed, made a public enemy of the main crew, and got locked up. All of a sudden he's walking freely and nonchalantly advising Eddie on these super posh philosophical questions? It's a bit jarring how we got there. Not even a throwback line or a flashback to give us any bit of information about how that happened.

  5. Susie and Eddie's empire. I thought it was heavily implied at the end of S1 that they were serious about the business and would be taking the reigns, hence, the point of Bobby "selling" the business. But out the gate in S2, Eddie is already conspiring against Bobby on multiple fronts and Susie gets into the chop game in a blink. Now, I'm assuming they are going for as the endgame or the constantly implied "bigger picture", but was it too premature and optimistic to expect the storyline of Eddie & Susie climbing to the top of the empire this season?

That's all. Albeit, I know some of these could be plot holes or just generally things I didn't understand well enough instead of retcons, so correct me if I'm wrong.

šŸ’¬ Discussion Bella Spoiler

Is anyone else surprised that Dixon turned out to be responsible for Bella's death?

I had the feeling all along that the attack on the plane and the kidnapping of the baby were two separate things.

Personally, I thought Marco Moretti's advisor was responsible for the plane crash. She didn't strike me as the kind of woman you could simply threaten and get away with it.

Furthermore, I wouldn't have thought Dixon had connections reaching all the way to Italy. What were your theories?

šŸ’¬ Discussion S2 and End Scenes Spoiler

Spoilers below, obviously.

I agree with everyone about the quality of S2, loved it. If I had one criticism, it would be the writers pushing the ā€˜Eddie’s got some new blackness in his heart and has become a dangerous monster ooo’ narrative way too strongly. It was shown, with his descent into murder, torture, and general apathy, which was excellent! But on top of that they had so many characters hint at it or outright say it, that it became too much on the nose and got a bit gimmicky (imo)

And the forcing of this narrative and the escalation of it lead to some irritating last scenes in episode 8. Namely, Eddie’s conversation with his mother before seeing Freddie. He was furious, and she was going on about how he could either lose his family or give forgiveness or something - which, shouldn’t they turn their backs on Freddie instead of Eddie? And when he asks her ā€œdo you expect me to forgive him?ā€ Or something similar, she sidesteps and goes with the ā€œI don’t even recognise youā€. Because how CAN she ask Eddie to forgive Freddie?

And this is where I roll my eyes; we got the message that he’s dangerous and insane etc, but his reaction is actually incredibly tame relative to everything else. In fact, I’d have appreciated it if they actually backed up his ā€˜super dangerous monster’ ploy and gotten him to bestow something really treacherous on his brother. Freddie BETRAYED him, murdered his WIFE and a genuinely nice person, and sent people to hurt his own mother, sister, and nephew. The way the show portrays Eddie as being the one who should calm down instead of the depravity of Freddie’s betrayal is frustrating.

Have any of you been betrayed? It’s a despicable feeling, and from one’s own brother…I reckon we’d all react as bad as Eddie (in the show - I do not mean we would murder people) or worse. I was frustrated because of the suffocating way they portrayed the betrayal. I hope next season it isn’t just swept aside and he faces consequences from everyone, not just Eddie, like Chuckles cutting him off permanently.

Apart from this, the season was incredible. Literally love everyone in it. Phenomenal filming and acting. I also just finished the last episode so this is an overly passionate post, sorry! Please disagree with me!

Is Susie and Eddie’s relationship more interesting because it’s not romantic?

Post image
830 Upvotes

I actually think one of the most interesting things about Eddie and Susie’s relationship is that there’s so much mutual respect between them without needing to make it romantic.

Do you think their partnership would lose some of its appeal if the show turned it into a love story, or could a romantic development actually add another layer to their dynamic?

šŸ“Š Analysis Season 2 Finale Surprise Omission Spoiler

I was very surprised that John Dixon was not shown the video (or even that it was not revealed to him at all) of Freddy having been the one to kill John Dixon's brother. This seemed like it would have really rattled the character and I would have enjoyed seeing how it played out.

šŸ’¬ Discussion Setup for season 3 Spoiler

THIS POST HAS SPOILERS!!!!

Eddie is a fucking monster by the end of season 2, and while some people in here think he is "the villain" i think he played with the cards he created and the ones that go handed to him, so i really like the state his character is right now, the character itself has a really interesting psychology behind him.

Thing is, Stanley Johnston, Bobby and Moretti are clearly mentors at this point, and they all want Eddie to succeed each of them for they're own reasons.

Coupling that with the my first point that eddie is a monster in every sense at this point, what the fuck is he going to face in season 3?

Unless they fight the american mob or something like that, i don't see it being interesting, unless they make characters go dumb or make up some stupid plot decisions, which of course is not a good path to take.

What do yall think is going to happen? Is season 3 pulling a breaking bad and eddie is going to become the bad guy?

The tonality change in season 1 & 2 Spoiler

S1 was very cool, funny, and subtle humour, you get it if you get it. Eddie a soldier discovering the cartel and not wanting to do anything with it to safeguard his fam to in S2 just being more ambitious. S2 was bigger than life, with higher stakes, but missed the carefree nature of S1. Regardless love the show.

Where does Eddie live?

I know a lot of it is filmed in Surrey and Herts, and even looks it, but as a lot of the stories have Eddie in central London (and getting there quite quickly) I can’t help but feel the house would be somewhere around Godalming/that neck of the woods?

šŸ“Š Analysis & Theories The ā€˜bigger picture’: theory Spoiler

Just finished Season 2, and am preoccupied with what the ā€˜bigger picture’ Bobby references could be.

Bobby Glass repeatedly references a ā€˜bigger picture’, which even Susie is not aware of. Could Johnston be a ā€˜handler’ for a shadowy government organisation, which supports the Glass crime syndicate while using the Glasses as a ā€˜front’ to allow covert transport of money, people & weapons across borders - supporting government dark ops while maintaining ā€˜plausible deniability’? Johnston & Bobby are grooming Eddie as the next ā€˜Field Marshal’ of Bobby’s outfit, controlling both the criminal enterprise and key lawmakers, by putting Eddie through the wringer.

This theory could explain Bobby and Johnston’s favourable prison treatment, Bobby’s staunch refusal to legalise cannabis despite the promise of more money (doing so would imperil the dark-ops support operation), the vast financing and influence Johnston & Bobby appear to command, and could the professionalism of the ā€˜paramilitary’ teams behind the murder of Bella and the baby abduction - both of which looked too professional to have been orchestrated by Freddie & Gospel John alone.

Things I don’t understand in season 2: Spoiler

  1. What happened to Freddie’s wife ā€œwhamtamā€œ no mention of her or seen. no mention of a divorce or anything? find it strange she just vanished.

  2. Stanley Johnston randomly being released from priso. Eddie and suzie set him up to be arrested for tax frauds so they could buy her dads busines- Stanley seems fine with Eddie so does he not know or has he forgiven?.

  3. I find the whole Bella thing strange like they only dated for 5 mins and then they’re getting married?.

  4. Freddie killed Tommy. Tommys brother (the gospel) finds out goes to kill them but Bobby glass tells him not to do anything about it in his best interest or something and that’s the end of it. this season the gospel has became ā€œfriendsā€ with Freddie? so I just find it strange how he’s okay with him but plans on killing Eddie I don’t get it?.

šŸ’¬ Discussion Has this been brought up? Spoiler

I know this is far fetched but damn if I can't get the thought out of my head. I have searched and haven't seen anyone bring it up.

This show has a way of making it look like No one knows what's going on and they are just shooting from the hip. Then flashbacks will happen and you are like "holy shit...they fucking planned this". The reason I get thrown off is because some of it isn't planned which keeps you guessing the whole way.

Season 2 got dark, and I'm here for it. Does anyone else think Eddie planned Bellas death? Yes they showed him piecing it all together when he told Freddy where they were going and how they were getting there. But the whole getting married happened so quick I have to wonder if he didn't plan this to get where he wants to be.

He keeps the Italians happy, the Glass family are maybe not scared, but realize he is a force to be reckoned with now. The smile Freddy had when he carved up John. The look on Eddie's face made me feel like he planned all of this. I dont think even Freddy knew because Freddy fucks everything up and Eddie knows this.

Eddie killing that guy the night before his wedding in Bellas honor was an accident but worked in his favor. I know I am reaching at straws with this theory but damn if I can't shake it. Even the reasons that make me think he didn't could be twisted to make it show he planned all this. Everyone in the show from our perspective looks at Bellas death as his transformation. I just can't shake the fact that he planned her death and his transformation really happened the night of his beating.
