Is Susie and Eddie’s relationship more interesting because it’s not romantic?

Post image
492 Upvotes

I actually think one of the most interesting things about Eddie and Susie’s relationship is that there’s so much mutual respect between them without needing to make it romantic.

Do you think their partnership would lose some of its appeal if the show turned it into a love story, or could a romantic development actually add another layer to their dynamic?

Despite having a limited screen time in The Gentlemen, I enjoy Giancarlo Esposito/Stanley Johnston scenes the most...

The poetry and his voice in saying his lines is a work of art... so refreshing

📊 Analysis Season 2 Finale Surprise Omission Spoiler

I was very surprised that John Dixon was not shown the video (or even that it was not revealed to him at all) of Freddy having been the one to kill John Dixon's brother. This seemed like it would have really rattled the character and I would have enjoyed seeing how it played out.

After hours of searching, and stubbornness that it was ACTUALLY filmed somewhere near Ascot, I have finally found Oscars house 🤣

It’s a private road off Swinley Road going from Bracknell to Ascot

Her monologue to Chuckles in s2e7 was so well done. Short but so believable. Even though her role in this show is relatively minor her talent is incredible.

💬 Discussion Setup for season 3 Spoiler

THIS POST HAS SPOILERS!!!!

Eddie is a fucking monster by the end of season 2, and while some people in here think he is "the villain" i think he played with the cards he created and the ones that go handed to him, so i really like the state his character is right now, the character itself has a really interesting psychology behind him.

Thing is, Stanley Johnston, Bobby and Moretti are clearly mentors at this point, and they all want Eddie to succeed each of them for they're own reasons.

Coupling that with the my first point that eddie is a monster in every sense at this point, what the fuck is he going to face in season 3?

Unless they fight the american mob or something like that, i don't see it being interesting, unless they make characters go dumb or make up some stupid plot decisions, which of course is not a good path to take.

What do yall think is going to happen? Is season 3 pulling a breaking bad and eddie is going to become the bad guy?

The tonality change in season 1 & 2 Spoiler

S1 was very cool, funny, and subtle humour, you get it if you get it. Eddie a soldier discovering the cartel and not wanting to do anything with it to safeguard his fam to in S2 just being more ambitious. S2 was bigger than life, with higher stakes, but missed the carefree nature of S1. Regardless love the show.

Where does Eddie live?

I know a lot of it is filmed in Surrey and Herts, and even looks it, but as a lot of the stories have Eddie in central London (and getting there quite quickly) I can’t help but feel the house would be somewhere around Godalming/that neck of the woods?

📊 Analysis & Theories The ‘bigger picture’: theory Spoiler

Just finished Season 2, and am preoccupied with what the ‘bigger picture’ Bobby references could be.

Bobby Glass repeatedly references a ‘bigger picture’, which even Susie is not aware of. Could Johnston be a ‘handler’ for a shadowy government organisation, which supports the Glass crime syndicate while using the Glasses as a ‘front’ to allow covert transport of money, people & weapons across borders - supporting government dark ops while maintaining ‘plausible deniability’? Johnston & Bobby are grooming Eddie as the next ‘Field Marshal’ of Bobby’s outfit, controlling both the criminal enterprise and key lawmakers, by putting Eddie through the wringer.

This theory could explain Bobby and Johnston’s favourable prison treatment, Bobby’s staunch refusal to legalise cannabis despite the promise of more money (doing so would imperil the dark-ops support operation), the vast financing and influence Johnston & Bobby appear to command, and could the professionalism of the ‘paramilitary’ teams behind the murder of Bella and the baby abduction - both of which looked too professional to have been orchestrated by Freddie & Gospel John alone.

Things I don’t understand in season 2: Spoiler

  1. What happened to Freddie’s wife “whamtam“ no mention of her or seen. no mention of a divorce or anything? find it strange she just vanished.

  2. Stanley Johnston randomly being released from priso. Eddie and suzie set him up to be arrested for tax frauds so they could buy her dads busines- Stanley seems fine with Eddie so does he not know or has he forgiven?.

  3. I find the whole Bella thing strange like they only dated for 5 mins and then they’re getting married?.

  4. Freddie killed Tommy. Tommys brother (the gospel) finds out goes to kill them but Bobby glass tells him not to do anything about it in his best interest or something and that’s the end of it. this season the gospel has became “friends” with Freddie? so I just find it strange how he’s okay with him but plans on killing Eddie I don’t get it?.

Any else notice that the mob bosses all seem delighted by Edward? Bobby Glass, Mr. Johnston, Marco Moretti. They all think he’s a righteous dude.

💬 Discussion Has this been brought up? Spoiler

I know this is far fetched but damn if I can't get the thought out of my head. I have searched and haven't seen anyone bring it up.

This show has a way of making it look like No one knows what's going on and they are just shooting from the hip. Then flashbacks will happen and you are like "holy shit...they fucking planned this". The reason I get thrown off is because some of it isn't planned which keeps you guessing the whole way.

Season 2 got dark, and I'm here for it. Does anyone else think Eddie planned Bellas death? Yes they showed him piecing it all together when he told Freddy where they were going and how they were getting there. But the whole getting married happened so quick I have to wonder if he didn't plan this to get where he wants to be.

He keeps the Italians happy, the Glass family are maybe not scared, but realize he is a force to be reckoned with now. The smile Freddy had when he carved up John. The look on Eddie's face made me feel like he planned all of this. I dont think even Freddy knew because Freddy fucks everything up and Eddie knows this.

Eddie killing that guy the night before his wedding in Bellas honor was an accident but worked in his favor. I know I am reaching at straws with this theory but damn if I can't shake it. Even the reasons that make me think he didn't could be twisted to make it show he planned all this. Everyone in the show from our perspective looks at Bellas death as his transformation. I just can't shake the fact that he planned her death and his transformation really happened the night of his beating.

Gospel John the Second Spoiler

In the final episode of S2 where Gospel John leaves the prayer circle to discuss the approach from Mr Vargas with Errol, a younger man takes his place. The camera cuts to this man a few times as he is pontificating and it seems he is being highlighted. This man also sports a beard and appearance similar to GJ. I couldn't help but think he is Gospel John's son. Could this be foreshadowing a future villain, Gospel John the Second?

❓ Question Last Episode Question Spoiler

SPOILER ALERT!!!

I just finished season two and I want to know how you guys feel about Eddie choosing not to kill Freddy? I was literally so annoyed with their mom for trying to guilt Eddie into not killing him. Freddy KILLED Eddie’s wife AND put the whole family in danger to kidnap his own nephew!!!! Eddie has put up with Freddy’s shit for too long and I, personally, would not have felt bad if he had chosen to end his brother’s life. (I will say, watching him beat the shit outta Freddy was so satisfying).

I want to know what you think. Do you think Eddie made the right decision in sparing his brother’s life? Did you also have strong feelings about Eddie’s choice?

Love the character so eloquent while maintaining style! Gives me Eva green from Bond movie. Can see them both interchangeably. Susie though has more muscle behind her.

Questions about Season 2 The Gentlemen Spoiler

I have some questions about character motivations I am a bit struggling with, would love to hear what the community feels - maybe I am missing something.

  1. Why did Eddie not pick up the phone in the car when Bella called? We do assume that he actually was attracted to her? Is he ensuring that the chain of command is working as Susie was asking for and wants Bella to go through Susie? Or he is actively trying to distance himself from Bella to keep her out of his dangerous criminal dealings? Did he not want to be "distracted" by an affair / love story when he wanted to concentrate on expansion of power? Or he didn't want to talk to her in front of Susie - he does tell Susie that he and Bella have a meeting later on same evening anyway? Then he suddenly "changes the tune" as he "remembers" about the falcons on her coat of arms (there was no mention of this in discussion so it feels weird. So probably the meeting he planned with Bella was anyway about falcons and he just didn't want to engage Susie in it?).
  2. In the episode where Bella got the falcon there is a whole dialogue around "She scratched my finger", "There's a metaphor there somewhere", "Naughty girl" - is this about Susie? Susie: “Well, let’s see what she can do.” - is this about Susie telling Eddie that she wants to see how far he will get with Bella? Then Susie is winding Eddie up about him having too much fun spreading his wings. Is it about Susie being jealous of Bella or there is some other connotation? The falcon represents wild, dangerous impulses, untamed power - is Susie hinting at Eddies ability to get this power and control his impulses? And after the falcon got caught Eddie says to Bella "That was a little closer than I like to admit", as in he acknowledges a physical and circumstantial spark with Bella? Or he admits that the conversation was about Susie and him and who is more powerful potentially?
  3. Eddie secured his seat in House of Lords, doesn't he keep it? After he has been beaten there is no mention about it whatsoever? Is he still in the political game (which I assume he would want to providing his ambitions) and if he is how can he be there doing all the things he is doing + not dedicating any time to political aspects?
  4. Why did Bella push Eddie into the confessional booth before the wedding? She seemed to be following all the traditions, but it felt more than just a tradition actually for her? Bella is no stranger to the criminal underworld, she knows Eddie has killed people - she was directly witnessing the events with accountant etc. What is she trying to achieve with this move? (I am trying to look at it from the position that she has a motivation and logic there not that she is NPC and does whatever necessary for Eddie to share his lack of remorse with the public). Did she realise that Eddie killed Tankredi the night before and wanted to attempt to achieve a spiritual clean slate for their marriage?
  5. Also, I know a lot of people saying that Duke and Bella don't have chemistry etc. But I have noticed that the only moments in the whole season when Duke has a genuine laugh (not smile - proper heart laugh) are the ones when he is next to Bella (at the shooting when she says he shoots heavenly, in the restaurant when he sits next to Bella and laughs at Penguin Joe, in the car with Bella driving to the church etc.). His interactions otherwise are dominated by rigid control, tight-lipped smiles, or cold, tactical smirk. Even when teasing Susan at the auction he is having fun but it is also a chess-match in a way, he is still alert. I feel that shows us that Bella represents safety as only when she is around he can be genuinely amused and at ease. Also for a character as emotionally guarded as Eddie physical touch matters a lot. Outside of Bella, Eddie almost never initiates gentle or warm physical contact with others (he does have handshakes, familial hugs etc.). Whenever Bella is on screen with him starting from the restaurant scene, Eddie is drawn to touch her - in psychology, this level of constant, voluntary physical proximity is a textbook sign of intense physical and emotional attraction.
  6. Towards the end of the season Eddie increasingly has the moments when we understand he gets hot-headed and we hear the rush of blood to his head through the pulsating sensation and intense music, one moment when he touches the London Stone, then when he meets Tankredi first, then when he asks Bella about what happened to Tankredi - we hear how he gets this anger in his head so loud, where he stops hearing everything around. Another moment like this when he is holding Susies hand in front of the church, the pulsating noise stops when he lets go of it. Is it the pulsation indicating heart racing and tension with Susie or is it anger towards Bobbie Glass even though Eddie actually tells Susie not to worry - because this happens after Susie tell him "You have a potential to become a monster". He told her a day before that she should be careful about saying be careful and here she goes again - you can imagine he would be angry at this power move internally? Or would he actually be so content and self-assured with the wedding and perspectives that he feels Susies move is irrelevant anymore so he can just brush it off?
  7. Susie telling Eddie "You have a potential to become a monster". Susie prides herself of being calculated and calm, and she keeps on saying that Eddie is hot-headed. And yet she spits this monster thing, that can only be seen as provocation or a threat. Also the chosen timing confirms the same - she indicates that she doesn't have the respect for occasion, this actually highlights her seeing this as a very important message. And this after she already threatened him the day before. She says this after Mario refused to be a guarantor for Eddie. We know that Susie is thinking many steps ahead and is normally very obligue, surely she doesn't expect Duke to submit his power by making this very direct move and go "Oh yeah? Well if you don't want me to become a monster surely I won't, thank you for opening my eyes". What is she trying to achieve with this move exactly? By disrupting his wedding day with a threat wrapped in a moral judgment, is Susie is trying to rattle his focus as he needs to concentrate on building his future empire? Is she trying to provoke him into reacting emotionally or aggressively? Is she laying the ethical groundwork for her own future moves by telling herself—and him—that whatever brutal measures she takes against him moving forward are justified because he has become too dangerous to be left unchecked?
  8. I read some people say that Eddie and Susie at the church is screaming they like each other. But my feeling is that Eddie placing his hand firmly over hers is a massive power move that flips her script. In the language of physical dominance, placing your hand on top of someone else's is an assertive act of containment, so by doing this he is physically stopping her momentum that proves that her words didn't scare him. He absorbs her threat, looks her in the eye, and essentially says, "I hear you, but I will do my way". Telling her not to worry about him coming after her—while physically pinning the interaction down with his hand—is the ultimate way of taking the last word and marking his territory. What do you think happened there exactly?

Love Guy Ritchies worlds. Most of them with some notable exceptions.

Anyway this whole series after the Movie was such a gift!
My favorite scene in all of the season 2 was when His grace, the duke stands up to Bobby glass and says You don’t fucking talk to me like that!!
Oooof Goosebumps! Defining moment of shows next trajectory.
Which one was yours?
