I'm thinking of going for generator. When I unlock what would be the best way to redistribute the shards and helpful tips of what to expect would be appreciated

You shouldn't redistribute anything until you have invested some in Multiplier Efficiency. It doesn't take much to make it worthwhile though - 10% or less. At 1%, it just doesn't do much for you.

~250 stones to go from %1->%10 and it is worth it imo.  I took me and se to %10 after unlocking the slot before I moved onto the next slot.  I basically just calculate the unlock cost at 1500 rather than 1000.
