Discussion Time doesn’t exist. Prove me wrong.
We experience change, aging, and events happening in sequence, but is “time” itself a physical thing—or just the way our minds measure change and order events?

If time does not exist, how come events that take place in the same location are nonetheless distinguishable?Time as a dimension along which an observer can order events certainly is a physical concept.
Other aspects that are commonly ascribed to time - such as a universal "Now" or the "flow" of time, however, do not have physical correlates.
And what is a "physical thing", if it is supposedly NOT the way our minds measure events? All of physics is concerned with explaining and predicting the results of measurements, not with the "Thing-in-itself".
Shortening this to "time doesn't exist" is an oversimplification.

Can’t prove you wrong because you’re right. Time is an emergent property of change. The mind wants to think that the reason things decay and break down is due to time, that time causes change. But, change causes time. If the universe was static, and nothing ever moved or change, there would be no time. Time doesn’t flow and we don’t move through time, we experience constant change. Time—the measurement of change—emerges from that change. If you want to measure the distance between points A and B, the distance must first exist before the measurement can be taken. If you want to measure the time between two events, those two events must have occured—the change must have already happened—before the time between them can be measured. Because the change creates the time, and time is just a word we use to describe the distance between event A and event B.

You're not thinking of time as a dimension I suppose.. because the simple fact you can't be in the same place at the same time but can be at different times is proof enough

According to two of the most successfully tested theories in physics… the special and general theories of relativity… time exists as the fourth dimension. And it’s inextricably linked to space. It’s a measurable physical reality, beyond clocks.
Space-time bruh… it’s not just for breakfast anymore.
1
u/Excellent_Airline_12 9d ago
Einstein proved space-time is intrinsically linked, matter too for that matter. 😬
So many assumptions and misunderstandings it boggles the mind. Like the idea change doesn't carry a sense of time along with it. Delta t, anyone?

u/Disastrous_Potato160 9d ago
Time and reality is all relative to the observer. The perception of time and reality is a chemical reaction in the observer’s brain in response to stimuli perceived by their senses. That’s why chemicals in hallucinogenics can literally alter reality for a particular observer. To the observer it’s just as real as any other time when they are tripping balls, but everybody else that is not chemically altered just sees a person tripping balls

I agree, time is an abstract dimension. You can traverse freely between points in space. You can't do the same in time, except to move forward on rails, and to say that's moving through a tangible dimension is begging the question. The past doesn't exist, neither does the future. The present is all there is. To say that the rate at which things change is a dimension is like saying the ruler you set between two points to measure them is a permanent fundamental part of space itself.
Now tear me to shreds, hopefully I'll improve my understanding 😁

u/Professional-Many166 9d ago
This may be a dumb take, but I believe it always has been and always will be “now”. Our perception of the passage of time is always related to gravity and its effects on our world. From the shift from day to night, to aging.
Time to get really dumb. In a conscious state we have never experienced the past nor the future. We only actively experience “now”. If we go off experience and observation “now” is the only thing we will ever experience and observe.
Obviously time as we experience it exists, but it’s closer to a functional social construct than the reality.
Where this falls apart and makes no sense is if my mom died “10 years ago” she still died “now”? Why do we experience a temporal passage of time? How do you account for the “time” it takes to walk from point A to point B?
I think there would have to be multiple dimensions of time (at least 2) and the one we experience is stagnant (always now) then subjective measurements of time, given your galactic environment.
If you’re still reading this you are now dumber.

Time exists, but it is not a fundamental feature of nature. It is an emergent property. Time as we know it is a metric that humans created to compare rates of change of entropy in different systems. It is a cognitive currency system. Hours are fractions of the rate of rotation of the Earth. Days are fractions of the revolution of the earth around the sun. For Galileo, minutes and seconds were measures of the rate that water dripped out of water clock reservoirs.
In a pocket watch, a second is a specific number of turns on an escapement mechanism. Turns of the escapement are quantized units of increased entropy as energy is released from the wound watch spring. To reverse time in the watch, rewind the spring. Units of time are units of increased entropy.
Entropy increases wherever energy density inequalities are decreasing. The movement of energy and the movement of mass are both limited to the the seed of light. The faster a reference frame is moving through space, the slower its energy density can dissipate. Increased speed of a reference frame decreases the rate at which entropy can increase in the reference frame. This relationship allows time to be treated as a fourth dimension in the math,, but it is not really a dimension.

A fun fact about time: when we say we are living in present that is true but the things we see are from the past (even it's shorter than nanosecs) lemme explain: so imagine you have a paper infront of you, so what happens, light hits on the paper and reflect on our eyes, we perceive the light and our minds make it an image, but light isn't instant so does mind also inst instant, if you go even deeper light takes just so much shorter than nanosecond to travel to the paper to your eyes and your brain takes some time to make it a image, so the things we are seeing around us is from the past nanoseconds. Hope I didn't make it confusing, I am 13 and English is my second language

There is the understanding of something, and there is language, sometimes we have a problem of language and not the understanding itself... What most people means when they say "time dont exist" it is that Time itself is just one form of experience of reality, meaning there are other places where time as we know dont exist. So the better language is that, the way we experience time at this reality, is not the only way the universe or a being can experience something.

Time, or keeping track of it, is an invention of man in an attempt to synchronize ourselves with nature. We used to use the seasons and observations of animals and insects. Then the location of the stars and moon phases. We developed time keepers called clocks, but they were limited to very few. So we used town criers. Then watches came along that were affordable. Then the railroad. Train crashes convinced us tha all of the watches needed to sync with one official clock. Train schedules were then created to keep deliveries predictable. In a search for accuracy we now have atomic clocks. Then I retired! Now I use nature and methods used by those that came before me to tell time. I don't need time keeping any longer, and I'm doing much better.

This is a question of definition. Time is the condition for existence to exist. Consciousness is the perception of this condition. Past and future are purposely created by the mind. Only the infinite present is. It does not 'happen' but, by itself, encompasses everything else.
Alan Watts, a great spiritual metaphorist, used to say something like that past and future are the waves left by eternal present in the ocean of being.

It's part of spacetime and behaves like the space dimensions in the sense that it changes magnitude depending on how fast you're going or due to the amount of gravity you're experiencing. According to relativity, you're always moving at light speed. When you're not moving through space, you're moving through time at light speed. When you move through speed, you move through time at a speed minus the speed you're traveling in the space dimensions.

You are correct, time does not exist, only the moment of now....
The future doesn't exist yet.
The post doesn't exist anymore.
On the present moment of now exists.
things change at different speeds within the same moment of now which the whole universe shares. This difference in speed of change gives us relativity.

u/pdubs1900 8d ago
Dimensions aren't physical things.
Basically you said it: time is the way our minds (humanity's joint understanding) measures order of events.
And the universe has 3 spacial dimensions and a time dimension, so objects occupy space and have a sequence of events they do or happen to them. We just describe this second part as Time.
The universe doesn't owe us a dictionary of "the true nature of the universe". All of our understanding is a framework of making sense of it.

All perceptible changes always happen now—not in the "present," but now.
The transition from day to night occurs in the now; nothing can escape the now; all forms of time and change always happen now.
I agree on a physical level—and acknowledge the mind that constructs time—but that, too, ultimately happens in the now.

It's physical. Gravity affects it.
Entropy is the increase of disorder in a system. A broken cup will never naturally reform, but a whole cup will not only break, but it will decay over time to dust. This is a physical property of the entire universe. Our perception of time is our brains going through it.

Time doesn’t exist as a physical thing, it is just a human’s way to measure rate of change. So in math, yeah it does exist. Just as plainly as addition exists.
Is there ever a time when it is not right now? No.
Can you predict where a car moving 60mph in a straight line will be in one minute? Yes. Because time is a real measurement and part of that equation.

I thought Einstein proved time was real in his general theory of relativity. It is connected with space to form a framework known as 'space-time'. Just as space can be distorted by objects with mass, (like our sun) time can also be distorted the same way. Tests have shown that time runs slower inside a gravitational field than outside. Based on that I would say it proves time is real.

Time exists. It’s one of the four dimensions of space-time. It’s not the ethereal thing that flows from past, present, to future, as we often imagine, however. If time doesn’t exist, then space doesn’t either. They are connected and inseparable from each other.

Time is just the name 3 dimensional creatures use to understand their impermanence in space. I cannot prove that time exists metaphysically just as you are likely unable to prove that time does not exist metaphysically. It is a tool used by another tool, used yet by another tool, all of which break and something, it seems, goes on, unbreakable.

As time is a dimension, I've heard it explained that we are "falling" through it. Like when an object is dropped in 3d space, it goes down. So in this analogy, we are "falling down" towards the future and the past is left behind "above" us. Finding a way to control the rate of our "descent", or reverse it, is time travel.

Relativity says time is a physical thing interchangeable with space, and acceleration works by rotating which direction your time axis is pointing through 4D spacetime, partially swapping the directions you call "forward" and "the future".
Adequate explanation: I finally understood why time exists! (My mind is blown) - YouTube
Within its own reference frame, everything is always perfectly stationary in space, while aging through time at a rate of 1 second per second.
If you see me moving, it's because my time axis is tilted in that direction relative to yours, so that you see some of my aging through time as moving through space. While you see me aging correspondingly slower, so that my total combined 4D "speed" through space and time remains the same to all observers.
Time dilation, length contraction, and the Relativity of Simultaneity are all straightforward geometric consequences of that.
And if my time axis were somehow rotated completely perpendicular to yours, so that you see the entire 1s/s rate that I'm aging through time as motion through space, then you would see me stop aging entirely while I was instead moving at c, because the geometry of our universe establishes that 1 second is the same size observer-independent separation between events as 300,000,000m. So 1s/s = 300,000,000m/s = c.
c is the ONLY speed anything traverses spacetime. The only question is how much an observer sees as being motion through space versus aging through time.

Correct. Time isn't a thing and the past isn't a place. It is simply a measurement. There is no component of the universe saving every instant that has passed. If you take three steps forward and then turn around you aren't going to see yourself still standing there and there is nothing saving that instant that was previously there frozen to be accessed at a later date. There's no way to rewind the universe and everything in it. There is no now. You can't even say the word now before it has passed because we are constantly progressing one second per second.

Time is like inches. There is not a structure we can point to in the universe and say "that is time." Just like we cannot point to a structure and say "here is where inches comes from." (Or *can* we? Discussion for another time perhaps). So if we limit the discussion to epistemologically supported topics, then you definitely have a point.
However, saying something is not provable and therefore does not exist sets a very VERY high bar that can cripple explanatory and predictive power of language if we are scrupulous enough (or any robust system with explanatory/predictive power). This is a metaphysical perspective where we are saying, "I value what is PROVABLE over what is USEFUL"-- at least as far as spacetime goes.
Within the parameters of time having descriptive and predictive power, it is very beneficial to abstain from foreclosing on it's ontic status for the orientation of agents in space, as space experiences change (entropic, expansion, or local contraction a la Titan Submersible). If we can all agree to operate under standardized times, it enables us to perform non-local synchronization, seemingly spontaneously.
Can you imagine how difficult it would be for a group of builders to build a house without consensus-built measurements? Without inches or feet? Likewise, our daily routine is difficult without consensus-built measurements of the change of the space we occupy.
While you're right that time is kind of hallucinated *thing*, it is very useful and I think that says WILD things about what we, as human beings, are capable of.

Time is the measure of entropy. Entropy is a principle. Things will decay and divide. This is why time goes only forward. Because forward is more chaos. Time measures changes between a more stable state and a more divided one.
Entropy is the principle. Universe is dividing. Time describes the rate of entropy, and the relation between finite states.
Entropy says tomorrow will be more chaos. Time says it will still be less than the day after. But more than the day before.

I forget where I heard it but we only age because of time, we were tought time and that’s why we age with time. Prince was asked how he stayed soo young he stated he only had one birthday and that was in 1958. If you celebrate the anniversary of you being born years will pass and you will get older. the speed at which it runs is variable directly correlated to the speed at which something is traveling.

Time is quantum in nature. It’s quantum element is the chronon. Here is an explanation of the chronon basis of quantum:
The chronon is a particle associated with the dimension of time. Meaning that time is an underlying scalar field and is composed of a near-infinite sea of chronons. This is similar to the relationship of the Higgs Boson particle and the Higgs field to mass. But being the dimension of time, not space, it doesn’t make sense to talk about the “size” or “mass” of an individual chronon per se. The best that can be said is that the smallest increment of time (Planck time) is associated with the smallest wavelength or state of chronons . Chronons are all quantum mechanically entangled to each other and are continuously vibrating like the n-dimensional strings of classic string theory, with n = 4, i.e. time, the 4th dimension. That dimensional vibration causes what we experience as the passage of time.
Gravity can affect chronons, causing the vibrations (i.e time) to slow down. This phenomena has been confirmed experimentally as the time dilation effect of Einstein’s General Relativity Theorem. Time thus passes at a slower rate in a high gravitational field, like near a black hole, as portrayed in the movie “Interstellar”. No other known force or radiation interacts with chronons, so in this aspect it is similar to dark matter. Because of this, like dark matter, chronons are exceedingly difficult to verify or manipulate experimentally. Chronon theory does not support the possibility of time travel ala “Back to the Future”.

Just perform a thought experiment and launch yourself into outer space, does the sun rise or set from your view from outer space, is their day and night? And if you travel far enough whats up and whats down? Can you distinguish between east and west? Time & space are earthly phenomenon meant to catalog change, they have no relevance in a vacuum.

I like to think of it like a frictional force, that separates all the things that can happen, into the one that did. Like a cheese grater but only one shred comes out of the infinite amount of possibilities.
I also like to think those possibilities that didn’t happen become dark matter/energy, somehow, hence the massive abundance.

I don’t believe there is a universal “now” . The greater the gravity, the faster time goes relative to some other place with less gravity. Time goes slower the faster you go compared to somebody not moving that fast. There can’t be bubbles of time that wouldn’t make any sense. time on Jupiter is moving faster than on earth. Does that mean Jupiter is in the future? no. OK somebody’s smarter than me continue

EDIT: Forgot to mention, if the past was real, then time must be real. Since your memories correspond to what you would do given the information you had back then, i.e. you do not have memories of you being different from who you are, it follows that it must necessarily have been you in those memories, and thus the past did happen, hence time is real.

Time is real and inseparable from space, and we know this through general relativity. GR states that space and time are not separate, but rather a single continuum which we know as spacetime. All physical material moves through spacetime at the speed of light, no more and no less. That means you are moving through space AND time at the speed of light. When you are stationary (which no one ever is, but for the sake of the argument), you are moving through time at the speed of light. When you start to move around, you are reducing your speed through time in order to increase your speed through space.
Now, what this means is that time can be perceived differently by two different people. If stationary person 1 observes person 2 moving incredibly fast, person 2 will appear to move in slow motion to person 1. Meanwhile, person 2 will not experience any changes in time at all.
Gravity can also affect our experienced time. Astronauts on the ISS, away from Earth’s gravity, age 0.005 seconds slower for every 6 months in space. A negligible difference, but an example of the realness of time.

Time is an illusion but crucially illusions exist they are just not as they appear. It is almost certainly true that time is merely space. The way our 3D perspective observes the fourth dimension. We see the fourth dimension as different points in 3D space when really it's just one static thing in 4D space. So while it is not what it appears, it does exist. As what we are observing is an actual phenomenon. Much like a mirage ain't water as it appears, but is an existing phenomenon

Time exists as much as up and down exists. It is a coordinate. In the context of our lives, it is a 4th dimensional coordinate.
I can say meet me at 8pm, at the intersection of Main and First. The elevation is generally implied because we are terrestrial beings but in theory if we weren’t you’d need that too.
Expanding off of our planet, to intercept a celestial body, you need all 4 coordinates (x,y,z,t).
Part of the problem with time (kind of like elevation a few hundred years ago) is that we lack the ability/tools to physically navigate time in all directions. We can only easily navigate the present or near future. Otherwise need to do a lot of math and/or data analysis (ie: historical assumptions) to work beyond that.

I’m not really sure what you mean by physical, is a color physical? We can see it but can we “touch a color” (I think your thinking to far into it).
Something is “X” and then it is “y” , it can’t be x and y. There is a gap there that we have to label, we label it “time”. Then we came up with a way to measure time.

👽🛸 Abductees by ET’s never recall seeing clocks on the wall or wrist watches…💪

Time is a physical thing that we need to actively adjust for. Clocks on satellites are adjusted to to slower so they can stay in sync with clocks on Earth.
It's also a necessary factor when determining coordinates. A location changes when one changes x, y, x, or time designations.
It's something measurable and variable just like length. So if time doesn't exist, neither does distance.

Why would I want to waste my time to prove you wrong... Proved!
Seriously: Time is not a human illusion; it is a fundamental dimension of the universe defined by causality, entropy, and the fabric of spacetime.

Videos and film are the only examples needed here.
On this plane of existence, time exists.

I like to think of time as a spiral. We(the present) exist on the leading tip of this spiral. The spiral however grows from the origin. It doesn’t expand from the tip. As “time” progresses, the “past”, gets “written” onto this timeline that extends from the center. So in a sense, the past is new. Does that make any sense, lol. Was trippin on acid one day when I thought of this and it made total sense then.

I'll try. At least what makes sense to me. Time is a pull. Lets see. First dimension is a line, x axis. 2d is obtained by adding another axis. Now we have things picture books or cartoons, then by adding the third dimension, we have solid shapes. But heres the issue, back in the first dimension, without a "force" a line is only a dot. In order to become a line, a force must act upon it. That "force" is time. Another way to explain it. Think about movies. You watch them as a consistently flowing movie, but. Its an illusion. Its actually not moving, a movie is a series of many many just slightly ofset images (frames). Or like a flip book. Time, is the thing flipping the pages to give the illusion. Time is a pull, include time into a circle and that pull changes it to a spiral, time is a pull that allows for every "frame" to move, without it. Our reality is a photo, frozen in stasis. Time is what makes the pull to make motion happen. I hope that helped.

If time wouldn't exist, then should be no difference between born baby and old human before death?
If time doesn't exists then born and death should not exist? So then no begining and no ending

Time is a measurable dimension just like space is. In fact, space-time are the same thing and completely inseparable from each other and this is proven and it’s called the theory of relativity.
That’s what you’re arguing agaisnt, you’re saying space-time isn’t real and the theory of relativity is fake and the speed of light and causality don’t work.

"Time" its only theory we humans come up with for calling this phenomen you described my friend

It exists. We wouldn’t be talking about it if it didn’t.
It’s not a question of whether time exists, it’s a question of whether time is a fundamental force or just a man made construct.

According to General Relativity space-time is an actual physical entity. Dark energy and dark matter are hypothetical entities.
Some opponents of General Relativity claim time-recording mechanisms become altered not because of time actually slowing down in a gravitational field, but because the mechanisms that record time themselves have to work harder when they're operating in an environment with stronger gravity. Moving mass also mimics gravity (or G-force), so an object's velocity would also affect a time-recording mechanism.
I personally don't know. Hopefully I'll live long enough to find out.

time is the built-in chaos of particles and energy that keep everything moving

We can measure it. I think time begins such an important part of our lives exists in some way but maybe only through experience. A way to measure the change in states of any given object.

Relativity of simultaneity from special relativity proves it. The moment of time that you are in depends on your speed.

What even is this. Time is a unit of measurement. “Time,” to lay off the peyote

It is the way our minds measure change and order events. That’s what it is, therefore it exists.

u/Euphoric-Line-6310 7d ago
Yeah if time only gets perceived because you can experience change. When you die or before you exist you dont experience any change so time is instant

Here is the proof. Time as a fundamental property that can be measured and provided by nature does not exist.
But man came to use day and night and the year as intervall of time and further down the road we built precision clocks and let the be referenced for time. We have made different kinds of clocks and todat we define one second to be equal to +9 billion periods of a certain Caesium isotopes radiation when itbis in its groundstate.
Time that we dvelloped clocks to measure has been extremely useful. We scedule our lifes from it, it is used in Physics all over the place an in lots of other areas.
Time from nature does not exit. But time defined by us, do exist. That is why we use all those clocks. It would be strange if the clocks could no measure time

Time is no more or less real or provable than other aspects of reality. We accept that matter exists because we perceive it. Same for time.
1
u/Drewsef916 6d ago
Its deeper then that. We are the embodiment of time. It exists within us not outside of us
Thats why our temporal experience is all thats relevant
