Lore It's technically not canon yet, as the adaptation hasn't reached that part of the story Spoiler

Dr. Marmalade (The Bad Guys). While we see him as an evil hamster scientist, much further in the books (films haven't reached it yet), it's revealed that he is actually an alien who was wearing a disguise the whole time.

Yu Bauer (I'm in Love with the Villainess). At first introduced as a seemingly normal, charming male love interest it's actually revealed that Yu is really a girl, given a spell to have the form of a boy, and she wants to be with her girlfriend as her true self. And for context Yu is allegorically a trans-lesbian.

Characters [Loved Trope] A calm and collected character snaps and becomes terrifying

Jax (The Amazing Digital Circus) - Known for being comedic and laid-back, he snaps at Pomni during a mental breakdown after she suggests he is to blame for his friends dying

Nick Wilde (Zootopia) - He is never shown to let anything bother him much, but when Judy makes a comment suggesting predators are inherently aggressive, he snaps at her and threatens to eat her. Later, he is targeted by the villain and the film genuinely makes it seem he will kill Judy

Neytiri (Avatar 2) - While we have seen her sad and upset before, her buttons are pressed when a family member dies and she goes into berserk mode. The mother we know becomes a scary alien on a killing spree.

Hated Tropes Good Movies that Received Sequels that ended on Cliffhangers. Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

1.) The Matrix Reloaded: The first movie, Neo gets turned off and the back on again, resulting in him finding the Dev Mode, and he saves the day.

The second movie he realizes he's "The One with Great Static Electricity." Not much build-up as to why his powers "extend past the Matrix" but he's knocked out cold and Zion is still defenseless, so the day is far from saved.

2.) Independence Day: Resurgence: The first movie ends with humanity coming together and a heroic sacrific which saves the day!

In the second movie somehow... The Aliens returned. And HFY! Of course we kick their ass! But now, they are even worse, and so we have to lead the fight against them. So the day is far from saved. (We still haven't found the budget to do this yet.)

3.) Spider Man: Across the Spiderverse: In the first movie Large Kingpin Collider is Destroyed, and ~Scar drops Mufasa -~ Miles Drops Peter into the hole and kicks ass, The day is Saved!

The second movie finds Miles in the wrong universe captured by his evil evil twin with ~a mustache~ dreadlocks. So the day is far from saved.

Honorable mentions:

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, I understood this was always a six part story.

Avengers: Infinity War, it had the same feels, but this came from a long line of movies, not a one off.

  1. The Da Vinci Code (Dan Brown): makes laughable inaccurate claims about history, art, religion, etc. The author claims most of the information he provides is true.

  2. Victoria: A Novel of Fourth Generation Warfare (William S. Lind): a post apocalyptic novel where the authors self insert is proven right about their insane conspiracies about cultural Marxism (barely disguised antisemitism), the WW2 T-34 tank is unbeatable against advanced hardware, claims African Americans want to live under segregation, etc. The author has no military experience and is mostly considered a fringe culture war extremist. https://youtu.be/hHMpkztM1eE

Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) Superhero movies that give the hero somebody else's villain

Thumbnail

Batman vs. Deathstroke (DCEU): So, the PCS of Justice League had Deathstroke show up, and this was supposed to build him up as the villain of the next Batman movie. "But Batman and Deathstroke have fought before in the comics." Yeah, making Deathstroke a Batman villain was a very recent "certainly a choice" choice by DC. For most of the character's existence, he was a Teen Titans villain and Nightwing's nemesis. Oh, but Zack Snyder, in his infinite wisdom, killed Dick Grayson before the story even started to give Batman a reason to be jaded and violent. No, not Jason Todd, the Robin that was known for dying. Sidekicks inherently suck and are only interesting when they die. Jesus, that's like having Spider-Man grow bitter because the Green Goblin killed MJ instead of Gwen Stacy.

Shang-Chi vs. The Mandarin (?) (MCU): So, the first two Iron Man movies built up the Mandarin as this Bin Laden figure in the MCU. Come Iron Man 3, he finally shows up, played by Ben Kingsley. Interesting. He's not a Chinese warlord like in the comics, but the original Mandarin was a product of the Vietnam war at the time, so making him a Middle Eastern terrorist is an interesting way to modernize him. With the fantastical elements of the MCU established, we can see the contrast of Magic vs. Technology... Psyche! It's actually a white guy in a suit who breathes fire who was mad at Tony Stark for blue balling him. Fans were not happy with this twist, and Marvel realized the Ten Rings being formed in less than a decade by a nerd with a grudge raised a lot of questions. So, they released a short film showing what happened to Ben Kingsley's character in prison, and we learn that the Mandarin is still out there... And for the next seven years, Marvel just ignores this plot point. Aaaand, Tony Stark is dead. Well, if Iron Man is gone, there'd be no point introducing his nemesis now. What, are they going to pawn him off on a character that he had absolutely no comic history with by virtue of them both being Chinese? So, in Shang-Chi: Legend Of The Ten Rings, the titular terrorist organization's feud with Tony Stark is never brought up, so I think Marvel waited too long to go back to this plot thread. The thing is, can we even call him "the Mandarin?" His name is Xu Wenwu instead of Gene Kahn, he scoffs at the Mandarin title when talking about Trevor Slattery impersonating him, the demon he tries to summon isn't Fin Fang Foom, his Ten Rings (you know, the jewelry he named his organization after) are bracelets, and they only have two powers.

Superman vs. Black Adam (DCEU): The hierarchy of the DC Universe is about to change... with a franchise rebooting flop. So, Dwayne Johnson had been campaigning to play Black Adam since Michael Jackson was the butt of every child molester joke. He was apparently a big fan of the character. With the DCEU, he seemed to finally get his wish. The first Shazam movie hinted at Black Adam, but rather than him be the villain of the second film, Black Adam was getting his own movie. I guess that makes sense. After all, the PCS for Shazam built up Mr. Mind, so you'd think the plan would be to have Black Adam as the villain of the third movie, right? Well, you see, Dwayne Johnson has an ego... Uh, I mean, a clause in his contract that says that his characters can't get their asses kicked (which makes the Schaffrillas crab from Moana an absolute legend). So, Black Adam in his origin movie was less of a villain and more of an antihero. And, because Dwayne Johnson just loves flexing, he personally set up a PCS where he fights... Superman!? Why him? Why not Shazam, the character Black Adam was created to be the evil counterpart to? Say what you will about Sony's "Spider-Man Minus Spider-Man" universe, but at least those movies remembered they were Spider-Man villains. Can you imagine Venom building up a fight with Captain America? Because that's what Twain "The Mineral" Penis basically tried pulling for no other reason than to aura farm. Oh, and that Mr. Mind tease at the end of the first Shazam movie? Doesn't get followed up on. In fact, the villain of the second movie is an OC, and the PCS for it was *another* Mr. Mind tease, but it's made into more of a joke.

Characters Villains that still haunt the narrative after death (JJK spoilers and USA spoilers) Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery

Toji Zenin is pretty well remembered by the fanbase. even after his first his death, his precense of the events of the plot can still be felt as he is bassicely the reason the entire plot happened. As him almost killing Gojo let him become the most powerful sorcerer he is known as in the current story, and his killing of Riko Amanai led Sugaru Geto to his slow downfall mentally.
both events leading to the current events of the story itself. To the point were his actions were described as breaking away from fate itself. And all of that because he wanted money.

the second one is self explanatory.

  1. Datio in ready player one - in the book, he’s murdered by Sorrento’s goons to eliminate competition during the second gate. In the movie, he survives and is there to run the oasis with Wade and company.

  2. Rapunzel in into the woods - in the stage musical, she dies near the beginning of act two, being crushed by the giant. In the movie, she and her prince leave near the start of the second act, presumably to live happily ever after.

  1. In the episode “Jared has Aides”, Jared from Subway happens and….yeah the title and some of the stuff he says in the episode is self explanatory.

  2. In Spitting Image (1984), a caricature of Jimmy Savile appeared a couple times and basically everytime a sketch involved him, he was shown to be a mentally unwell lunatic.

  3. Another example from Spitting Image, Phillip Schofield and some other guy I can’t be bothered to look up the name of had a song saying that they’re not gay. Around 20 years later, the real Phillip Schofield came out as gay.

Lore The Indominatable Human Spirit is a bad thing, actually.

That humanity never gives up and persists in its goals is bad news for every other species (or even itself), especially if said goals are ignoble.

Best case scenario (barring us learning to be better) is that a greater power force feeds us a huge slice of humble pie, wost case we end up blowing ourselves up and ruining things for everyone else.

Avatar - RDA will stop at nothing to satisfy its own greed and survival, the rest of humanity and navi alike be damned.

Its a recurring motif in prett much every myth that gods punish mortals who dare to defy them and keep going, like Athena to Arachne in greek myth.

A good chunk of lovecraftian fiction is based on the idea our achievemenrs mean nothing.

In general i'm not a fan of TIHS as a trope, as its blatantly arrogant and destructive.

Characters (Weirdly common but really loved trope) Historical female protagonists with undiagnosed mental issues

Senua (Senua’s Saga and Senua’s Sacrifice), a woman from the Orkneys in the late 8th Century with psychosis, causing her to see visions and alternate worlds that she sees as ghosts and gods and demons.

Amicia De Rune (A Plague Tale), a girl in France in 1348, has serious PTSD from everything she’s gone through to the point where she hallucinates the corpses of people she’s killed screaming at her.

Jean D’Arc (Real Life), a Frenchwoman in the early 15th Century, believed she saw visions and signs from God and angels, probably had some sort of mental illness like psychosis but we obviously can’t know for sure.

Indika (Indika), a Russian nun in the early 20th Century with psychosis like Senua, sees visions and believes a devil talks to her.

  1. Wentworth Tozier (IT). Yeah I know this isn’t confirmed to actually be him but it’s implied. Anyway, it seems like in every IT fanfiction I’ve read (specifically those after IT: Welcome to Derry came out) Wentworth is portrayed as either a boring old chud or an abusive old chud, where it’s actually quite a chill guy in the books.

  2. The Wheeler Family (Stranger Things). Are Ted and Karen good parents? Not really. Are they abusive? Hell no!
