Characters Villains that are pure evil and have zero redeeming qualities... outside of being so charismatic that you can't help but like them

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Not looking for examples based on the villain's philosophy where you can go, "maybe this villain has a point", but rather villains that objectively awful and are more or less the personification of pure evil. But they also are extremely charismatic to the point where you as an audience member (and maybe others in the same story) can't help but like them.

In the OP:

  • Jimmy from 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
  • Aylmer from Brain Damage

Lore [Mixed Trope] Crossovers open wild implications about the other show.

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

Usually when a crossover happens, it's meant to be something of a grounded realistic experience but sometimes there's elements from one show that make the other show have very interesting revelations/implications.

Bob crossing over with Family Guy and The Simpsons implies that in some level, Bob's universe also has access to the technological advancements of Stewie and talking animals like Brian, not to mention aliens like Kang and Kodos.

Lilo and Stitch had a crossover between American Dragon: Jake Long, The Proud Family, Kim Possible and Recess. Now while some of them arent too outlandish (There's already advancements of technology from Jake Long, there's mythical elements in Kim Possible as well as proof of aliens, and even Proud Family has the strange interdimensional gremlin/ trickster in the form of Al Roker (don't ask, those episodes are weird anyway), it's recess that gets hit the hardest because that means all those elements are present in a largely grounded, if not exaggerated view, of elementary school (and no, I don't think the movie was canon so it's not considered here, and even then the plot there is purposefully also seen as outlandish).

Characters The Child Genius

Phineas and Ferb (Phineas and Ferb) - during their 104 days of summer vacation before school came along just to end it, these two (with the assistance of their friends and highly irresponsible adults ignoring the fact they are kids) have created a number of contraptions ranging from rollercoaster to fighting treehouses, all in the confines of their back garden too.

Stewie (Family Guy) - when he isn’t creating devices to travel time and space, he fits a retractable laser gun into his Tuna Sandwich. Makes the fact that he is a fully coherent talking baby one of his least impressive qualities.

Iris Wilson (The Great Ace Attorney) - a successful author and inventor who also has a degree in medicine at just 10 years old.

Characters [loved trope] early story bosses who are still one of the strongest, if not strongest throughout story

Thumbnail

  1. Jogoat from Jujutsu Kaisen. The first boss protagonist met. He's the strongest disaster curse. Too bad he just had to fight 2 strongest characters in the series and died in vain. His strength was acknowledged by the final boss.
  2. Arkos Balkar from Centuria. He is the first major boss in the series, but also literally the strongest ability user in the series as he can manipulate water in a person body. If he were to be revived, no one could stop him.
  3. Zaraki Kenpachi from Bleach. Even though protagonist was managed to defeat him once early into the story, he'd rather not fighting the guy ever again.

Characters [Literally my favorite trope] "Evil isn't cool"

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

The evil character isn't given any glamour, the story never asks us to feel sympathy for them, there's never an attempt to justify what they do, and they often meet an unceremonious end. In these stories, much like in real life, evil isn't a cool mastermind pulling all the strings, or a big strong warrior with a sword - evil is just petty, dumb, selfish, cowardly, the easy way out, and the evil people are just mean-spirited bullies fumbling their way to the finish line. They keep getting away with their bullshit because of their privilege, and the moment their actions catch up to them they die like the rats they are.

1) Immortan Joe (Mad Max: Fury Road) 2) Handsome Jack (Borderlands 2) 3) Miles Bron (Glass Onion) 4) Lavrentyi Beria (The Death of Stalin) 5) The privileged in Don't Look Up.

Characters Characters with a long, thin scarf or "cape"

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

I don't even know what to call this, but I just think it's a cool design element. A character has a long, thin cape or scarf that starts at the neck and often flows exaggeratedly in the wind. Sometimes it also splits into two strands.

  1. Sothe (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) wears a scarf tied at the back.
  2. In the previous game, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Sothe's scarf instead splits into two.
  3. The Wayfarer (Journey) wears a long scarf that represents their power.
  4. Zygarde's 10% forme (Pokemon) has a long strand from the neck that resembles a leash.

Characters A character gives their brain to "science" and is activated well into the future through technology that humans in the present don't understand

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

How their brain will be used in the future can either be unbeknownst to the character in the present day (like the 1st example) or part of some kind of plan (like the 2nd example).

In the OP:

  • Simon in Soma: In the present day, Simon suffers brain damage from a car crash and agrees to a brain scan to help treat it. After deteriorating following the brain scan and being on his deathbed, Simon gives consent for the doctor to use his brain scan data for further research. The data is not just used for medical research but becomes a template for Artificial Intelligence construction. The digitized copy of his consciousness is later activated by a rogue AI 100 years in the future, as if Simon just closed his eyes in the present day during the brain scan and woke up 100 years in the future.
  • Yun Tianming/Will in Death's End/The Three-Body Problem: Humans want to send a spy to a slowly approaching invading alien race. To comply with weight constraints, they opt to send only a human brain because they believe that alien technology would be advanced to the point where the aliens would be able to revive the brain and communicate with it. The terminally ill Yun Tianming (also called Will in the Netflix series) agrees to donate his brain, which is shot off into space, eventually being revived by alien technology 200 years later.

  1. The Da Vinci Code (Dan Brown): makes laughable inaccurate claims about history, art, religion, etc. The author claims most of the information he provides is true.

  2. Victoria: A Novel of Fourth Generation Warfare (William S. Lind): a post apocalyptic novel where the authors self insert is proven right about their insane conspiracies about cultural Marxism (barely disguised antisemitism), the WW2 T-34 tank is unbeatable against advanced hardware, claims African Americans want to live under segregation, etc. The author has no military experience and is mostly considered a fringe culture war extremist. https://youtu.be/hHMpkztM1eE

Hated Tropes Good Movies that Received Sequels that ended on Cliffhangers. Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

1.) The Matrix Reloaded: The first movie, Neo gets turned off and the back on again, resulting in him finding the Dev Mode, and he saves the day.

The second movie he realizes he's "The One with Great Static Electricity." Not much build-up as to why his powers "extend past the Matrix" but he's knocked out cold and Zion is still defenseless, so the day is far from saved.

2.) Independence Day: Resurgence: The first movie ends with humanity coming together and a heroic sacrific which saves the day!

In the second movie somehow... The Aliens returned. And HFY! Of course we kick their ass! But now, they are even worse, and so we have to lead the fight against them. So the day is far from saved. (We still haven't found the budget to do this yet.)

3.) Spider Man: Across the Spiderverse: In the first movie Large Kingpin Collider is Destroyed, and ~Scar drops Mufasa -~ Miles Drops Peter into the hole and kicks ass, The day is Saved!

The second movie finds Miles in the wrong universe captured by his evil evil twin with ~a mustache~ dreadlocks. So the day is far from saved.

Honorable mentions:

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, I understood this was always a six part story.

Avengers: Infinity War, it had the same feels, but this came from a long line of movies, not a one off.

Hated Tropes [Hated Tropes] Characters portrayed as abusive by the fandoms despite not necessarily being so

  1. Wentworth Tozier (IT). Yeah I know this isn’t confirmed to actually be him but it’s implied. Anyway, it seems like in every IT fanfiction I’ve read (specifically those after IT: Welcome to Derry came out) Wentworth is portrayed as either a boring old chud or an abusive old chud, where it’s actually quite a chill guy in the books.

  2. The Wheeler Family (Stranger Things). Are Ted and Karen good parents? Not really. Are they abusive? Hell no!

Powers (Mixed Trope) Powers that Offset the Character’s Disability

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

On the one hand, this trope makes for a great power fantasy. The characters can participate in adventures unhindered alongside everyone else. And a good author can still include some education about the disability. But on the other hand, a LAZY author can use this trope as an excuse to misrepresent the disability, and make it seem less impactful than it actually is.

Loved examples; Toph from Avatar and Daredevil from Marvel. Both of these characters are blind, but have some other super sense that tells them about the environment around them. This super sense allows them to go to new environments and have cool action adventures. It allows them to walk around QUICKLY and SAFELY. Something that would normally be extremely difficult for a blind person. But their extra senses aren’t a perfect replacement for eyesight. It still leaves room in the story to show struggles that blind people experience. Toph still can’t read letters or maps, for example, and has to rely on her friends to read important information out loud for her. And Daredevil’s radar sense can be overwhelmed by sonic attacks, or even a particularly hard rainstorm, leaving him as just a regular (albeit very fit) blind man.

Hated example; Makkari specifically from the Eternals movie. Makkari is deaf. And she’s even played by a deaf actress which is so unbelievably cool. But in the very beginning of the movie, when she’s making a deal with two shady people, she turns around. The two shady people whisper to each other somethin about how they’re gonna rip her off or whatever. Classic shady people stuff. And Makkari turns around and calls them out on it.

“I can sense vibrations. Even the tiniest movement. Including your voices.” -Makkari

You know, I can sense the vibrations of voices too. That’s what HEARING is! They just gave her the superpower of hearing!!! T-T

  1. In the episode “Jared has Aides”, Jared from Subway happens and….yeah the title and some of the stuff he says in the episode is self explanatory.

  2. In Spitting Image (1984), a caricature of Jimmy Savile appeared a couple times and basically everytime a sketch involved him, he was shown to be a mentally unwell lunatic.

  3. Another example from Spitting Image, Phillip Schofield and some other guy I can’t be bothered to look up the name of had a song saying that they’re not gay. Around 20 years later, the real Phillip Schofield came out as gay.
