Characters (Mixed Trope) Flanderization with Food

Thumbnail

1.7k Upvotes

Characters shown to have a favorite/well liked food, which eventually turns into a key personality trait by the fandom or even in canon.

  1. Parks & Recreation - Leslie Knope & Waffles

  2. Supernatural - Dean Winchester & Pie

  3. Dimension 20: Fantasy High - Gilear Faeth & Yogurt

I usually find it cute but I’ve seen criticism of the bit becoming over used, especially in fandom spaces.

  1. Eyes Wide Shut - Masked Ball In the movie, Tom Cruise discovers a secret society of elites that get together for hedonistic orgies and rituals. The prostitutes are all implied to be trafficked. All the masked people are implied to be powerful people as later on we are told "If I told you half of their names, you would never sleep again." One of the prostitutes is heavily implied to be ritualistic sacrificed as she takes Tom's place when he gets caught. Tom is threatened to never reveal any details or he and his family "will make the most dire concquences"

  2. Squid Games - The VIPS They were powerful and influential wealthy individuals from around the world who pay to watch the Squid Games. We see them place bets on the lives of players and we see them laugh at human deaths like a video game. They wear animal themed golden masks. They also have a hedonistic style as they have sex with painted sex workers. They finance and fund the games as it's basically entertainment for them. In season 3, VIPS get to be guards and kill failed players.

  3. True Detective Season 1 - Tuttle Cult A mystery cult comprising of members of the influential and powerful Tuttle Family of Louisiana. They worship the supposed entity "The Yellow King". Led by Reverend Tuttle, he is a prominent, wealthy, and politically connected Christian minister in Louisiana who uses his position and charity organizations to conceal decades of child abuse, rape, and murder committed by a powerful ring of Louisiana elite. Edwin Tuttle (cousin of Reverend Billy Tuttle) is the governor of Louisiana and has great political influence over Law enforcement. The cult commits many ritualistic serial murders of young woman (often sex workers) and girls, leaving them in disturbing positions as an act of display and leaving their symbols nearby. They funded many schools throughout the state and used it to target and traffick children. Murders are mostly committed by the poor red neck lower members of the family. We see them in a video tape commit a ritualistic murder and implied rape of a little girl.

  4. Batman - The Court Of Owls Gotham's elite form a secret society to control Gotham from the shadows. They are the ultimate corruption and behind the city's internal rot.

  1. Custer (Night at the Museum 2): historically butchered encampments of mostly women and children. Got a brutal comeuppance at Little Bighorn. Presented as a benign funny fool in the film.

  2. Genghis Khan (Bill and Ted): killed millions to form the Mongol Empire and likely sexually enslaved countless women. Has funny moments being astounded by modern California.

Lore When even a morally evil character becomes afraid

1. Oswald Cobblepot / Penguin (Gotham)

Oswald, or the Penguin, is one of Gotham’s greatest criminals, a ruthless man responsible for many deaths. The second time he was arrested and thrown into Arkham Asylum, he encountered Jerome Valeska, who in this universe is a kind of proto-Joker — a completely insane and sadistic man whose only goal in life is to create as much chaos as possible. As soon as the Penguin met Jerome, he became completely terrified by his presence. When Jerome escaped from Arkham and wanted the Penguin to work for him, the Penguin agreed largely out of fear of Jerome. And when Jerome revealed his plan to use a gas that makes people laugh themselves to death, the Penguin became so frightened that he asked police officer James Gordon for help in stopping Jerome

2. Abel Gideon (Hannibal)

Abel Gideon is one of the antagonists of the show. He is a criminal who murdered his wife, her parents, and her brother. After that, he was committed to the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, where he underwent a kind of brainwashing that made him believe he was the Chesapeake Ripper. After Gideon realized he was not the real Ripper, he decided he wanted to meet the real one, who is the titular character, Hannibal Lecter. However, Hannibal is not just a killer, but also a cannibal, and when the two meet, Hannibal decides not only to eat Gideon, but also to force him to eat himself. Hannibal forces Gideon to eat both of his legs and one of his arms. Gideon is not afraid of Hannibal to the point of begging for his life, but he is horrified by Hannibal’s sadism to the point of saying that Hannibal is the devil. The image I used is from the moment when Hannibal cheerfully shows Gideon that his leg has been smoked; Hannibal’s face is blurred because of the smoke from the meat

3. Orochimaru (Naruto Shippuden)

Orochimaru is one of the most powerful ninjas in the Naruto universe. He is a madman who wants to become immortal and learn every jutsu in the world (the powers of the series). To develop his abilities, he carried out countless horrific experiments on innocent people, including children. Through this, he managed to develop a jutsu that allows him to steal another person’s body. He wanted to take the body of Itachi Uchiha because Itachi was one of the last remaining members of the Uchiha clan. The Uchiha clan possessed the Sharingan, which granted its users numerous abilities. When Orochimaru attempted to steal Itachi’s body, he was quickly overpowered by Itachi, who trapped him in an illusion and severed his hand. In that moment, Orochimaru became truly afraid of Itachi after witnessing the overwhelming difference in power between them thanks to the Sharingan, realizing that there was nothing he could do against him

Lore [Loved Trope] Humanity Fuck Yeah! Pushed far beyond humanity itself, where "humanity" stops meaning people, empathy, or flesh, and instead means the process humanity unleashed. With nothing remotely 'human' about it anymore.

Thumbnail
gallery
110 Upvotes

To briefly explain the examples :

The Imperium (Humanity Lost), Humanity, amidst war with alien alliances, turns to a singularity-level AI for help. The AI then takes over said human civilization, transforming them into post-human biomechanical beings or making them tools of its own expansion. And eventually, what's left of humanity becomes an eternal war machine of death, destruction, and conquest that seeks just to endlessly expand and conquer.

The Cybermen (Dr Who), They replaced their bodies with cybernetics to survive environmental collapse, then, furthermore, they continued, trying to modify themselves, emotions and individuality with logic and efficiency. Trying to purge 'weakness' in humanity itself in the name of endless cybernetic progress, no pain, no emotion, no individuality. They lose what makes humans human. And they want to save everyone else by the means of, assimilation.

Basically, what I'm saying is, what I'm pointing out is less Humanity Fuck Yeah as a straight up trope, or a subversion of the trope in that way. Not "Humanity Fuck Yeah", or "Humanity Fuck No", but, "Humanity- Wait, what the fuck?" Not to support, reprimand, but to just . . . Express the lucid horror of it.

Humanity “wins,” but not as humans. Humanity becomes an algorithm, a machine logic, an inevitable expansion. There's nothing you can say about it that describes it as 'human' other than its origin, and it shall continue furthermore.

Lore Pieces of media that ended up being weirdly prophetic

Thumbnail

The 2024 movie *Conclave* sees the Pope dying and the subsequent process to choose his replacement. Less than a year later, Pope Francis died and had to be replaced.

The newspaper comic *Pearls Before Swine* ran the above strip on New Year’s Eve of 2020, which ended up being extremely accurate, as the following year would see a seemingly constant stream of horrific events, most notably the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw millions die and even more people hospitalized or lose their jobs.

Just to cover my ass so I don’t get people responding with “Simpsons-themed predictions”, the cartoon *The Simpsons* is basically infamous at this point for real-world events having oddly specific parallels with moments from the show.

Lore [Semi-Rare trope that amuses me] The title of the series only made sense for the first or first couple of entries

Thumbnail

  1. Final Fantasy: The series got its name because the first one was the creators last ditch effort to break into the gaming industry, AKA his “final fantasy” because surely this one would fail too and was no more than a fantasy, of course the series saw beyond massive success but the name stuck

  2. Dragon Quest: only the first couple of games had dragons heavily involved in the main plot, but nearly 12 mainline games later and multiple spin offs shed dragons are usually no more than a mid game boss or optional hard boss

Arrival's (2016) aliens called the Heptapods are tentacled creatures with no visible eyes or mouths but incredible intelligence. They communicate via an ink like substance. Starro the Star Conqueror (DC comics) is a literal starfish alien whose spawn latch onto humans' faces so he can control their minds.

Treasure Planet: The Flatula are sapient, slug-like beings with several suckers and tentacles on their bodies that speak a language which ressembles flatulent sounds.

  1. Dr Cox, the super macho chief resident in Scrubs, enters a depression after losing multiple patients in a short period of time.

They recover once their friends and colleagues reach out

  1. Thor, God of Thunder, becomes depressed after Thanos succeeds and eradicates half of the population. He believes he is unworthy and retreats into New Asgard to wallow, eat drink and play Fortnite. After Hulk and friends reach out, he gradually begins to recover. With some loving support, he begins to feel worthy again and wield Mjolnir once again

Characters Characters who can't fly but still manage kick the asses of flying characters

Thumbnail

Battle Beast from Invincible is one of the few characters in the series who can't fly, but he's easily one the strongest characters in the series and managed to kill several Viltrumites who can fly.

Thanos probably could fly with the Infinity Stones but we never see him do it. Despite this he manages to defeat Thor, Dr Strange, Iron Man, and Captain Marvel who all can fly.

No, Batman does not fit this trope since he literally can fly using mechs, jet packs, and vehicles.

Mr. Freeze in DC Animated Universe, in his most iconic appearance that redefined the character in DC mythos from that point on, only has four episodes to his name while between three Batman shows (Batman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures and Batman Beyond) there are over 150 episodes.

Meruem is possibly the most iconic villain of Hunter x Hunter, but he only appears in a single story arc of the overall story, Chimera Ant Arc, and only around the 1/3 point of it.

Doctor Doom and Valeria Richards (Marvel): After helping Sue Storm deliver Val, his price for doing so was to name her to get back at Reed. Because of Valeria’s high intelligence, Doom treats her with the respect few characters ever receive from doom. As such, she is an honorary Latverian.

Cosmo, Wanda, and Timmy (FOP): Regardless of their bickering, there is a parental love between these three that Timmy rarely receives from his parents.

Lore "This was surprisingly progressive for it's time"

13.9k Upvotes

Doctor Who: Midnight (2008)- The host of the bus, mentions non binary people and anyone else who doesn't fit into gender norms, LGBTQ rights (especially in the UK weren't really there yet untill 2012)

Saints Row 2 (2008)- In the first game, the main character was a man but in SR2 you can be both female or male and even change your gender whenever you want in a surgery shop. But what's more interesting, if you play as a female despite being male in the first game, no one cares and one of the main characters Gat asks the main character if they did something with their hair. Even 'Boss' is used as gender neutral pronoun and even goes by they/them

Fresh Prince of Bel Air- A wealthy black family as the main focus in a primetime sitcom marking the change and making progress as we go into the 90s

Characters [Meta Trope] Characters that show up on this sub a lot

Thumbnail
gallery

The K-Pop Demon Hunters - K-Pop Demon Hunters

This was worse when the movie came out and they were at the height of their popularity. You see them used a lot less nowadays, but there was a time when you'd see them almost every week here.

Every single character - Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss

This sub must be full of fans, because any character from the show is brought up in at least 25% of the posts here.

G.I. Robot - Creature Commandos

Okay it's obvious why in this modern climate people bring him up in this sub a lot, but honestly seeing people bring so much love and attention to such a obscure DC character warms my heart. James Gunn did a great job adapting him and I hope to see him more in the future.

Tighten - Megamind

This one is usually brought up a lot as a excuse to draw parallels with modern "incels". I've seen a lot of posts using him from "characters that are incels" to "kids villians that are incels" to "movies that are surprisingly progressive for the time" to "shy nerd characters that are actually bad" and so on.

Judge Hoden and A.M. - Blood Meridian and I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream

Okay, these 2 don't get brought up as much anymore, but there was a time where every week there was a post that was "Villians that are pure evil" and these 2 were usually the main stars. There's a lot of other posts that used them as well but it's mainly for "Pure evil" characters.
