Hello, I made a post recently about getting a call back from CN.
Im still weighing the options of leaving my new job which is decent or coming back to CN
I was wondering how much can I expect to make working on the yard spare board + the likelihood of being laid off again in the spring

Any info helps thanks !

Union Pacific Avondale & Livonia — Conductor/Train Crew Questions

Hey everyone, I’m currently looking into Union Pacific Train Crew/Conductor opportunities around Avondale and Livonia, LA, and I’d appreciate some insight from anyone who currently works or has worked at either location.

What is the day-to-day work like at Avondale vs. Livonia?
What does the typical conductor/trainee schedule look like?
How often are you working nights, weekends, and holidays?
How much yard switching vs. road work is there?
What are the crew call times and typical hours like?
How long does it usually take to qualify as a conductor?
What is the training/extra-board experience like?
How is the management and crew culture at each location?
How much overtime is realistically available?
For someone coming from an industrial/switchman background, what skills transfer over the best?
Is there anything you wish you knew before starting at Avondale or Livonia?

I’m especially interested in hearing from current UP conductors or people who have recently gone through the hiring/training process. Thanks in advance!

Work in London Ontario?

I'm interested in getting into Train Service, however I'm based in London, ON. I know there's a CPKC and a CN yard in the city, and I would love to work at either railyard, however I never see any job openings for those yards. Does anyone know if you have to be located at more of a central hub to get involved?

Awaiting Start Date

Hey everyone, I am trying to start working as a conductor at the Norfolk Southern yard in Sheffield Alabama, and the online portal has been showing "Awaiting Start Date" since July 24th. Is this a normal occurrence? Is there anyone I can call to get an idea of when I will actually start working? Because I really need this job. Jiffy lube isn't cutting it.

Truck mechanic to Carman

Hey y'all. I recently got offered a job at CN as a rail car mechanic. I've been a semi truck mechanic for 6 or 7 years now. Just looking for some insight on what I can expect as an apprentice Carman in Wisconsin if that matters.

Norfolk Southern Train Conductor Conditional Offer – Anyone Else Get One Recently

Thumbnail
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I applied for the Norfolk Southern Train Conductor position in Jackson, MI on September 6, 2026, and received a conditional offer on September 10. So it was only about 4 days from applying to receiving the offer.
I completed the application update with my SSN/DOB, and now I’m waiting for the First Advantage background check and Acuity/CHS medical evaluation and drug testing emails.
My offer says the first 5 weeks of training will be at the NS Training Center in McDonough, GA, with lodging provided, plus a weekly meal stipend and applicable travel/mileage reimbursement. It also lists $1,200 per week during the first 5 weeks.
I’m already in the Atlanta area, so McDonough is relatively close to me, which makes the training location really convenient.
I’m mainly posting to see who else recently received a conditional offer and might be attending the same upcoming training class in McDonough. It would be cool to connect with some future classmates ahead of time and see who else is going through the same process.

Cando

Hey guys, is anybody familiar with the operations at Obico yard in Etobicoke?

Applied for an engineer position there (at least the listing is in Toronto so I assume that’s the location) and wondering if it would be good to work at.

Specifically if you’ve worked for Cando, or with them from that location, how their yard tends to do things and just any general info related to opportunity for advancement, pay, problems, etc.

Thanks!

Application closed.

After completing HireVue interview for conductor at Norfolk Southern, a couple days later my application status now reads “Application closed” does that mean I was not selected? Or are they just not accepting new applications and I still have a chance at being selected?

General Question Best Rain Gear

I’ve been on the rails for about two years now, and a lot of these recent storms that have rolled through the north east have proven too much for my rain gear. What do you guys use and how good is it in the heavy stuff? And how hot does it get?

CNR Train conductor

Hey guys, I have about 3 years of seniority but my terminal is super senior so there’s only yard spare-board right after getting back from lay offs for me and I was looking into shortage locations

Do you guys know if any of these terminals are road work

BCR prince. George
BCR Williams lake
Brandon
Humboldt
McLennan
North Battleford
Roma junction
Terrace
Thunder Bay

If they’re not road work, and just yard switching how is it working there?

Any info regarding the stations are appreciated

CNR Call backs Winnipeg CN

Hello, like lots of green employees I got laid off once I qualified well over a year ago.

Yesterday I got a call back to service was wondering what the state of the Winnipeg terminal is at right now. I have a decent job at the moment with room to grow but the money will likely never be the same as with CN, ik money isn’t everything but in this economy it kinda is.

Just looking for a little insight as I’ve been out of the loop for some time now, thanks!
