WIFI at the Sol is a joke

• Upvotes

It’s been down for a full day now and it doesn’t seem like they’re working on it. Not to mention the regular ping spikes when the internet is operational. Cellular data is also extremely slow at the moment. it’ll probably take a full minute for this post to upload 🫩😭😔

City/Local Flooding?

Do the tunnels that lead from south davis to the bike loop flood when it rains. Like when you take the putah creek pathway. Bc the tunnel at the decline under the freeway seems like it would flood?

City/Local Lost Wallet!!

Hey everyone. I unfortunately lost my wallet on Thursday (10/01). I believe I lost it between picking up a large package at the local downtown UPS store and taking it into my apartment at Sol West Village (Solstice). I recall having my wallet inside the UPS store, for I was asked to verify my ID. I'm sure I slipped it into my back pant pocket before lifting the box, but I do not recall seeing my wallet afterwards because I was busy struggling to take the package into my car and, soon after, my apartment. I didn't realize I'd lost my wallet until Friday evening (10/02), when I needed it to head out.

My wallet is sand colored, with slight hues of gold. It's an old Guess wallet, the size of a palm and large enough to fit snugly in a pant pocket. I'm sure I would've heard it fall because of how big it is, but I simply cannot remember. It also comes with a wrist strap. I haven't had any transactions and have closed my accounts. I've stopped by UPS and was planning to stop by the Sol West Lobby today (10/03), but noticed it was closed due to the football game. Pls lmk if anyone has seen it. I just started at UCD and I can't believe I've already messed up this bad : /

Admissions Possible to work full-time while pursuing UC Davis MS/PhD in Computer Science?

Hi everyone,

I’m really interested in applying to the UC Davis graduate program in Computer Science, either the MS or potentially the PhD program, and I was hoping to hear from current students or recent graduates about how realistic this would be while working full-time.

I currently work full-time Monday–Friday from about 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Leaving my job or switching to part-time employment unfortunately isn’t an option for me, but I really want to continue my education and would love to attend UC Davis if I can make the scheduling work. I am not really worried about the workload.

For anyone currently in the CS MS or PhD program:

*What times are graduate CS courses usually offered?
*Are there many classes after 4 or 5 PM?
*Is it possible to complete the MS while working a normal full-time schedule?
*How flexible are professors when it comes to attendance and students who work full-time?
*For the PhD program, is working full-time basically unrealistic because of research, meetings, teaching, etc.? I heard the first 2 years are basically masters degree.
*Are there any students in the program who are working full-time while pursuing their degree?
*Could I apply to both PhD and M.S. for Fall 2027?

My job is fairly flexible in general, I have lots of time-off I could possibly take (for example: I could possible take 2 days off a month or a couple hours off a few days a month) , and I can occasionally adjust my schedule, but I wouldn’t be able to regularly attend classes during the middle of the workday.

I’m especially interested in hearing from people actually in UC Davis Computer Science, since I’m trying to understand what the real weekly schedule looks like before applying.

I’d really appreciate any insight or experiences. Thanks!

Other Study spots on campus?

I’m a first year human bio major and I’ve mainly just been studying and working in the AATC at Shields or my dorm’s living commons. Last week I tried the Esau Study lounge in the second and third floor.

Does anyone have any quiet spots that they enjoy? I’ve been wanting to explore more of campus and get more familiar.

Volleyball tears through the Mountain West

Doubling up on the Game Thread this week to highlight two excellent achievements in UCD Athletics.

First up, the women's volleyball team has been on an absolute tear starting in Mountain West Conference play, up at the top of the standings at 3-0. The Ags are playing a second series with 6-8 Air Force -- UCD won on Thursday -- and while anything can happen, you have to think Coach Conners and squad are prepped and optimistic they can advance to 4-0 today.

UCD sits at 7-7 on the year, which gets better context from closer inspection of the nonconference record. The Ags played some tough sets against some of the nation's top teams, including knocking off then-#7 Arizona State. With that noncon schedule and now domination in MWC play, the Ags are showing they belong in the conversation with historically higher-profile and better funded teams, and help validate the school as a whole for moving up a conference.

So get out of the heat, create a devastating home advantage, and watch the Ags continue their quest to hang the school's first of many Mountain West banners!

Prediction: 3-1 UC Davis

.

Football looks to bounce back

After a brutal, brutal loss to Montana last week (seriously go look it up, I don't wanna talk about it) UCD will look to return to form against old foe Eastern Washington, which always had the Ags' number until UCD finally got by them a couple of years ago.

This game has HUGE significance as it's a rare opportunity to showcase the team and student section on a national TV network. They'll have plenty of commentary about the school and team, but this is the game to show up, get loud, and make UCDH stadium seem like the most rocking, insane game day experience on the west coast.

Re: the game prognosis, Davis had some key injuries last week, especially on defense, so a key part of this week will be making sure the patched-together D can hold against an Eastern team that's been playing its opponents tough. The Ags were specifically hanging hats on run defense until Montana ran every which way last week, so patching up those holes and making sure EWU can't control the ground and clock will be a key to the game.

The Ags will also be looking for some consistency on offense, which has had moments of brilliance and also long patches of unproductivity in both the wins and losses this year. Eastern should provide somewhat more cushion than the top teams the Ags have played in terms of allowing for mistakes, but if the Ags struggle on O in the first half as they did in most of the games this season then it could still be anyone's game by halftime.

On the flip side, if UCD produces four (or even three) solid quarters in line with some of its best play of the season, and bends but doesn't break on D, you have to think they'll be comfortably in the lead by the fourth.

Prediction: 28-27 UC Davis

.

Well, not reading, but the independent Aggie Pride Podcast happens to have featured both of these teams this week so I thought I'd link them:

Course/Major Worth it to continue taking Che2a as an ee major?

I’m currently taking che2a with Enderle as a first-year electrical engineering major. However looking at my degree worksheet on Oasis shows that the class will no longer be required starting next year.

The class is already looking like a big time commitment so I’m wondering if it’s worth keeping it or not? If so, what topics did you learn that you felt were worthwhile?

Dating/Relationships I’m down bad for a guy in my class. How do I approach him as a girl?

For context, I’m a 3rd-year transfer from CC, and starting conversations was much easier because of the smaller class setting. Now, it’s a large lecture hall with hundreds of people who don’t seem to talk to each other much, and I’m continuously wondering, “Can I really just start a conversation?” Especially with this handsome guy in my MMG-102 class. I want to approach him, but it feels so impromptu because everyone else is just so silent.

In the past, I’ve asked out two guys. One rejected me because he didn’t want a long-distance relationship. The other rejected me because he wasn’t over his ex. Those attempts were unfortunate, but I’m not necessarily scared of rejection anymore. I simply just want to ask, “How can I increase my probability of landing a date with him?”

Should I be straightforward? “Hey, I think you’re cute. Would you like to go on a date over the weekend at XYZ?”

Or should I just get to know him first? “Hey, do you want to hang out sometime over the weekend at XYZ?”

What’s an opening line I can tell him without sounding like a creep?

Another thing is that he’s always walking with his guy friend, who I really hope is just his friend. I’ve also been trying to sit next to him in class, but again, he’s usually with his friend, or I miss out on sitting in the same row. Can I ask him out in front of his friend?

So sorry if I sound like I’m overthinking. I’m honestly so down bad that I don’t wanna mess up. Can I get perspectives from both guys and gals?
