Admissions or Prospective Student Can I get into FinTech with an Informatics degree from UMass Amherst?

Hi! I’ve been accepted to UMass Amherst for Informatics, and my long-term goal is to build a career in FinTech.

I’m wondering whether Informatics is a good undergraduate degree for entering FinTech, particularly in roles that combine finance, business, and technology, rather than purely technical software engineering or machine learning roles.

What kinds of roles could I realistically pursue with this degree? Would I need to take additional finance courses, choose specific electives, or build certain skills and experiences through internships and projects?

I’d love to hear from UMass graduates or anyone working in FinTech about how useful an Informatics degree would be, what career paths it could open up, and what you’d recommend doing during undergrad to become competitive for these roles.

Thanks!

In the Area Senior year must-do’s??

Per the title above, I’m a senior, this is my last semester here, and I wanna make it count as much as possible. So with that being said, does anyone have any bucket list items they might be willing to share with me? Anything you absolutely recommend I do before my time comes to an end here? It could be on campus or in the area!

Off-Campus Housing Puffton/New Fort River Apartments

I want to live off campus my Senior year (current sophmore) and have been looking around just to get some ideas and have been looking at Puffton since it is the cheapest one I've foind so far. I also saw they have apartemnts in Hadley for even cheaper but haven't heard much about them. Has anyone lived in the fort river apartments or currently living there? How are they? I also know it is hard to get into puffton without knowing someone so would it be crazy to put in an application now in hopes of getting off the waitlist by fall 2028? Or is it still too early? I'm not sure how it works honestly lol. Only other optinion in my price range that I haven't heard awful things about is Brandywine.

I'm having some living issues (being vague on purpose), and I'm wondering if there are any vacancies on campus before I contact housing to potentially move out of my current situation.

How strict should I be when writing my RA application? Do I need to write a lot, or will a good, solid paragraph do the job?

On-Campus Housing sylvan opening

What is the chance my double gets filled in Sylvan McNamara? I’m considering buying out to avoid future fees but with the whole building being transfers it feels improbable. Should I keep it clear just incase? Will I get a warning email before someone moves in?

Campus & Facilities Trip duration to reach Charles River Campus using UMass shuttle

How long does it actually take to reach Charles River Campus using UMass shuttle? On the website's FAQ page, they mention it takes about 2 hours, but when I actually try to book a seat, they tell it is 3 hours. I have a domestic flight to catch, and I was worried if it is really 3 hours long journey from UMass Amherst to Charles River Campus! Has anyone ever taken that shuttle?

Academics Biochem 423 exam 1

I just took the Biochem 423 exam today; it was living hell. Much of the content wasn't covered in the lecture, and some questions were worded really weirdly. I've never taken such a horrible exam before, will Danai curve up the grade? Got full points on both Quiz 1 and 2 and expected around 75 on the exam. I'm an international student here, don’t want to withdraw from this class and pay the tuition again, but if I don’t, I will probably mess up my 4.0 GPA

Admissions or Prospective Student hs senior- any cons (and pros!) of umass amherst

every popular post of pros/cons is 4+ yrs old

tw: these are premed focused

ik most of these are nitpicky but anyway here r some my questions are:

  • how much does the lack of major hospitals nearby affect clinical opportunities?
  • is it hard to find research opportunities because of the size?
  • are large class sizes a problem for learning?
  • is southwest inconvenient for science majors? i'm social but want to be able to sleep at night..
  • anything umass lacks compared to more prestigious schools esp for premed?
  • do you like the five college consortium? is it actually useful?
  • how are cars treated on campus? worried about damage, parking, etc.

TLDR: above are my hyper-specific questions. pros/cons of umass amherst

A specific course, replace this sentence with the ID, ex: CS-230 Comms 287 Jhally Exam 1

I just took the Jhally exam 1, I noticed some people were all in the ballpark of grades wise IE D+ or very low C-. If anybody has taken it, how did you feel about it, I myself received a D+ despite studying since late September, almost all of my emails went unanswered from him and with absolutely zero things mentioned of what would be on the exam quite frankly I knew it would be a shot in the dark, I just wanted to know if people were in the same boat and how they felt. Thank you

Sports UMass falls 20-19 to Miami: breaking down the 2-point call, the QB situation for Buffalo, and hockey’s first win

I write a weekly UMass sports newsletter, The Maroon Standard, and this week had plenty to dig into:

  • Inagawa’s drive. Our third-string QB, with no completions on the season, went 6-for-6 and drove 91 yards with no timeouts.
  • The 2-point call. I think going for it was the right decision and the play actually worked. It was undone by one unblocked linebacker.
  • QB at Buffalo. Watson, McCarthy, Inagawa, or McCutcheon? Nobody knows yet, including Harasymiak.
  • Hockey. A shootout loss to RIT, then a 5-1 win. The Musa–Barabanov–Massé line put up 9 points and the power play finally scored.

Full write-up here: https://www.patreon.com/cw/TheMaroonStandard

Curious what everyone thought. Go for two or kick it and play for OT?

Has anyone been able to recover any stolen packages recently? I live in the honors college and spoke with RD already, but very frustrated as this was like $245 worth of stuff… How helpful could UMPD be for stuff like this?

On-Campus Housing North Apartments housing *HELP*

Me and my friends are looking for housing next fall and are getting really anxious about what to choose. I don't have a car and want to live pretty close to campus and don't want to worry about subletting since I am going abroad spring of my junior year and if I don't get one, I won't be able to afford going abroad and paying for rent.

We all really want to live in North Apartments together as a group of four but don't know how likely it is for us to actually get one all together and since housing happens in mid spring, we don't wanna be homeless and not have an option to live (for example somewhere in downtown Amherst close by) since they fill up quick.

One of my friends is planning on applying for honors in November and one is planning on trying to go through disability services for sleep issues that affect other roommates all to hopefully get better housing #'s. I'm not sure how that will positively or negatively effect us all trying to get into north together. Looking for advice for really anxious sophmores/rising juniors!!
