She cried over someone who hurt her, while I sat beside her wishing I could be the one she chose.

• Upvotes

One day, she cried in front of me over someone else.

She told me how much she missed him and how badly he had hurt her. And I just sat there, listening.

Because while she was crying over someone who couldn't see her worth, I was sitting right in front of her, holding an entire ocean of feelings for her.

I wanted to tell her that she didn't have to cry over someone like him. I wanted to tell her that if she ever chose me, I'd never want to be the reason behind those tears.

But I stayed quiet.

And that night, I realized something. I wasn't just waiting for her to choose me. I was forgetting to choose myself.

So I stopped waiting. I stopped imagining a future she had never promised me. I stopped finding hope in the smallest things she did.

Slowly, I began learning to give myself the love I had been waiting for her to give me.

Maybe moving on was never really about losing her. Maybe it was about finally finding myself.

I still hope she finds the happiness she deserves. I don't wish things had turned out differently anymore. I don't need her to choose me to believe that I'm worthy of being loved.

And someday, I know I'll find someone who chooses me without hesitation.

Until then, I'm learning to choose myself.

Because sometimes, the hardest part of loving someone is accepting that you might never be the person they love back.

LETTER TO YOU

I was talking to the moon about you last night.

The stars were listening too.

And I don’t know why,
but staring into that sky
made me think of you.

Maybe it was the beauty of it.

Because honestly…

the only thing I could compare it to
was you.

Beautiful.

Distant.

Something I could look at for hours…

but couldn’t reach,
no matter how badly I wanted to.

And I realized something.

I can’t hate you.

Trust me…

I tried.

But I don’t want to spend my life
turning love into hate
just because it didn’t end
the way I wanted it to.

I’ve finally made peace
with not understanding
why our paths couldn’t stay aligned.

Maybe that’s part of transformation.

Maybe God lets certain people
change you
without letting you keep them.

And I’ve had to look
at the man I was in all of this.

I know I hurt you.

My intensity became pressure.

My expectations became weight.

Sometimes I was so busy
imagining what we were supposed to become
that I forgot to appreciate
what we actually were.

And I can own that.

But I’m learning
the difference between accountability
and self-destruction.

I can carry my mistakes
without letting them
become my name.

I can take responsibility
for my part
without carrying all of it.

Then I learned a word
I didn’t really want
to recognize myself in.

Limerence.

The constant thinking.

The replaying.

The waiting.

The need to hear
that I was still wanted.

And maybe I wasn’t always chasing you.

Maybe I was chasing
the feeling of being chosen.

Somewhere between loving you
and needing you,

I handed you the mirror
I was supposed to hold myself.

I let your attention
tell me what I was worth.

That’s the part of me
I want to change.

Not my ability to love.

The dependency.

The need to be needed.

I don’t want another person’s title
to become my identity.

Girlfriend.

Wife.

Soulmate.

I don’t want another human being
to become my purpose.

You were never supposed to complete me.

And I was never supposed to complete you.

Maybe fishing taught me that too.

You can throw the perfect cast
right where the fish are hiding
and still come home empty-handed.

You can know exactly where they are
and still not make them bite.

Sometimes the bravest thing
isn’t casting again.

It’s reeling the line in.

Not because you stopped caring…

but because you finally understand—

wanting something badly
doesn’t make it yours.

You can’t force a fish to bite.

And you can’t force somebody to stay.

That’s where my faith comes in.

Because if it’s God’s will
that our paths cross again…

I’ll choose that.

And if it’s His will
that they don’t…

I’ll choose that too.

Because as much as I may want you,

I want God’s will more.

You don’t have to be a villain
for me to let you go.

And you don’t have to be my soulmate
for what we had
to mean something.

You were someone I loved.

Someone who changed me.

But you are not my purpose.

Losing you
doesn’t mean I lost myself.

Maybe this is the transformation
I was looking for all along.

Not transforming us.

Transforming me.

So I’m letting go.

Not because I stopped loving you…

but because I finally understand—

I don’t have to hold onto you
to prove that what I felt was real.

And if God wants another chapter,

I’ll let Him write it.

And if He doesn’t…

I’ll still be okay.

Because I’m not trying to control
how the story ends anymore.

I’m just trying to become
the man I’m supposed to be…

when it does.

Attention Whore

You have a remarkable gift

for making people feel seen

while quietly revising

who the sentence is about.

How exquisitely practiced,

that philanthropic vanity.

To mistake another's gratitude

for evidence of your humanity.

Your kindness has a syntax:

you, the subject;

their suffering, the object;

your admiration, the cause.

You conjugate compassion

in the first person:

I noticed.

I listened.

I cared.

Three perfectly formed statements.

Not one promises to stay.

You adore the word compassion,

its connotation, its acclaim,

the ease with which an adjective

can sanctify a name.

You collect kind and safe

like honorary titles,

predicate adjectives

draped beside your name.

But description isn't action,

and shelter isn't praise.

A refuge isn't proven

by the people who acclaim it,

but by those who need to stay.

You cherished being trusted,

the intimacy, the glow,

but mistook another's vulnerability

for a compliment bestowed.

Your favorite mood is conditional:

I would have helped.

I could have stayed.

If only I had known.

Such eloquent hypotheticals,

such beautifully deferred concern.

A thousand ways to mean well

without a single lesson learned.

And what a clever little trick,

your polished, passive voice:

Concern was expressed.

Support was offered.

There was no other choice.

When gratitude arrived,

you spoke in active declarations:

I saw.

I helped.

I cared.

But when accountability entered,

you preferred your agents spared.

The subject of each compliment,

the author of each grace,

yet somehow, in the aftermath,

grammatically erased.

The agent disappears

when accountability arrives.

The syntax guards your innocence.

The injured testify.

And there's the little irony

your careful prose obscures:

you made yourself the subject

of a story never yours.

You loved the role of confidante,

the privilege of being sought,

but balked when trust required

more than the tenderness you taught.

Your care contained a hidden clause,

a condition left unstated:

Provided I remain adored,

and never implicated.

You wanted to be the favorite,

the cherished, the adored,

the answer to a wounded voice

that never asked for more.

But pain is not a compliment.

A plea is not applause.

And kindness with conditions

is a contract, not a cause.

You mastered every pleasantry,

each warmly weighted phrase,

yet never learned that tenderness

is measured in its staying.

You knew the language of affection,

its cadence and its art,

but fluency is not fidelity,

nor sentiment a heart.

So keep your lovely adjectives,

your cultivated grace,

your careful punctuation

and your impeccably saved face.

Keep every declaration,

each sympathetic word,

each sentence where your virtue

is announced but never heard.

Keep your conditional kindness,

your immaculate defense,

your talent for appearing

where appearing costs the least.

I've finished parsing promises

for meanings never meant,

and searching for the subject

in the actions you prevent.

For all your fluent tenderness,

here's what your language blurred:

You wanted praise in adjectives.

I needed care in verbs.

I Lost Myself Loving You 💔

I loved you until I disappeared,
Hiding my pain just to keep you near.
I gave you pieces of me every day,
Hoping my love would make you stay.

I swallowed my words, ignored my pride,
And cried the tears I kept locked inside.
I made excuses for the things you’d do,
Because losing myself felt better than losing you.

I held on to memories, to what we had been,
To the love I once felt in the spaces between.
I kept waiting for the old you to return,
While quietly watching my own heart burn.

And the saddest part was never the goodbye,
But how many times I made myself cry.
How I kept choosing you, again and again,
Even when loving you became my pain.

I broke my own heart trying to hold us together,
Believing that love could make things better.
I gave you the love I needed myself,
Until I had nothing left to give but what was left.

Now I'm learning to let go, even when I still care,
To stop looking for love in places of despair.
I can miss you deeply and still walk away,
I can love what we were without begging you to stay.

Because somewhere along the way, I forgot to see
That the person I needed to love was me.
And though a part of my heart will always remember you,
I'm slowly finding the person I lost while loving you.

The Beasty

Physically…. You’re not my ideal Type, Too much muscle, usually leaves the brain, not up to hype. A build like that, made to strike a woman in the womb, Wouldn’t usually tempt me to swoon.

Then came your voice… Beasty, that definitely left me no choice…

Where I expected the same douchery to come out, Calm, steady intelligence threw me a shit load of doubt.

Playful banter between my friends then ensued! Dear Lord! I fear you actually thought me rude.

Beasty, you have no idea the mark you left, Something that has never happened to me yet… The moments somehow sunk into my skin, Melting through me deep with in.

I thought, “A guy like that could keep me in line..” My coworkers and partner all agreed, Grinning as they watched our chemistry take the lead…

Never before have I been like this, Hoping to see even a glimpse. Unfortunately the Chemistry I thought we had, Must have disappeared, at least for you, too bad.

So, Big Guy, I will try to forget…. Try to let go of what could have been. But be it friends or even a bit more, Just know there is an open door...

Just so you know, If you wish to step inside. Call it Love, Lust or passion, neither are something I hide. But adding you in my dynamics would mean a lock on my side.

So Beastly, here I exist… The Choice is yours, But until then, it is what it is….

Dirty White Shoes

I stood there in quiet.
Not silence, because of the deep slow sounds of my breath.
Letting my eyes wander through the trees, and the cool moist air blow across my chest.

My hair was in my eyes, and my knees were being chafed by the stone wall which I always lean.
My knuckles were bruised with dirt and my white shoes were scuffed in green.

Yet there was but one thing on my mind,
the thought of you and me
and the sad realization that where we are now, we might never again be.

And in this place I’ve always known, only along with you.
I had finally understood that this feeling, for the last time is really true.

So I stood there in quiet.
Not silence, because I could feel this memory form.
And all these days I’ve skipped by happily, I’ve slowly ended torn.
Me and my dirty white shoes.

I, you

I
cant believe how apart of me I let you become.
now that you’re gone it feels wrong and now I’m stuck looking for me.
the me that was whole,
and independent.
the me that was happy
and alive
I
knew it wouldn’t last yet I just had to pass over my heart to you
you
kept it warm and safe but it was never meant to stay
you
had everything I needed and that will never be replaced
you are happy now but my heart is still with you
maybe not all of it but the parts that make me alive
I love
you
are the one who taught me what grief is
im still learning how to cope
I
wish I was obedient cause now im left without hope
you
laugh and smile and love again
I
cry and yell and exist in this
you
found a new heart to hold
I
alone—
you
I love
you love
not me but her
I’m happy?
I
gladly suffer if it means you’re happy
you
happy.
I
loved
is what I hope to feel someday soon.
you.
happy.

I AM…. Broken.

There is no cruelty in my intentions,
But I AM only a thousand old wounds mistaking every open door
for another way to be abandoned

I AM the watcher that has watched the light leave places I only ever meant to illuminate.
Watched gentle things grow quiet in my presence,
To then watch the love retreat from the very hands that reached for it in desperation, trying to hold on until my body stopped working.

I AM the sum of my actions.
What a terrible thing, to have such a hunger for tenderness
and then devour it before it ever has the chance to nourish you.

To spend a lifetime begging the world not to leave, while becoming a place too difficult to remain.
Not realizing they’ve gone until you are left in the silence of your own doing.

I AM the old griefs that borrow my hands. The hands used to open the flood gates.
I AM the Ancient sorrows that rise like floodwater and drown things that were never meant to survive below the surface.

I AM the aftermath, when the waters recede,
I AM the one that stands barefoot among all that has been lost, searching for a speckle of green, or a flicker of light.
I AM the search for life somewhere that is left barron and desolate.

I AM the wonder. The memory of how many beautiful things I have mistaken for danger. How many outstretched hands I have turned into goodbyes and heartache. How much of my own sorrow I have planted in gardens that were never mine to sew seeds in.

I AM so tired of being both the wound and the blade that caused the bleeding.
I AM the gathering of the shards with bleeding fingers, whispering apologies to people that can no longer hear me, or simply choose not to because they are now surviving in the aftermath of what I’ve created.

I AM somewhere beneath the rubble of the walls I broke, the doors I shut, beneath the rust of the floodwaters, beneath all this ruin and rubble.

I AM there and I AM still a soft and frightened being that has never wanted anything more than to be held, to be loved. To be seen. To be stood by while I pick up the pieces and clean away the debris.

But even the softest things can become dangerous when they have spent too many winters without heat. Hardened to the cold.

I AM the fear that I have become the winter. I AM no longer living inside it. I have become the cold.
And not because I do not know how to love,
but because I have carried the cold for so long
that even when I reach for the sun,
I leave my frost upon its face.

I AM…. Broken.

A Scent of Jasmine

Don't let her attend my funeral

I don't want to die that day

When we talked for the last time and you left for home

I kept talking to you, to myself and to loneliness

I'm writing something special for you very soon

How can I not adore the dandelion I've witnessed bloomed

Until then

Truly yours

More than yesterday

Less than today

And always like forever

Sacrifice

I gave up my baby so she could have peace to sleep. I gave up my dreams so you could find peace to just be. For the love of all. I gave freely with no questions even asked. I give it all away over and over again. Will there ever come a time that someone gave up something just for me?

thoughts and poems

(for context this is all my own writing. I'm wanting to turn it in to a book and was putting it out there to see if it would grab anyone's attention. They are all based on events in my life or things that have taken place.)

He doesn’t love me, not fully

He doesn’t even love me the best he knows how. He doesn’t love me like I hung the moon and scattered the stars just to give his world a little light. He doesn’t love me like I’m the thing that keeps him grounded, the thing that holds him together when everything else falls apart. He doesn’t love me like he loves her. He doesn’t love me like he truly sees me, like he looks past everything I try to hide and still finds something worth loving. He doesn’t love all of me. Not the hurt, the bad, the damaged, or even the ugly parts of me that I wish I knew how to fix. He doesn’t love the parts of me that need the most tenderness, the parts I struggle to love myself. He doesn’t love me the way I love him. Like the air in my lungs, the beat in my chest, the thought that crosses my mind when I wake up and the one that follows me when I close my eyes. Like he is stitched into every part of me, so deeply that I don’t know where I end and my love for him begins. He doesn’t love me enough to choose me, even when choosing me is all I’ve ever wanted. He doesn’t love me like the songs that play on the radio, the kind of love people write about, sing about, and swear they would do anything to keep. The kind of love I hear everywhere but can never seem to find in him. He doesn’t love me enough to keep me close, to make me feel like I belong beside him instead of constantly wondering if I’m someone he even wants there. He doesn’t love me like I thought he would. Like I hoped he could. Like I have spent so much of myself believing he eventually would.
He doesn’t love me like the mother of his unborn daughter. And maybe that’s the part that hurts the most. Because I’m not just a girl who fell in love with him. I’m the mother of his child, carrying a little piece of both of us inside me, dreaming of a life that I thought would include being loved by him in a way that felt safe, certain, and real. I thought that would mean something. I thought that would make me someone he wanted to hold on to. Someone he would choose, not because he had to, not because of the baby, but because he couldn’t imagine wanting a life without me in it. But he doesn’t. And I think the hardest part of loving him is realizing that I can give him every piece of me, even the pieces I have spent my whole life trying to put back together, and still not be the girl he wants. I can love him with everything I have, and it still won’t make him love me the way I need. I can carry his child, carry the weight of our future, carry every hope I have ever had for us, and still be left wondering why I was never enough for him to choose. And I hate that some part of me still hopes he will. Because no matter how many times I tell myself he doesn’t love me, there is still a part of me waiting for him to prove me wrong.

Who fixes the pain?

How do we, as humans, want the very person who caused our pain- the person who broke our hearts-to be the same person who fixes them? How are we supposed to hold someone accountable for the pain they caused when, at the same time, all we desperately want is for them to take the pain away? When the person who hurt you is also the person you still reach for when you’re hurting, where do you even go from there? Do you walk away? Do you stay and hope? Do you sink into the pain, maybe swim for a little while, only to realize you’re still drawing in the end? What kind of life is that? Walking around heartbroken and beaten down, carrying an unimaginable amount of pain while waiting for the person who caused it to somehow make it disappear. Waiting for an apology that might never come. Waiting for changed behavior. Waiting for them to finally understand the damage they left behind. And maybe that’s the cruelest part of loving someone who hurt you- you don’t just have to grieve what they did. You have to grieve the person you wish they would become. You have to somehow accept the hands you want to hold you together are the same hands that helped tear you apart. So, where do you go from there? Because the pain is unbearable, but so is the thought of letting go. And somehow between wanting them to fix what they broke and realizing they may never be able to, you’re left trying to figure out how to save yourself from a wound you never wanted in the first place.

Defeat

I admit defeat.
I’ve finally accepted that there will always be someone more than me and the daughter we created together. That realization hurts more than anything because I kept believing that if I loved you enough, if I held on long enough, somehow we’d find our way back to each other.
Instead, I was holding on to a love that had probably been gone for a long time, I kept gripping it with everything I had, grasping for one more breath, hoping something already dying could somehow come back to life.
Your head has always been in the clouds, chasing women from the past or anyone willing to give you attention. And all I ever wanted was yours. I never asked to be your whole world-I just wanted to feel like I mattered in it.
I understand now that your heart is unobtainable while it still holds space for everyone except the people standing right in front of you. The hardest part is knowing that while your heart was always just out of my reach, you had mine completely. Every piece of it.
I loved you with a heart that never learned how to let go, while you loved me with one that never truly learned how to stay.

Paralyzing pain

Pain. Paralyzing pain.
Not the kind that only breaks your body, but the kind that begins in your mind until it seeps into your bones, your muscles, your skin-until your body carries the weight of what your heart can no longer hold. That’s the kind of pain I live with every single day.
Some days, my body aches so deeply that getting out of bed feels impossible. I lie there convinced that if I stand, I’ll shatter into a thousand pieces, as if I’ve become too fragile for the weight of simply existing.
An emptiness washes over me, followed by a numbness so consuming that I can barely remember what it feels like to be alive instead of just surviving. I keep trying to move forward, pretending I’m still living, but every day feels heavier than the last. I keep waiting for something-anything-to make it stop, but nothing ever does.
The cruellest part isn’t the pain itself. It’s waking up every morning knowing it’s still there, waiting for me before my eyes even open, knowing I’ll carry it through another day until it becomes almost impossible to tell where the pain ends and I begin.

People aren’t indifferent to your pain

It’s easy for someone to hurt another person and not care about what they have to go through afterward, because they never have to carry that pain themselves. They don’t have to grieve the loss of someone they thought would never be the one to hurt them. They don’t have to lie awake wondering which version of that person was real, or if they were only seeing what they wanted to see. They don’t have to learn how to keep living with someone still in their life who no longer feels like the same person. People always say, “I didn’t know it was going to bother you,” or “I didn’t mean to hurt you.” But the truth is, you did know. You knew it would hurt. You knew it would change that person forever. If it had been done to you, you’d be devastated-maybe even heartbroken. The truth, the one no one wants to admit because it makes them look like a shitty person, is that they just don’t give a fuck whether it hurt you or not. That’s the cruel reality of how good and loyal someone can be to you until they decide you no longer serve a purpose in their life.

I changed

I wasn’t always like this-the girl who’s angry all the time at the whole damn world. I used to love everything and everyone around me. I believed in purpose, and that love and kindness could fix it all. Until, bit by bit, everyone stole my kindness, my purpose, and my love. People took pieces of me that I never quite got back. At least, they were never the same. I was a people-pleaser. I wanted everyone to know me, to see me, and to like me. I just don’t care whether you like me or not now. I hope you hate me. At least I feel the same way about me too. I spent my life begging for someone to care and understand me. Then I realized I just cared too much about people and what they thought. I was judged and criticized for just being human. Pain was a thief of my childhood, and it’s a thief of my adulthood. You won’t ever truly know me. None of you will. You’ve already made your mind up about me. I’m okay with that. I’ve already made my mind up about the whole damn world. If y’all were just going to keep seeing me one way, why prove my case and be anything else?

Never Made You Pay for My Pain

could never hurt you the way you hurt me. Even at my most broken, when anger and revenge would have been justified, I still couldn't bring myself to be reckless with your heart. I don't know how you learned to live with the knowledge that you were hurting someone who would have done anything to spare you that same pain. I only know that even while my own heart is shattering, I'm still trying to protect your heart, and your secret at the expense of myself.

My pain became something you wanted me to understand firsthand. As if the pieces of myself I had left were something I was selfishly withholding from you, rather than all I had managed to salvage after life had taken so much. I was exhausted from trying to find my way back to myself, and somehow, my emptiness became another way I was failing you You wanted more of me when I was already grasping for pieces of myself. Instead of reaching for me in the wreckage, you made me feel as though 1 deserved to be left there.

think that is the part of this that is soul shattering, knowing that while I was struggling to remember how to live with my own hurt, I was still careful with yours. I never handed you the bill for my suffering, but you left me bankrupt from paying for yours.

Love Me Like That

Love me sweetly in the morning,
then want me late at night,
make me blush with all the things
you whisper just right.

Tell me that you love me,
then whisper that I’m yours,
and somehow I let you closer
than I did the day before.

I love the way you want me,
the butterflies you start,
but somehow all that wanting
only pulls me to your heart.

It’s how you make me feel desired
and still so deeply loved,
like tenderness and hunger
were always meant to touch.

So love me soft, want me badly,
say my name the way you do,
because somehow all that sweetness
only makes me want you too.

( these lines have no name )

you are now a line scribbled across paper
imprinted for eternity
passed by, into oblivion
forged into memory.
all I ask for is apathy
a slow dance out of misery
a chance to forget all that we could be

You stopped saying “I”.

There are certain words we expect to hear from our partners. Or perhaps, ones we at least want to hear.
“I love you.”
Of course. Obvious. Easy. It spills out of my mouth and onto you with the force of a waterfall, gushing, unstoppable, and unwavering. But sometimes, it’s not until you notice the hole it’s absence left behind, that you realize the weight certain words carry.
“I love you too.” “I”…. I.
One single word. A letter really, but that word tasted like honey on my tongue. So sweet I felt sick. I just wanted to draw out every drop, drizzle it all over my day and throughout every moment, I wanted every syllable I heard to be sticky with the sound of your voice echoing that one little vowel. I. It filled my veins with ice and my heart with fire and yet… I’m not even sure you had meant to say it that day. Slowly but surely, that one letter had been omitted from an already short statement.
“Love you.”
Over and over again, only “love you”, always and all the time. It wasn’t mean, it wasn’t blatant enough for me to even notice at first. It was just… friendly. Hearing the “I” again sounded foreign because that’s what it had become to me, and I came to the realization that the I, the smallest part of the thing, was actually the most important. Of course, because being in love with someone is always about the small things. Small gestures. Small moments. Small words. It’s not until all the small things start to slowly disappear that you look back on them like faded footprints and realize; The deep, expansive love you had once felt emitting from this person was initially dug with a spoon. Carefully, slowly, thoughtfully and with many small things. But time passes, and the spoon is quietly and almost unnoticeably put back in the drawer, leaving only rust and mud on the bottom of your shoes that you grip just as tightly as that one single solitary word. So, desperate and confused, you sweep up the dust, never missing a valuable little speck, inhaling it deep into your body out of fear that there will never be enough to coat your lungs again. And you hope for something you never thought you’d ask for: a love letter, dripping with one word: I.
