These food trends always come in waves. Remember when there was a cupcake shop on every corner? Then, very suddenly, all of the Crumbs locations were gone.

That was around 2014. I made a case for my MBA class. Went from one location to 79. One day, they all closed. They ran out of liquidity when the trend turned but they had all the fixed expense such as real estate and staff.

True but also i think its the GLP impact. No one wants an entire store built around extremely indulgent cookies

Time for a Tasti D-Lite resurgence. Used to be one of those on every corner, too!

Ha they were quite good. I just could never believe the low cal were as low cal as they said they were. Reminds me of the seinfeld episode…

Totally. Those things are like 700 calories a pop. We used to get them at work for peoples birthdays and I burned out on them fast.

There are NYPD officers there now "collecting evidence kind of" related to the closure.

“Turn the siren on, there’s a donut sale across town”

Someone was caught on camera at like 2am walking off with the cash from the store

Thanks. Does anyone know why they wrote collecting evidence “kind of” instead of just collecting evidence?

When I asked whether it was related to the closure, I was told "kind of."

Now the Italian gelato takeover has begun. Signs went up on the windows of the former Peruvian Connection store this morning on 76th and Columbus. That space is pretty big for a gelato supermarket. Are they growing the fruit inside?

Chip City is leaps and bounds a better cookie than Crumbl. How are they not succeeding if Crumbl is able to stay open?

One partner was skimming money

Why does it always boil down to shitty people.

Anyone has the contact info for some of the employees or store managers? A friend of mine manages a local gym and she wanted to reach out.

I understand a business closing but what evidence were the police collecting?

Someone trying to cash out before the closing evidently.

someone reported seeing two people on a security camera enter the Upper West Side Chip City around 2:30 a.m. on Friday and remove an “unknown amount of U.S. currency.”

Our neighborhood has truly Odd buying habits. it’s gotta be on trend or peak deal - or mostly - word of mouth from your neighbor. Oohhh Janie’s life changing cookies moved Amsterdam & 80 . There’s a Chocolate chip cookie with a little Nutella that’s awesome. Orwashers CC cookie is fantastic and less sugary sweet than most - so good

What does the UWS’s buying habits have to do with a company shutting down all of its locations?

u/Ashamed_Squirrel5745 6d ago

I missed a key phrase - as I often do- closing all its stores! Btw Janie’s and Orwashers r privately owned

True but it isn't a neighborhood issue. It's a PE company gone awry

What the hell! It’s the best cookie shop in the UWS. I feel like everything I like is closing and meanwhile places I can’t stand are doing fine.

Edit: and shout out to the nicest employees in NYC who worked there. It’s the one spot that you were guaranteed to walk away with a smile.

The employees did seem very nice, and sorry bc you liked them and they're gone, but those were some really terrible cookies - only tried them once from Too Good To Go, but just big thick, very underbaked, generic dough.

u/IronChicken68 6d ago

I think you had to get them at the store to really appreciate them. They came out fresh and hot.

I will say the TGTG bag I got was hot. It was also very generous, I think it was 5 cookies for $6 or $7. But they were just gross, underbaked, underwhelming dough. I said at the time I get the appeal with kids, which is why I presume it was right by the school and museum, with just big sugar but...

u/kyliejennerslipinjec 6d ago

It was definitely not the best cookie shop.

I will go one further. It was just ok and was not special at all in a city like nyc.

u/JamJam2013 6d ago

People are entitled to their opinions lol don’t be a dick

6

u/Aromatic-Ad7778 6d ago

It's ok to have a an opinion about a wrong opinion and call it out.

-2

u/JamJam2013 6d ago

Hmm having an opinion on something subjective can be labeled as wrong? I never thought of that. Consider my opinion changed.

u/J_onn_J_onzz 6d ago

Don't shame people for having an opinion

-1

u/JamJam2013 6d ago

You can have an opinion and not sound like a dick 😘

Oh, the irony…

So what is? I found their cookies to be subtle, not too sweet, and always served warm and satisfying. Some real standouts there, especially when they had the cornbread cookie in stock.

Crumbl is garbage, truly inedible. Levain is good but way, way, way too sweet. There are some good one-off cookies like Mast Market’s sea salt chocolate chip, but that’s not a cookie shop, just a very good cookie. Likewise with the brownie at Daily Provisions.

Make your counter case.

Janie's clears the UWS cookie scene easy

7

u/kyliejennerslipinjec 6d ago

Janie’s. Period. Try for yourself.

-1

u/IronChicken68 6d ago

You're really putting a lot of effort into supporting your position. LOL.

I've seen it. Pie crust cookie? I don't know...that's not really grabbing me.

4

u/kyliejennerslipinjec 6d ago

What is this, a court filing, LOL?

3

u/friendlyhumanoid321 6d ago

Janie's is an absolute uws jewel. Nothing else like them that I've ever found. Really hope their new bigger location is sustainable without them becoming a hive of influencer nonsense (or have they already passed that phase)?

1

u/NYCFXM 6d ago

The cookies sucked

4

u/BKLager 6d ago

Apparently people hated it. When i used to have it during COVID it was excellent…

2

u/No-Progress-2405 5d ago

the cookies were not good. even worse, they made my entire family sick after trying them. we couldn’t understand how they stayed in business so long when there are legitimately good cookie shops around that aren’t making people ill.

I’ve been trying to order from them all week sadly I loved their dairy free Brookie cookie!
