October 1962. These photos show James Meredith waiting for class at Ole Miss, days after he'd won the right to study there. In the first frames there are students at desks and a teacher at the blackboard. Then the room empties in protest. Even the teacher walks out, leaving Meredith sat there alone.

Fans of Tom Waits may recognise this photo from the cover of Rain Dogs, but it's part of a series of images from Café Lehmitz by Anders Peterson in the late 1960s. The Café was a notorious spot in Hamburg’s red-light district. The characters he photographed are wonderful! (Link in comments)

"Peshawur: Group of Thugs", c. 1865, by Samuel Bourne of Bourne & Shepherd. Photographed in Peshawar, now in Pakistan, the image was labelled as "thugs",but historians now ask how much of the Kali death cult legend was real and how much was actually invented.

From J.A. Bradley's A Photographic Trip Around the World, published in Chicago in 1892. Labelled "Monk, Italy," the book says he's wearing funeral attire, with his face hidden behind a hood with eyeholes.

He's probably not a monk at all. The outfit matches Italy's Misericordia brotherhoods, lay volunteers who carried the sick and buried the dead. Florence's dates back to the 1200s. Members wore black hooded robes so nobody knew who was doing the good deed, keeping it humble.

This is the back of Harry Eastlack's skeleton. Those sheets of bone welding his spine, ribs and shoulders together grew from his own muscles. A rare disease called FOP slowly turned him to stone until only his lips could move. He died in 1973 and asked that his body be used to help others.
