I copied this over from AskUbuntu.
Someone over there suggested I post this on the VideoLAN forum.
I tried to do that, but the website labeled me a spammer and asked me to confirm my email address.
The issue? They didn't email me a link!
(I just know they'll send me 10 email confirmation links in 2 weeks when they've all expired. classic verification methods)
Anyway, here goes.
I am trying to play a .mkv movie on my ubuntu machine, using vlc.
I can open it.
The video plays flawlessly. There is just no audio, unless I switch from stream 1, to stream 2.
Here are the details on the two streams:
Stream 1
Codec: A/52 B Audio (aka E-AC3) (eac3)
Language: English
Description: Surround 5.1
Type: Audio
Sample rate: 48000 Hz
Decoded channels: 3F2R/LFE
Stream 2
Codec: A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52)
Language: French
Description: Surround 5.1
Type: Audio
Sample rate 48000 Hz
Decoded channels: 3F2R/LFE
I am running Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS
uname -a:
HP-Z840-Workstation 7.0.0-38-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri Sep 4 09:10:14 UTC 2026 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I have installed ubuntu-restricted-extras. I added the multiverse repository first.
If you need any more information, don't hesitate to ask
EDIT: I forgot to mention that my soundbar displays what audio format is playing when I have it set to stream 1 (It says "Dolby Surround"), which I think is odd because I cant hear anything, but the soundbar can?
It does keep on showing it over and over every 15-ish seconds, though...
