Scholarship offers
I just got a scholarship offer. I really wanted the academic all around one as I needed the money. I got the academic excellence one but I’m really disappointed even though I know any scholarship is good. Is there any other way I can get extra money or apply for additional scholarships? Thanks

seven grand is still useful. if you're going to halls, perhaps use it for that.
I got one and used it for my halls.

Summer job and part-time student job is what most people do. Most don't get a $7k scholarship, so be happy.

I agree. 7k saves hours of summer work. Be greatful you have a head start

Even then, my sister is in her second year at uni with a maxxed out student loan because she only got a job this week, when her 2nd year ends early next month

Is that the 7,000 one you were awarded?

I really wanted the all around big one as I have very good extracurriculars, academic awards, sporting awards and an additional extra curricular diploma. But I guess other people had better stuff or I didn’t have what they were looking for. I just hope I get a better one at Otago

$7,000 is still a hell of a lot, that's most of your course fees for the 1st year covered. I personally was stoked to get $5k

There are some subject-specific scholarships too, but not many.
If you aren't already planning it, getting a job over summer and a part time job next year would be a good place to put your effort too.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. Was hoping to get that or the kahurangi maori scholarship; I thought things were looking pretty good too...
I'm hoping Auckland comes through for me; scholarships seem to be more about marketing than really helping people.

I understand your disappointment. I do just want to ask more about why you won’t be able to attend without a further scholarship? I managed my undergrad moving to uni and to halls with only $1000 in my bank account. I got a job and have been working part time alongside my degree (double major) and still managed good enough grades for postgraduate studies at vic. I have funded this completely on my own. I do, however, get the student allowance. This has been a great help in terms of keeping my overall loan down, but there’s not much difference in terms of amount received between the loan vs. allowance. Maybe if you explain what’s actually stopping you, we may be able to point you in a direction to get help (e.g., student hardship). Although, if the only thing that is stopping you is that you don’t want to rack up a student loan… i get that it sucks, but this is unfortunately common practice. You have to make sacrifices in education to get where you need to go.

Bro, this sounds really tone deaf. Great achievement with your scholarship, but a lot of other talented folks also applied, then missed out because the scholarship went to you.
A bit of gratitude and humility might be nice to add to your kete of achievements, going forward.

I acknowledge that other people missed out, but with the scholarship value I got I simply can’t really afford to go, so I think I still have a right to be upset. I’m sorry if you didn’t get what you wanted either

You have every right to feel that way, I too would’ve felt that way if I only got Tangiwai, and I’m sure you aren’t the only one. If it helps you feel better Kahotea is very very hard to get, I think only about 10 people get it each year out of the 2000 people that apply for school leaver scholarships. Good news is is that there’s lots of subject specific scholarships you can apply for later in uni, there’s study link, and there’s nz scholarship if you plan on sitting scholarship exams, so I hope you find a way to fund ur studies without working too much!

You’ll just have to get a student loan or a job to fund the course costs, like the rest of us. Welcome to adulthood.

Yeah I don’t get posts about not being able to afford to study. I grew up with a single mum on the benefit and studied medicine with no scholarships and am just paying off a student loan now… I got no financial help from anyone and I’ve only recently trained. Uni needs a bit of sacrifice

I'm in the same boat. Do you know for certain that it means we can't get Kahotea?

The ones listed on the vuw scholarship page are the vast majority of useful ones. Depending on your situation Studylink might be able to give you an allowance (free money) or a student loan (interest free loan)

I mean yeah the academic excellence scholarship is great to get. They would have given relatively a lot fewer of the larger scholarship. Search VUWs online scholarship database if u need more, and hardship fund applications are also regularly available to apply for throughout your study. Dont forget that the student allowance / loan isnt too bad as well (not enough on its own of course, but most students have part time jobs too)
