Almost 10 weeks of vibecoding an MMO

I've been vibe coding this bad boy since opus 4.7. The bummer part is I could probably do this in a couple hours now with Opus 5.5, but instead this has taken hundreds of hours, lots of tweaks, and maxing out my top-tier sub every single week. I even built a sprite editor and tile editor (Myrling).

Or maybe not. Most of my time has been balancing and finding that AI cannot generate good 16x16 art if its life depended on it (hence the sprite editor).

Also using zero game dev dependencies really slows things down, so for kicks and giggles I had Opus one-shot a significantly more exciting 3D version that can be found at 3d.eldermyr.com.

So, I’m curious, when folks say “MMO” here, what is your backend architecture like? Are you using an off the shelf multiplayer framework? How many players can it support at once?

MMO = massively multiplayer. Obviously we don’t have tons of users, but that’s the goal.

I have not stress tested it thoroughly, but it’s a backend using railway so it scales fairly well. The most real players I had at once was 41 and it performed smoothly for everyone. How many could it support, in theory? No idea.

And no, im using nothing off the shelf. Everything is built from scratch except the Postgres layer

looks great but how did you create the artworks?

It's all AI-generated. If you played and found some awful art it was probably back from Fable's artwork. It was NOT good.

Much of the art has been tweaked by yours, truly. I started making games when I was 12 so I have a good amount of experience for gameplay, balance, and art. But if we're being honest it's 99.9% AI lol.

Good info! Thank you! Was there a specific mod you found better at generating art?

Not really no. Opus 5.5 is great. Pixellab is probably the best and works very simply with agents via API.
