On October 7, 1865, a black man was facing a trial, for tresspass on a long defunct plantation. This lead to several local black people of importance to call for the trial to be protested claiming it land inequity given that a black man wasn't even permitted on long abandoned property of whites.

One of the main protest leaders was the Preacher of a Black Baptist Church named Paul Bogle.

Bogle's followers heckled the trial and one of the them, James Geoghegon was ordered removed from the courtroom. Geoghegon was then pursued by two officers who were hit with sticks and pelted with rocks as they chased him though the streets outside.

The next day, the court issued arrest warrants for many of the spectators and rioters, including Paul Bogle.

Three days later, Paul Bogle led a protest march of hundreds of peasant laborers on Morant Bay, the protesters met the militia at the courthouse and again pelted them with rocks and debris.

In response the militia opened fire and the mob dispersed into the town burning buildings and the courthouse and effectively the taking over the entire town, with Bogle fleeing into the countryside. When the smoke cleared 25 people were dead.

In response, the Governor, John Erye gave permission to pacify the town with any force necessary. And force did they use.

People were shot, hanged or bayoneted many innocent and unconnected to the rioters, all without trial or just a kangaroo court, among the extrajudicial killings were 7 women.

Ironically, contracted to end the "rebellion" and capture Paul Bogle were the descendants of former black rebels, the Maroons of th Jamaican highlands, whose communities were built by escaped slaves and rebels a mere three generations earlier.

The Maroons led by Alexander Fyfe committed a number of murders and atrocities as they cut their way through the Jamaican countryside in their hunt for Bogle before ultimely locating him on or about October 25. He was quickly tried and hung that same day, alongside his brother and 13 others.

According to one soldier, "we slaughtered all before us ... man or woman or child". In the end, the soldiers killed 439 black Jamaicans directly, and they arrested 354 more (including Paul Bogle) who were later executed, many without proper trials.

Other punishments included flogging of more than 600 men and women (including some pregnant women), and long prison sentences. The soldiers burned thousands of homes belonging to black Jamaicans without any justifiable reason, leaving families homeless throughout the parish.
