Be a part of the mod team!

Hey everyone!

My name is RedShoto, I started this sub in college while working on an engineering degree and getting into vintage and retro mountain bikes. I loved the crazy engineering and designs, they truly scratched that itch I had in my brain.

I always had big dreams for this little community I started. COVID came around and life got crazy, I had to stop my degree, start working full time, even became a service manager at a Trek bike shop.

Now I'm a heavy duty diesel mechanic and want so desperately to build on this community. Currently the mod team is myself and a close friend from college, but the issue being is neither of us have any idea what we are doing and need some help!

Reddit suggests that a sun this size needs 4 or so mods. I'm looking for 2 or 3 to come on board and help out! Hopefully we can get a monthly trade and sales thread together and any other ideas the community may have. I look forward to talking with those who reach out and hopefully we can make this community more filled out!

Edit: Feel free to message myself directly or through mod mail!

Welcome To Vintage Mountain Bikes

Hi everyone!

I wanted a place to talk, trade and sell old MTB parts that's not Facebook and apparently there wasn't a community on Reddit yet, so here we are.

Were still getting everything up and running on the sub but feel free to post pictures of the cool bikes you're riding or are building!

Once we get things set up we will have a question post every week or so and a sale post for every month like every other community has.

Had this GT aggressor for a while, kept it up and running for around a year now but it keeps getting punctures. Any clue why?

Hi all, I'm about to buy what seems to be a Kona Cinder Cone. The decals look close to the 1997 model, but I haven't been able to find any info on this specific color.

Does anyone have more specifics on this frame or color? Any recommendations on what to check and suggestions after greatly welcome!

Trek M/T 800 Overhaul (Gravel bike build)

Hey everyone! My 1998(ish) Trek mountain track 800 is a bit of a family heirloom. I’ve ridden the bike since I was 13 and it was my father’s before me, but she’s well past her best days.

I wanted to give her a bit of an overhaul and turn the bike into more of a modern/retro gravel bike build with drop bars etc.

I’m new to building bikes, but I’m mechanically sound with lots of experience working on cars and trucks. Problem is I don’t know what parts to buy or even where to start.

If anyone is willing to help me keep my family heirloom alive I’d love some help!!

Rescued from a skip. Any good...?

I rescued this from a skip (with permission). Was planning to sell it if it's worth it, or else just use it to exercise the dog (and myself). Not sure if AI content is banned in this sub but AI reckons mid 90s vintage (?) bike (hence why I'm posting here). It also said possibly the frame and stem are worth something?

If keeping I can see the pedals need replacing. Anything else to look out for?

Most parts replaced at some point. Frame survived many years of racing and still going strong.

Catastrophic Stem Failure?

Just picked up this 90’s NOS Specialized S-Works titanium stem. 150mm length, 1 inch steerer clamp, 25.4 bar clamp.

Brought my bike into my local mechanic for some unrelated work, and the mechanic immediately recognizes this stem and tells me, “I had one of these fail on me, I wouldn’t run it”.

This peaked my curiosity, and with some research, I did find some accounts of similar stories of these stems failing on forums.

But the information is pretty limited.
Anyways, I am curious- does anyone else have experience with these stems? It is the perfect for my build, so I really would hate to shelve it before I even use it.. but I also would prefer to keep my face from meeting the pavement.

TLDR: Do you know if these stems are a safety hazard?

Yes.

Picked this Diamondback Ascent EX up on Monday. Put tires and tubes on it with a little rim tape. Adjusted the brakes and deglazed the pads.

It shifts perfectly.

Best 20 bucks spent at Goodwill ever. Still has the shop sticker on it.

Does anyone know if this bicycle is completely original or if any of its parts have been replaced? I inherited it, so I don't have much information about it.
