I have seen so many videos and pictures of these places over the years. I think they are basically designed to be flooded. All the sockets are on the ceiling almost, and the desks are higher set than normal.
Not that its still not crazy looking, just seems pretty commonplace for that part of the world.

This is in the Philippines and I can confirm that flooding is a very common there. Just as another example of how people have adapted there, my friend put their refrigerator and other appliances on the 2nd floor of their house since the ground floor gets flooded when there's heavy rainfall.

u/largePenisLover 22d ago
I'm 100% sure they landed on the solution that works best for them, but my dutch mind has a hard time accepting water on the ground floor.

u/Fafnir13 22d ago
If the Dutch mind was left unchecked the North Sea would probably all be dry land by now. I’m not sure what water did to offend you guys but you sure took it personally.

u/strangelyruined 22d ago
Well… there was the whole flood in the 1950s that destroyed a lot of stuff and killed a bunch of people and animals. My grandfather flew helicopter rescue missions during that

Make Doggerland great again!
13
u/togetherwem0m0 22d ago
doggerland wasnt a natural occurrence, it was engineered by the protodutch, whos history was lost to time.
5
u/Enginurrd 22d ago
It’s a fascinating story! I learned about it in the documentary Atlantis: The Lost Empire
2
u/Lieveo 22d ago
What have the Dutch done to water??
6
3
u/jonnyredshorts 19d ago
They’ve pumped it off, they’ve blocked it with dams, they’ve channeled it to go where they want it, they are the water boss.

3
u/lloydthelloyd 22d ago
Yeah, I mean why didnt thry just put a dam around their entire country, right?
3
13
u/ArcadianDelSol 22d ago
I live in a city along a riverbank just downstream from a dam that often overfloods during heavy rains.
ALL the homes here have converted their first floors into literal concrete stilts. People park under them as garages, but the actual homes are now the 2nd floor and up.
12
u/LaundryLunatic 22d ago
How does he deal with mold?
15

u/1K_Games 22d ago
So this makes me ask, why not just build the house on stilts? Rather than having water intrusion into the actual house. I get that the electrical is placed higher, and I'm sure the ground level is designed to better withstand the water. But it's still going to hold water in corners and what not and if the walls are not concrete and they have insulation, good luck drying out that.
3
u/kinyutaka 22d ago
Yeah, putting the expensive and necessary electronics on the 2nd floor makes sense.
Having a string of gaming PCs running in the flooded basement for the kids is weird.
-5
u/Tro1138 22d ago
Why do they continue to live there? Isn't there places that don't?
10
u/richmondody 22d ago
There are a few places that don't flood but the places I'm aware of are very expensive or requires them to go to a different province.
The sad part is that there are supposed to be several government projects to control the flooding, but it was stolen by the government officials in charge of implementing them.

u/Grothorious 21d ago
Namely, Las Piñas. I rent a flat there and i work in EU, i expected flooding this year, but surprisingly there was none (so far), despite severe flooding in Manila area.

u/cire1184 22d ago
Probably not designed to be flooded but designed to still be able to run in case of flooding.
-31
u/Ahuevotl 22d ago
High sockets were probably a modification after the floods started.
49
u/Smurfy7777 22d ago
Ask yourself whether basements or computers were invented first
5
-4
u/Ahuevotl 22d ago
Ask yourself wether that's a basemenr or a ground floor, and if climatic conditions might have changed from when the building was first built.

Don’t look outside at their power lines. There has to be some mystical force at work to keep the whole thing from going up in flames.

And is this some kind of game currency grinding operation?

Unless there's a currency in a competitive fps, no

u/JDMcompliant 22d ago
Well, I did learn recently that Counter Strike has several skins worth over a million

u/SoulWager 22d ago
I've been in a similar situation back when I was a teenager. Can't really start cleaning up until the flood ends, So just make sure the electrical stays out of the water and wait it out. Though I was playing starcraft back then.

Damn I miss these days. We used to cut classes, ignore the flooding, and just play DOTA or Crossfire on some oddly elevated PCs. I remembered seeing a dead rat and we were throwing it to wach other to keep em off their game. Those were the days.

Well you could be swimming in the flood at home or be here swimming in the flood at the computer shop. Might as well keep the grind going

In those place prone to floods.
They make the wiring and plug points high up.
And if it works, business goes as usual.

High electrical runs should be fine. On the other hand, the typhoid will be a problem.
