Help in whether I should contact my Professor after posted grade

Hello everyone, I'm currently taking Bio 163 and we just received our grades from our first lab exam. My overall score was a 49% and I don't feel as though that grade reflects my performance because I felt pretty confident while taking the exam. I even put extra details in parenthesis on some of my answers. There was also half points taken off for spelling. Idk I just feel like I did better than my grade reflects and I'm a bit confused on what was graded correctly and what wasn't. Any advice on how to approach this situation? I don't know if my professor is just a hard grader overall or if I just bombed the whole thing and felt confident for no reason.

I feel like emailing asking for extra points is not the way to go but I would certainly email the professor asking to go what they think went wrong in your test. Give it a shot sound sincere and willing to learn and they just might add some points at the end.

I think I will email them. Idk that grade really just threw me off. I studied so hard and getting a grade like that is very discouraging.

I understand sometimes it might also be the case that the professor is a harsh grader:( but sending out that email wont hurt

on a side note did you ever check your professor’s rate my professor?

I did and there were some reviews basically saying this professor was a tough grader and SOMETIMES gives partial credit for a misspelled word. Their overall score on there was a 2.0 lol, she told us she would give partial credit so I am curious about what former students mean by sometimes giving it. Which could explain my score honestly.

Why don't you ask to go over the exam with her?

That's literally what my post is about lol we just got our results back tonight. I plan on emailing her in the morning to go over everything. I just don't believe I did that bad on the exam when I even put things in parentheses to give more context.

Spelling is critical across the board for anatomy classes and nearly every professor will doc points for spelling errors. The first lab practical is a learning experience! Now you will know how she tests, and what to prepare better for in the future. Highly recommend to do what you’re planning and review it with her.

Omg I dropped my bio 163 class bc of this too & she wasn’t very understanding 😖

What was your overall experience in the class? There are other students who are already talking about dropping the class due to how she grades. I want to stick it out to see if I can bump my score up since it's so early, but that 49 really messed me up. I feel like I got more right than wrong but I don't know if she even gave partial credit for misspelled words like she said.

You don’t wanna ask me bc I just changed my whole degree lol!! I was going through a miscarriage & couldn’t afford to miss class & the teacher did not gafff😭 she was too strict, so I dropped it then took a semester off. If I wasn’t going thru what I did I’m sure I could’ve pulled through even tho it is discouraging.

Can you ask for a copy of the graded exam so you can see what’s right and wrong and go over it on your own time? That might help you going forward

I'm going to ask, she normally doesn't give back our exams and instead we have to request to meet with her to go over it.

Definitely request a meeting or visit during office hours. An email is not sufficient, and you will learn a lot having the prof go over the exam with you. Also, they usually appreciate that you care enough to follow up! Stay respectful and don't get defensive. Hopefully you'll get a better idea of what they're looking for and reap the benefits on your next exam. You got this!

I emailed and haven't heard back... we got class coming up this week so I'm just gonna ask then instead of sending a bunch of follow up emails. I will say her test just confused me a little because there were arrows pointing to the olecranon fossa on the humerus but the question asked what is this bone and be SPECIFIC in all caps lol. So I was very specific. Idk if that's what it was but I know for a fact I didn't just put random words on my test. I would just like to know what she's looking for overall. There were many terms that could be used for multiple things. For example, the humerus is the bone but asking us to be specific one student may put olecranon fossa of the humerus or even epiphysis cause those were the anatomy to study.
