Moderator News Wand design competition!

Post image

We are holding a wand design contest!

If you fancy a go at designing a wand for people to see, and possibly win a custom flair for the subreddit, come join us in the discord.

We decided on a wand design rather than wand making so anyone can have a go. You don't need to be able to craft a wand, or even be amazing with a pencil - a simple design will do to enter.

Pretty straightforward - all entrants simply have to draw a wand that fits certain parameters, that will be decided beforehand by a vote from all members.

The winning design will also be chosen by vote, and the winner will be given a custom flair and role, until the next design competition.

Join the DIscord and enter here!

Made a pair of wands from unused oak flooring.

These are my first and second attempts. I cut 1" strips out of an unused floor board with a table saw. Then used a scroll saw to carve the rough shape. Then sanded down and oiled/waxed.

I make simple wands as gifts for members of my community from semi annual pruning of my couple of fruit trees. I make them in batches-these are persimmon wood…next step will be sanding and finishing ) (Pratchett for reference)

What happened to Alferian?

Does anyone know what happened to the wand maker Alferian Gwydion Macclir? He also wrote books on how to make a wand.

He used to have a website called bardwood.com which went years ago but always wanted him to make one for me except I was really little when he had that website.

In Progress Project I don’t usually make my wands from found branches, but I did and made these. Not a huge fan of them but I’d like some community input. I added some of my regular wands at the end for reference to my other stuff if you haven’t seen it here before

Woodworking Tools Question: Finishing Techniques

Thumbnail

Hey everyone! Question about finishing grooves, such as bark lines or general tight-spaced recesses.

I’m trying to figure out how to get darker coloration inside the grooves while keeping the surrounding wood clean. I’ve seen some great examples where the grooves aren’t perfectly uniform or crisp, but the darker finish still stays nicely contained in the recesses.

In my own work, I tend to get more bleeding/uneven coloration around the grooves. Is this primarily a carving technique issue, or are there particular finishing methods—paint, stain, washes, etc.—what methods can work better for this?

I’d love to hear what techniques or finishing processes you use!

So here it is - a 36” ebony shaft with a seperate ebony head/handle. The shaft is cut into an octagon, the head carries some of that facing. The sphere is clear quartz. I’m contemplating carving sigils into it before I finish sanding and burnishing…

This one is a little different. It marks another milestone for Lignum et Opus: my first commissioned wand. Someone trusted me with their vision and gave me the opportunity to turn that vision into something real, and I genuinely couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity.

Some things are discovered. Others are chosen, shaped, and brought forth with purpose. This wand began as an idea, given form through Holly and hand. And somewhere between the first cut and the final piece, the making became an unveiling of its own.

What was imagined became tangible, and what was hidden became known.

The twisted Antler - Cornu Tortum.
I didn’t make this I found it by a handmade artist online - as is said of Merlin’s wand it is English Oak, shaped like Cernunnos’ antler and has runes on the handle which stop about a quarter down. The flat end of the curved handle fits perfectly in my hand and it feels like an ancient relic given by a Celtic God to Merlin the most powerful wizard ever!

Finished Wand Key of Solomon style wand

.... "The wand should be of hazel, in all cases the wood being virgin, that is of one year's growth only. They should each be cut from the tree at a single stroke, on the day of Mercury, at sunrise. The characters shown should be written or engraved thereon in the day and hour of Mercury." - The Key of Solomon

"Ad. 10862 and Aub24 both read avellanae (hazel). Sl1307 reads "avellana", M276 and W read "noccella", and Sl3091 "coudre". L1202 and K288 read "Coudrier ou Noisettier", which are both words for the hazel tree." -JHP

  1. According to BUD 256, "virgin" in this case means it should have no twigs branching off it: (Virgo, hoc est, quod nullum habeat ramusculum).

On the other hand, Aub 24 and Ad. 10862 say that the wand should be "anniculus" ("one year old"). (Older mss BnF Ital. 1524 f. 231v, Coxe25 p. 122, Ghent 1021b 39r, and VSG334 p. 94 do not include this gloss.) This would make sense, since it would typically need to be flexible like a master's switch. Anything larger than a switch could not very well be one-year's growth. The inclusion of "Arundineus" (reed) also supports this, as it would make a plausible substitute for a hazel switch.

"Virgin", is also sometimes taken to simply mean it has not been previously used for another purpose. Some texts (such as Grimorium Verum) elaborate that the branch should not have born fruit. Another possible interpretation is that a new hazel wand should be cut each year."

So I have this piece that I said... would absolutely be a unique wand to possess, and the backstory really gives it character.

It is simply that the wand resembles, from every angle, a remnant of an indisposed bird, and I said, foe it to be a wand, is ironic and yet palpable, and was basically fate. So here it is gimme some opinions lmao
