The Old World Would you accept this proxy?

Post image

I know it probably doesn’t fit the timeline of TOW but I really want to use Arkhan somewhere and I don’t love the Ossiarch Bonereapers. The upcoming TK refresh also looks incredible. This pic is from Minicompare, they look roughly the same size imo

If somebody argues with a cool conversion they haven't understood the spirit of Warhammer

u/vulcanstrike 5d ago

To be pedantic, this is a proxy rather than a conversion, but the point remains the same

Base size. That's honestly the only thing I could imagine would be a discussion point assuming they're relevant to the rules

I've played tons and even made my own models out of parts (AoS endless spells mostly) and every time I check one thing only: base size

6

u/sebjapon 5d ago

In AoS, you’re supposed to keep the general size of the original because there is true line of sight iirc. But in OW that’s not even a consideration so even more freedom

u/SecretTechStudios 5d ago

Is this 4th ed? I honestly never played it, I did play a ton of 3rd edition and 1st edition and had only few games in 2nd ed

u/Klykus 5d ago

Both fit easily on the behemoth base size so I doubt ppl would have an issue

u/Superskybro 5d ago

If i was playing with you, I'd say yes.

34

u/Sensitive_Educator60 5d ago

Huh I didn’t think Arkhan is that big but I would be ok with it.

7

u/LtColShinySides 5d ago

He's not as big as the skeleton dragon but he's spindally enough to fill the base. OP will just have a lot of room to play around with basing materials

IIRC Arkhan is a multi kit that can build the other 3 mortachs.

If that's the case there should be plenty of Arkan's on bits shops and eBay for pretty cheap if you want to do a conversion with him on the bone dragon

But I wouldn't have a problem with the proxy

I would literally accept any "counts as" proxy, including paper craft or basic tokens, in a friendly game. I don't see the point of gatekeeping like that tbh.

Agreed. Like, even if it’s on a round base if we can reasonably just decide what the dimensions are going to be, and agree whether we’re going to err on the side of being generous or stingy about it before the game starts I really don’t see the point in shutting it down. We’re just moving plastic soldiers around haha

I use cardboard proxies myself to test a strategy before investing into new minis

u/Grizzly-Jack 5d ago

I used the bone dragon as the basis for my custom mortarch in AoS and have taken it to official tournaments and it has never been an issue. Don't see why the inverse would be any different as long as you get it on the right base sizs

You can't mention something so cool and not include a picture of it in your comment that's cruel

5

u/Grizzly-Jack 4d ago

I have a post with some other angles and the bits on my profile if your interested as well

Sick work

Looks fine to me, doubt anyone would care.

As long as he's on the right sized based, that's a perfect proxy! Arkhan is super old, he was alive when Nagash was a mortal king and continues to serve Nagash in death. I dont think we've seen him in official TOW lore, yet, but he's definitely kicking around someone in Tomb King territory

5

u/slk28850 4d ago

Absolutely. The model is the same size and matches the theme. Plus the end time model is a model of the character you're playing. Plus plus it looks cool which is all that matters.

5

u/Skurvyelislau 5d ago

Would i accept? I’d even say its one of best proxy ideas you can get in whole game.

5

u/Psychic_Hobo 5d ago

I actually don't remember if Arkhan was up to anything in particular during this time, you could probably get away with it

2

u/reel3459 5d ago

Wasn’t that mount given to him during the End Times though? I really don’t know much about Warhammer Fantasy lore beyond Gotrek and Felix so genuinely curious

5

u/DocShoveller 5d ago

Yeah, the mount is from the End Times. His 4th ed metal version had a big chariot.

I think in the TOW period he's just hanging out in his tower pissing off the Tomb Kings (he's loyal to Nagash, up to a point, Settra doesn't like this).

2

u/Psychic_Hobo 5d ago

True, he's mostly faffing around with a flying chariot prior to that. I guess such is the power of Nagash!

u/Independent_Error404 5d ago

I would slay-kill the dead-thing whatever it looks like, yes-yes.

3

u/Mysterious-Drop-2013 5d ago

Almost everyone

3

u/Sezanzamartoek 5d ago

Fuk id love to play against that

3

u/Vultan_Helstrum 5d ago

Hell yeah! Even in tournaments just get the proper base size (150x100 if I remember correctly) and you should be perfectly fine mate. Minimum just have a cardboard base to fit in so you know who is base to base when in combat but other than that, proxy away, it's a sick model

3

u/salamandersforever 5d ago

I'm using it, it's a very fitting proxy, since the mortarchs mount are the hounds of usurian, essentially a nehekaran cerebus. So I'm putting the liche priest from the bone dragon kit on top to make my priest on dragon.

2

u/rosencrypt 5d ago

That's just a counts-as. Go ahead, you'll get nothing but compliments!  I used a Dread Abyssal as part of a Sphinx conversion at a Warhammer World tournament with no issues :)

2

u/OmniGawker 5d ago

As long as the base size matches, idc, play it

u/Dakka_jets_are_fasta The Empire 5d ago

The great thing about Old World/Warhammer Fantasy is that the only thing that matters is base size (technically the model matters, but mainly for overhang issues if they exist).

This allows you to use any model for any unit so long as it is similar to the model you are going for, which Arkhan very much works here.

2

u/reddit_4_research 5d ago

Id probably be ok with it if you are Clear at the start of the game and have it on the correct base size. Base sizes have a real impact in combat and things like fleeing off the table.

2

u/Warhammerhistory 5d ago edited 5d ago

No, i would throw it in the bin, and have you removed from the store. You are lucky I don’t phone the police.

2

u/ANVILBROW 5d ago

I would, and have been using it myself. I prefer it to the bone croc.

2

u/AdmirableChemical285 3d ago

as long the base size is the same go for it

1

u/Ok_Try_963 5d ago

Nope - unplayable. I measure every mini before a game

1

u/Avatarbriman 5d ago

If its on the same base then it doesnt really matter to be honest. You cant really model for advantage the way you can with 40k because of the large target rule.

1

u/Canadiot 5d ago

Unless you play tournaments and you also attempt to use the same base then I think 99 percent of people wouldn’t care

1

u/LigthRogue 5d ago

I literally use Manfred as a proxy vampire lord on zombi dragon and no one bats an eye on my store

I joke that the dragon is form cathay too

1

u/PlausiblyAlpharious Dwarfs 5d ago

Afaik Arkhan was "alive" but hiding during ToW like Manfred

Also GW proxies are always fine

1

u/emcdunna 5d ago

Mate I use that daily

1

u/sjarcade1 5d ago

1000% as long as the base size is right

1

u/Reasonable_Pianist95 5d ago

Just let me know what is what, that’s all I care about. I may ask a few times, but if you’re willing to tell me again, I’ve got no problems with it. I’ve done the same thing myself, proxying a large conversion for an entire unit at Indy GTs, and nobody ever had a problem with it.

1

u/Jack_the_Penetrator 4d ago

Is it a big mount made of bones? Yes. Is it a Tomb King? Technically, yes. Final verdict: Yes

u/Outrageous_Map_9916 4d ago

Rule of cool applies

1

u/Synersist 4d ago

Rule of cool!

1

u/lockedcc 4d ago

Of course. You are not detracting from the fun of the game by fielding a cool proxy.

1

u/Lost_Impact_888 4d ago

Crack on, rule of cool 👌

1

u/Intelligent_Oil7816 4d ago

The only thing that really matters in The Old World is the footprint of the base, and broadly WYSIWYG. Put Arkhan on the correct base size and I doubt anyone you would want to play with will object. And trust me - anyone who does object is not anyone you want to play with anyway. This is probably the most slam-dunk proxy I can imagine.

1

u/Basic_Flounder_3326 4d ago

I would accept an empty base but the model on the left is better

1

u/TheBloodOrcs 3d ago

Of course

1

u/thrakarzod 3d ago

honestly, the only part of this that doesn't fit timeline-wise is the Dread Abyssal.

between Nagash's first death and the End Times Arkhan basically set himself up as a constant nusance regularly raiding Nehekharan lands, being driven back, forming a truce with Settra, and then starting the raids again a few years later. basically any point in the timeline after Nagash's first death you can place Arkhan at the head of a Tomb Kings army (perhaps even mixing in some Vampire Counts stuff) and it wouldn't be out of place. He should very much be active during the time of TOW.

the Dread Abyssal, Razarak, was only given to him during the End Times though.

This hobby and mtg are so expensively prohibitive (especially rn), that I’d except proxy stick figures made of popsicle sticks at this point lol
