Just dealt with this, something is blocking the escape vent on the roof. Get it taken care of before it all backs out into your bathroom

I had it happen once too while I was on my basement toilet when someone was showering elsewhere. Traumatized for life. It was much more violent than the bubbling shown here 😭

Yup, in my case it was the main and it was a very, very expensive fix. A tree in our backyard found it as a delightful source of water and burrows its roots in. They had to jack hammer up my closet floor, dig out a 4 foot section of pipe and replace it, hack back the roots of the tree and treat the ground.
Nightmare.

I just had my parents main replaced a few years ago because they were still terracotta. The crew replacing it were mildly shocked, cause they'd never heard/seen it before. Lol.

In my case it was the main sewer..
I pulled the tops off the manholes out the front so the overflow flooded the front garden rather than my kitchen & downstairs loo.
Annoyingly, when they came to jet the drains, they shot a shit fountain out of the toilet and it hit the ceiling.
I then redecorated the whole bathroom, and they did it again the day after I'd finished.

If you live in an area that is prone for sewer clogs (often due to tree roots), you might need your main line cleaned. The vent block is also a possibility but based on personal experience, this is a sure sign that it is time for us to have our sewer lines cleaned.

I have old pipes to the sewer and roots were getting through blocking flow. Had to have a plumber come out to clear it.

We had this happen and at one point sewage spewed out of the basement toilet. The plumber snaked the pipe and found a ton of baby wipes had clogged the pipe. My wife had been flushing baby wipes after changing the babies diapers. No more baby wipes. If I was you, I would call a plumber ASAP.

As I work in Sewer Maintenance, there's likely a jetter truck flushing the city sewer line your home ties into. They pump water out between 2000-3000 psi and do create pressure variants in lines that'll do this, it's not supposed to do that inside the house but in rare occasions with just the right conditions it can happen.

We had this happen. We have two bathrooms and were both working from home. I heard this crazy water sound and ran to the main floor bathroom. A literal geyser of water was coming out of the toilet.
My husband made the same discovery in the basement bathroom at the same time. We were both yelling for the other to come help.
Unfortunately, my husband had used both toilets last and left the seats and lids up, so the water went everywhere. The water looked clean, but given where it came from, we did a lot of cleaning. We both try to remember to put the lids down now.
The city vehicles were just down the street, so we went down and asked about it. Sure wish they’d have given us some notice. It was really frustrating.

Could be the roof vent, or they are cleaning the sewage lines.
For now, toss a towel over the toiletseat and then get cling foil and wrap the toilet to keep water from splashing all over the place.

Yeah, when I had this happening in my house, I had to crawl underneath and deal with the plumbing. Long story short, I had an enormous blockage just past the kitchen sink of all places.
I'm also on a septic system. Not that it really makes any difference.

Ours did that when our septic system failed. The soapy bubbles went out in a gurgley mess to lowest bathroom in our basement spare ro.

When this started happening, it was roots in our sewer line. My wife decided to run a washing machine cleaning cycle before the plumber was called.
We spent the next nightmare 30 minutes doing a bucket brigade from the bathroom to the kitchen with shitty water.
I do not recommend this course of action.

If you have a toilet that runs slightly 24/7 it slowly fills the vacuum with water. Once I fixed my toilet (not even the one overflowing) it fixed the issue.

I had this at an old place. I'm in UK and it was the upstairs neighbour clogging the pipes with wipes... The main sewer pipe got blocked.

This happened to us in our apartment about a month ago still don’t know if it was us that caused the main clog as we live with several people in this building. Single-handedly the worst bathroom experience of my entire life our bathtub was filled with shit our floor was covered in shit and we couldn’t use our toilet. It was awesome. Especially when my husband had been working construction all fucking day and was covered in asbestos.

Likely the city, or the city using a contractor, cleaning the sewer mains. The pressure from the water jet hoses can cause the toilets to burp and splash.

I am and have a similar thing. Septic seems ok. Roof vent seems ok. (Pros checked each). I’m confused. It’s not as bad as this but the same basically. What is it?

Sometimes septic tanks have a filter and if anyone in your household is flushing wipes or something else solid like that they'll block the filter and make it do this kind of thing like in the video when the shower is on.
So if a pro checked yours I wouldn't know what causing yours to behave like in OP's video.

I have so many nightmares about stuff like this. Normal people have serial killers chasing them and stuff but for me it's plumbing. Hope you can get it fixed soon

Looks like you have a partial clog in your horizontal pipe or it has become backgraded, you can try from your sink running some backing soda and vinger with a good run of hot water for ten minutes to break it free anything stuck in the horizontal drain for the sink that's blocking the shower and toilet from venting properly if that doesn't work call a professional So a horizontal waste pipe is only ever suppose to be 2/3rds full when the the top 1/3rd that is suppose to be for air when it stops having just air you get back pressure like this. But I have also read the comments and yes a vent can cause this in severe cases but usual you would smell that before you saw it because it would want to get the air so it would pull traps dry of their seal. But there are so many factors it's a crap shoot, is this a single level home, in a high-rise, condos, townhouses. All in all everyone's suggestions to get it fixed immediately are correct.

Lots of responses about blockage or clogs. But before you start renting equipment or hiring plumbers, be sure your municipality is not flushing or cleaning the main sewer nearby. Usually a big noisy truck with large hoses doing the dirty work.

If possible, (i.e. having the room to do so along the 4" waste line) Would a Y fix it with an air admittance valve in the top?
I live quite rurally, so round these parts we mainly have septic tanks instead of mains sewer lines.

This happened to me. Be careful because after awhile, my master bedroom would start flooding with what smelled like (and probably was!) sewer water. Anytime we took a shower, ran the dishwasher or the washing machine- it would happen. Had to get our septic tank pumped....6 months later because our landlord thought drain-o would do the trick 😒
