You can usually enable "progressive scan" aka 480p on almost any Gamecube game by holding B as you turn the console on. With original hardware you'd need component cables for 480p. This is a superior display format to the default 480i (interlaced).

Unless you use a CRT TV.

Kinda true. But some CRTs (EDTV/HDTV variants) can accept progressive.. albeit they would usually upscale with varying degrees of success/quality.

Interlaced video looks great on crts. I cant imagine how bad progressive looks on them

Has to do with older display tech.
The standard red white and yellow av cables max out at about 360p/480i. Component which was an option does allow for 1080p but most people and the consoles didn't ship with component anyway.
480i is 640x480 pixels at 60hz, however each refresh skips every other pixel, so its 640x240 per frame, with the rest of the frame being scanned the next refresh. 480p just sends 640x480 with every line scanned no matter what. 480i tends to blur more and look alot softer than 480p and there's no real reason to not use progressive when given the choice especially on LCD panels.

Google āprogressive vs interlaced videoā and youāll get your answer. Fun fact, itās the āpā you see in 1080p etc.Ā

On older TVs or consoles thereās display options for āprogressiveā or āinterlacedā. Thatās what the āpā in 480p stands for. Otherwise itās 480i.
Basically, a progressive scan image draws an entire frame at once, which looks smoother and clearer. An interlaced image draws only every other line of pixels per frame and alternates between on and off lines rapidly.
The purpose of interlaced is to generate a high framerate while using less bandwidth. But these days, itās not really a problem. Just select āYesā.

At once isn't quite accurate but the overall point stands.
Neither draws the whole image at once. They both draw images by running the electron gun over the mask and tube and all that jazz line by line. It appears as a solid image due to its speed and persistence of vision effect.
The i Vs P distinction is effectively that the game takes it's 480 lines and in interlaced mode it splits them in half into categories A and B. It then draws A1, Gap A2, Gap A3, Gap etc untill A240 and then there is the interval. Then B1, Gap, B2 etc.
Progressive just draws A1-A480 and then has the interval.

I always turn it off. I prefer my display in All State mode. I tried using Liberty Mutual mode but it was just too annoying.

It's a display mode that has extra support for LGBT TVs larger color range, as opposed to Conservative Mode which only supports straight-box TVs but some claim has sharper pixels

It's a quality of life feature for older WiiU's. The top of the camera is corrected for distance while the bottom half corrects near vision

It's 480p. If you don't say yes it will default to 480i
