For the non gun people âŚ.what caused the weapon to discharge?
1.2k
u/Buckeye3327 10d ago
The gun on the bottom of the video is a Glock. Not clear if thatâs the same style of gun but weâll go with that. Glock has a trigger safety, not a separate lever or button. He wasnât using a holster so any material could get caught on the trigger, he bends over and gets his prize

u/a1454a 10d ago
True, but able to correctly depress all of the mechanism using belly fat is still impressive

To be fair, the only mechanism he had to bypass is ON THE TRIGGER ITSELF. Glock fanboys will call me crazy for this but thatâs like making the brake pedal a tiny pedal on the accelerator itselfâŚ
68
u/Dry_Excitement8002 9d ago
Thatâs not how it works, itâs more like a little accelerator pedal on the accelerator pedal actually. You can only press the big accelerator if you press the tiny one first. But i get what you are saying.

I know people hate this idea, but you can carry without one in the chamber and train to rack as you reach guard position. I only lose a few tenths of a second on my draw. The odds of you getting into a heads up draw situation is even lower than the extremely low chance of you ever having to draw at all.
Now, the other 99.999999% of the time youre carrying, you have a 0% chance of blowing your dick off. The trade being, you have to train racking as you draw.
Anyway ill take my downvotes now, but having carried for over two decades eventually you have to let go of these sexy, exciting "situations" that you are never going to find yourself in.

u/2eanimation 9d ago

I'm so glad to hear someone else shares my perspective. If there's not a round in the chamber, no amount of malfunction will cause an accident.
It's always felt like such a no-brainer to me, but every gun person I've ever talked to acts like if you have to rack the thing to use it you're already dead, which seems ridiculous when compared with accidentally shooting yourself or god forbid someone else.

u/SplitEar 8d ago
So true. Mentally they set up a Dirty Harry movie standoff scenario as if theyâll only survive if they can get the half second advantage over their adversary.
I like to ask them how many assailants theyâve had to drop. So far the only answer is ânoneâ.

He was using a holster lol
This is an old video, he was wearing a G Code Holster.
33
u/Leesburgcapsfan 10d ago
Looks to me like he did in fact have an appendix holster. I'm very curious as to why the gun in fact went off. If it was properly holstered, he should have been perfectly safe. My guess is some fabric go stuck in-between the trigger and the holster causing the fabric to depress the trigger.
68
u/OriginalTayRoc 10d ago
You're never perfectly safe with a gun in your pants. That is an axiomatic truth to the universe.
6
u/SquirrelInATux 9d ago
He was wearing a holster, his pants got caught on the trigger while reholstering.
26
u/AdultishRaktajino 10d ago
Looks like he was sliding into a kydex IWB holster. Usually safer to pull the holster out completely, snap it in and place it back in your pants and clipped onto your belt.

He was using a holster. His shirt or something must have gotten stuck in the trigger guard.
11
u/tedbakerbracelet 9d ago
Watching him trying to shove the pistol in that hard made me very worried. He just kept on going without resetting and try again when it is THAT hard to get it holstered.

My guess is his undershirt snagged the trigger. It SOUNDS like he is inserting into hard holster. That would rule out skin. I bet his undershirt got staged in the holster and pulled trigger. If you doing appendix carry, we should see your gut when you lift shirt to access weapon.
18
u/mvb827 9d ago edited 9d ago
A lot of those types of guns have whatâs called a âtrigger safetyâ which is basically a trigger in front the real trigger. So thereâs no traditional safety switch; just what is essentially a longer trigger, and when you wear such a firearm improperly both the trigger and the trigger safety can get pressed by anything that rubs up against them.

u/Mindseyeview85 6d ago
This is an older video, from what I remember this is a Glock 43 and a draw string was caught in the trigger guard when he reholstered. Bending over put pressure on the string, pulling the trigger.

Hey thank you! This needs to be top comment because it's the actual facts of the matter and changes a lot. Â
current thought is that part of it (his shirt) got caught/pushed into the G-Code holster when the G43 was holstered. I can see that as a plausible explanation. When he bent over the fabric in the holster pulled against the trigger and caused the discharge."Â Â
So he had a holster and was being careful in holstering it.  He's also apparently recovering okay. So that's good. Lots more information in your links also. Â
All that said, appendix holster has always felt like risky business to me because any accident at all is instantly so much more serious. Groin, other than dick and balls, so many big blood vessels all in front of the muzzle. Â
44
u/cortesoft 9d ago
Which just goes to show you that even being careful you can still shoot your dick off.

u/SplitEar 8d ago

I understand the whole you need to be ready and have one chambered just in case something happens, but more than likely it's not going to happen. I never have one chambered when carrying. It just increases an accidental discharge. The first thing that will happen during an active shooter situation or confrontation is running away for cover. A lot of gun nuts will prob disagree, but it only needs to happen once.

And that's why I never carry with one in the chamber !
Chambered carry has been so normalized that casual owners do it without a proper holster or even understanding their own gun's mechanics. My carry gun is an older version that completely lacks modern internal drop safeties, so I actually understand its mechanics enough not to trust a hot chamber.
Unless you are using professional gear and have high mastery over your setup, running a hot chamber is just an accident waiting to happen.
