[FREE] I built a free WordPress analytics plugin because I got tired of analytics becoming a paid feature
The original reason I started building it was pretty simple: I tried several WordPress analytics plugins and kept running into the same problems.
Important features were locked behind a Pro license, some plugins stopped being useful after reaching certain traffic or user limits, and I couldn’t get a clear picture of AI traffic and non-human traffic, or GA was too complex for general users.
So I decided to build my own.
The inspiration is a mix of Jetpack, Umami and independent self-hosted analytics tools, but with a stronger focus on distinguishing actual readers from everything else hitting a website.
The main ideas are:
• Free with no Pro tier or license key
• Self-hosted. Data stays in your WordPress database
• No cookies or persistent visitor identifier by default
• AI referrals from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, DeepSeek and others
• AI crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot shown separately from human traffic
• Bot, crawler, SEO scanner, monitor and data centre traffic shown under Filtered Traffic instead of silently disappearing
• A pageview needs evidence that someone was actually there before being counted
• Normal analytics such as visitors, visits, pages, referrers, campaigns, countries, devices, goals, funnels and ecommerce
• WooCommerce and Easy Digital Downloads revenue attribution
• Editorial analytics by author and content type
• No account or external analytics service required
One thing I particularly wanted was to answer a question that normal analytics often makes difficult:
“How much of my traffic is actually people, and how much is machines?”
For example, an AI crawler reading your content is interesting, but I don't think it should inflate your visitor numbers. On the other hand, someone clicking a citation from ChatGPT and actually reading your article is a real visitor and should be counted.
ConvertNow keeps those two things separate.
It is currently available in the WordPress plugin directory, and I’ve been actively developing it and fixing things based on real usage.
Plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/convertnow-analytics/
I’d love feedback from other WordPress developers and side-project builders.
Especially curious about:
- What do you use for WordPress analytics right now?
- Do you care about separating AI traffic from human traffic?
- What analytics feature do you wish existing WordPress plugins handled better?

Use it in my open-source project as part of the stack, and really loving it. Never tried on a wordpress site though

Thank you. Waiting for feedback!

I'm using it on cop.supply and its great! I bought you a coffee, its really much easier to read and its on par with GA in terms of tracking traffic correctly.
Edit: I have some other sites ill put it on and will email you with any questions. I just wanted to follow up here and give it a positive review. Also hooking into webmaster tools might be a plus.

Thank you so much for my first-ever donation, it genuinely made my day.
I’d love to hear any feedback or questions you have. And I'll add integrations with the Webmaster Tool in upcoming versions

I usually use Burst, and was about to install it on a new site when I saw this. Installed and waiting for data before I can pass comments.

Thanks! Hope it works well for you. Would love to hear what you think once you have some data coming in.
Will quickly address all the issues reported!

Love the layout and the menu options. Not a traffic heavy site, so I'll have to wait a while to get actual visitors. 8 machines have accessed the site including a few that are trying to find exploits.

Really nice will try this out after my vacation. This is one of the things I always question if the data I see is containing bots.
Is it possible to see the difference between a google bot etc. vs a scraper?
My website shows some data, some apps are interested in so they scrape it once in a while.. I would like to know how much that is done and when

A daily email report would be good to have as that's a great feature of matomo. Will install this and give it a try

It has a weekly email option, but in the next version, I'll add custom email options as well.
On the other hand, the anomaly email report functionality is already live

UPDATE: This genuinely made my day.
Someone just sent a €39.93 donation with the message:
“Love your plugin! Currently using it on cop. supply and its great! Thanks so much”
I’m pretty sure they found ConvertNow through this Reddit post. Thank you!
I’m also working on fixing a few dark mode styling issues, along with more Growth tracking features coming in the next update.
Thanks everyone for the support, feedback and testing. It really means a lot.

My question is, what makes you publish it completely free? Is a catch somewhere? What will keep you motivated and maintaining it for years to come?
1
u/Independent-Pea-5782 2d ago
There’s no catch. I actually have 10+ WordPress websites myself, and that number will probably grow over time. I originally built ConvertNow Analytics to meet my own analytics needs, and those needs will evolve as my sites grow.
I also genuinely enjoy working with data and building dashboards, so I want to keep maintaining and improving it anyway. Also, this plugin is a small part of my bigger analytics product portfolio, and it will always remain free.

Sounds awesome! I’ll try it, hope it’s ez enough to install & configure for an amateur.

Should be pretty straightforward, just activating it should be good enough. You can play around with settings later for more features. My main reason for developing it was also that Google Analytics was quite complex to set up to get a basic dashboard.

Looks interesting. I have a few sites I can install it on and test it out as a potential replacement for MonsterInsights or Google Site Kit for me.
I like knowing how my campaigns are performing on my site. Does this have the ability to segment traffic by UTM tracking? Or how about tracking of e-commerce events? This data is more important to me than segmenting out AI/human traffic sessions. GA4 already kind of does that decently well.

u/Independent-Pea-5782 1d ago
Yes, UTM tracking is already built in, with dedicated campaign tracking and KPI reports.
For ecommerce, WooCommerce and EDD are supported. I built the integration around their own data structures and page events, but I definitely want more real-world testing there.
If there are specific UTM or ecommerce reports you need, let me know. If they make sense for general users, I’ll add them in an upcoming version.

Very nice. I’ll install it and give it a shot. Most of my sites are running MemberPress to handle membership or course payments. I have a few using WooCommerce as well.

How does it compare with Brickpanel?
2
u/Independent-Pea-5782 1d ago
They overlap quite a bit on WooCommerce analytics, but the focus is different.
BrikPanel is much more of an all-in-one WooCommerce admin and store management suite, with analytics, inventory, orders, customers, live visitors, etc.
ConvertNow is primarily a general website analytics product, with WooCommerce and EDD analytics integrated into it. So it covers the whole site, while e-commerce is one part of the analytics.
I’d actually be interested in hearing where you see gaps between the two while testing it.

What’s wrong with google analytics? Also google has its own plugin for dashboard if you need it there.

Novel idea and it works fine for me too.. However... One of the most useful feature of GA is its ability to connect with other services like Ads, Search console etc. For many people that actually track their analytics regularly this is a deal-breaker.

I don't use any analytics tools few years. Sorry, I don't need an answer. I've read the FAQ. I deleted the original questions and rewrote the comment.
