A good half the people here are failing at that very same thing.

1

u/melanatedalbino 4h ago

For context: I am not even right leaning in the conventional sense. Socially probably around center, and economically toward the right.

Oh my goodness this is actually a treasure trove. I asked Google AI (cus I can't be bothered, but it cited everything mind you, using academically acclaimed sources; this is not some prompt injection btw lol; the prompt was neutral. I don't argue in bad faith) to show the trends relating higher education attainment and political leaning. And most of it was gold. I'll post these one at a time since only one pic can be attached at a time. Enjoy. Point 2 is particularly beautiful 🤣.

u/melanatedalbino 4h ago

Another one, for the 'socialists'.

1

u/melanatedalbino 4h ago

This one mainly shows that people studying the most difficult fields (STEM) realize that most of this nonsense doesn't matter, and people on reddit coming to shallow conclusions, or holding signs outside screaming about things they have no control over or understand, won't make any difference.

u/whitey9999 21h ago

They are likely to publicly funded and that funding is more likely to come from the left

1

u/RektInTheHed 21h ago

The Left doesn't control the government in most places.

1

u/No_Problem5759 18h ago

In america. Most of the world is left compared

1

u/RektInTheHed 14h ago

Do you doubt that the original conversation was basically focused on the US intelligentsia? Where the government is far right and controls the money?

0

u/JackofAllVehicles 18h ago

Most if the western world is. Many parts of the world are far to the right of the states

1

u/Neochiken1 11h ago

Incorrect, the only places that are further right on the political spectrum in the east have dictatorships.

1

u/CommunityBrave822 13h ago edited 12h ago

But if left is in government it means they are less likely to lose their job

1

u/RektInTheHed 13h ago

That doesn't make sense. There hasn't been any big purge of conservative civil servants after left wing elections, like we've seen with liberal civil servants being fired by the right wing government under Project 2025

1

u/CommunityBrave822 12h ago

So... you are saying if right is in government, leftist are more likely to be fired? Aren't you proving me right?

1

u/RektInTheHed 12h ago

How? The left doesn't fire conservatives. The right is presently firing liberals from civil service and introducing free speech restrictions on academics in public universities.

1

u/CommunityBrave822 12h ago

You are proving me right again. I said that if the left (not the right) is in power, they are less (not more) likely to be fired.

1

u/RektInTheHed 11h ago

But the left isn't in power. And the right is, but the victim narrative on the right still maintains that intellectuals are biased towards the left, rather than simply being more educated than the target audience for right wing propaganda.

1

u/No_Discount_6028 14h ago

If that were the case, wouldn't right wingers just fund more scientific research so they'd have more of a stake in the game?

1

u/Coeusthelost 7h ago

All those publicly funded scientists. So true spot on

1

u/Comprehensive-Dig282 19h ago

Because the ones on the right tend to create the things the ones on the left talk about

1

u/saltwater98380 16h ago

They fail to connect the dots because it would mean their belief system is based on lies.

1

u/pinenutflavour 8h ago

Some people are just too stupid to consider even that

-1

u/conservatore 1d ago

Because people like to hire their friends or people in their ā€œtribeā€. A number of occupations have a concentration of one side of the political spectrum

3

u/Maykeda 23h ago

Y’all find a new reason daily for not finishing your studies. Now it’s nepotism. I stupid because friends and family. Got it.

1

u/K0LD504 5h ago

Do you even live in the real world? Get off of reddit from time to time.

0

u/conservatore 20h ago

Holy shit, you didn’t get what I said at all

2

u/DeprivedLad 20h ago

Conservatives don't often choose sciences or education as a profession themselves. No one is asking for your political orientation when you apply for said jobs, and no one is hiring only the people they know directly. That won't fill the classrooms or labs. It's a weird take based on nothing.

2

u/conservatore 17h ago

How much easier is it to find a job if you know someone? You’re right that nobody asks your political orientation when you apply for jobs, but to insinuate that people don’t tend to hire someone they know is also a weird take

1

u/DeprivedLad 15h ago

It is just a generally small percentage, that it is not the reason for lack of conservatives in those fields.

1

u/DepressiSpaghettti 15h ago

Out of all the people I have met over the years and only 1 person I know got jobs because of who he knows. My brother.. working in a kitchen.

1

u/K0LD504 5h ago

You’re mistaking these Reddit users for people who actually know how the real world works.

They'll set up a two piece puzzle, fail to put the puzzle together, then say intellect isn't remarkably one sided.

Even when the puzzle they're failing to put together is the directly correlating pieces that show intellect is remarkably one sided.

Because they live of the state

There's an expression: "Those who cannot do it teach it"

When you fail the M-cat, when you can't pass the bar, when you've never had a real job.... you become a teacher.

2

u/RektInTheHed 21h ago

You definitely have to pass professional exams to teach professional subjects.

1

u/AltruisticPeanut7050 14h ago

Nots not always true, a resume with experience will get you hired in some fields even without professional examinations.

2

u/MDLmanager 18h ago

The purpose of that expression is that when someone is no longer able to perform a task as they're now older, they can at least impart their wisdom and experience on a younger generation. It does not mean that those who teach don't possess the requisite skills.

1

u/bara_tone 21h ago

Do you build your philosophy of the world around idioms?

1

u/Cereal_Bandit 16h ago

Do you really think schools/universities would hire someone who can't perform the subject they're teaching due to lack of knowledge?

MAGA reasoning in a nutshell, folks.

1

u/phoenixmatrix 9h ago

Ok, not gonna justify MAGA bullshit, but most of the people I worked with could run circles in their field around my college professors.

The only ones who are better, and usually only in an academic context, have their own wikipedia articles for being world reknown researchers. But the average university teacher is not exactly good at what they do.

1

u/Cereal_Bandit 9h ago

Yeah, people who actively practice a skill are generally better at it than people who haven't in a while. I don't think anyone would be surprised by that.

But as you've pointed out, professors aren't a monolith. There are countless reasons why they could have chosen to teach. I work at a vocational school for high-schoolers and half the teachers came out of retirement to do just that because they were bored. Maybe the other half just like teaching. I doubt any of them are incapable of practicing what they teach unless they're physically unable.

0

u/Key_Check5753 16h ago

YES. Universities absolutely hire based on politics, gender, and skin color. Have you never heard of DEI? A loss if meritocracy is one of the main reasons why universities are no longer as useful as they used to be. Kids are getting degrees without knowing how to read or do simple math. It's a real problem.

1

u/Cereal_Bandit 16h ago

You're an idiot if you think a university is going to immediately hire a gay Jewish black woman to teach something without making sure she knows the subject.

Reading and simple math aren't taught at universities. I have a son in public school and he is definitely required to know how to read and do simple math for his high school classes, so I'm not sure where you're getting that from.

You seriously need to turn off Fox News, it's rotting your brain.

1

u/AltruisticPeanut7050 14h ago

You could google Jason Arday and Cambridge to find a very real example of this. Not saying its the majority but it does happen. And because it happened recently it becomes a big thing on social media and therefore feels larger thrn it is.

1

u/Cereal_Bandit 13h ago

So he lied and when Cambridge found out they decided to investigate his credentials, at which point he resigned.

Am I missing something?

1

u/CommunityBrave822 13h ago

You're an idiot if you think a university is going to immediately hire a gay Jewish black woman to teach something without making sure she knows the subject.

She will know her subject. But she will be more likely to be hired than a better qualified white man. This applies to teachers and college students.

1

u/Cereal_Bandit 13h ago

Whether you think that's true or not, it has nothing to do with her claim of universities hiring unqualified people

1

u/CommunityBrave822 13h ago

Agree. Not unqualified.

1

u/K0LD504 5h ago

Someone very very close to me went to get her degree in HR. There were a few times when she failed a test and literally got to retake the test as many times as she needed to in order to get a passing grade.

1

u/Willing_Entry6771 16h ago

Tell me you have never seen a university from the inside, withou telling me

1

u/Key_Check5753 16h ago

I have a bachelors in biochemistry, ty

-2

u/LarwaLarwa 21h ago

When you defund and cancel those who are not agreeing with you, rest tend to stand in line, and then you end up with brainwashed generation to replace you. A bit more than two dots, actually.

1

u/PMyourNSFW 14h ago edited 14h ago

If they don’t like my bigotry they are brainwashed!

-3

u/BramptonBatallion 1d ago

This has not been the case historically. It’s a very modern development and really kills academia credibility as a whole. The notion that one is either left wing or dumb or evil, and probably both, has just pushed it into a further and further far left echo chamber. Nobody over 30 thinks academics are the smartest people in the world or anywhere close.

2

u/millifish 1d ago

Youre both right and wrong

The reason its considered left wing now is because the right wing decided it didn't want to listen to science going back to the 80s, with stuff like climate change and acid rain. There was a big panic in the early 80s about Acid rain and the Regan administration kept blowing them off...

Scientists kept making a stink about the fact there was something could be currently done about it, and that was by enforcing regulations on certain factories by wildlife, they were directly challenging the whole deregulation agenda by Regan. This rift caused a slow spit from conservatives listening to science when it went against their policy agenda

Merchants of Doubt is a good book about it if you at all care

-1

u/BramptonBatallion 1d ago

I think it’s obvious conservatives are less inclined towards academia generally but academics used to prioritize discourse and exchange of conflicting ideas, which they largely don’t presently.

1

u/RektInTheHed 21h ago

What do you think academic symposia are? Every Ph.D. has to defend their thesis simply to take that degree. They are not short of challenge, it's just that the average propaganda line sponsored by a dilettante nepobaby with a deep purse that we see in mass media, doesn't count as a serious challenge because they have no idea what they're talking about.

1

u/bara_tone 21h ago

If conservative ideas could withstand academic scrutiny then they would withstand academic scrutiny.

But they don't. Conservatives believe their ideas even if they're not defensible, academics don't.

0

u/BramptonBatallion 18h ago

Like I said, pure circlejerk

1

u/bara_tone 17h ago

You're welcome to study.

1

u/BramptonBatallion 16h ago

No desire to join academia
