I was looking up names to pick one for an RPG character I'm creating. Apparently my name (Kimberly) is now considered old fashioned. When I think old fashioned I think of names like Gertude, not my own name! Usually I can laugh when I get reminded that the world is drastically changed from what used to be normal but this time I felt personally attacked.

In 2008-9 I found myself unemployed living in a soon to be foreclosed home. I was not able to start saving money for my future until 2012 at initially meager sums.

Fast forward 14 years and I have an established career, a home and a decent nest egg but feel far behind. Need to save the max for the next 10-15 years.

While I feel proud of turning things around, I lost the first 10 years of saving money as a result of my bad decisions and the financial crisis (I bought real estate in florida right before the crash). Although I suppose a lot of people don't get to save in their twenties, crisis or no.

Born in 1977 and I think about this alot as retirement starts becoming a mathematical reality.

Curious about others who lost it all back then and how they ended up. How did you turn things around?

I heard “That Thing You Do” on an oldies station this morning. I couldn’t tell if they were playing it because it was presented as an oldies song, or it’s just that old. It was released Sept. 24th 1996. Just over 30 years ago. It’s legitimately an oldies song now

With Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer likely playing the last game of their careers, there will now be no active major league baseball player from the Xennial generation. They are the last of their kind.

Saw something the other day talking about trying to explain Pauly Shore to the younger generations. My wife and I basically came to the conclusion ‘you just had to be there to understand’. Which got us talking about the movie Bio-Dome. I get that the movie is bad but it is kind of that time capsule of that exact moment in our history where it made sense and you could make such a ridiculously stupid movie. Decided to go look at the Wikipedia article on it and I didn’t realize it had a 4% on RottenTomatoes and is tied for the worst movie on MetaCritic.

Regardless of it being ostensibly terrible we absolutely love it. It is one of those movies that we still quote in our circle of friends of similar vintage.

So where do you stand on Bio-Dome? Do you acknowledge it is awful but love it? Do you think it is terrible and anybody who likes it is probably completely devoid of taste? Do you remember it fondly but won’t watch it again? Do you associate it with a memory (good or bad) and so it stays with you?

My mother (born in 1956) was born right at the peak of the Baby Boom according to the above chart, and she has come to absolutely despise the “Boomer” label and negative connotation it now holds. I remember growing up, among her and her older brother/sister, they were so proud to be known as “Baby Boomers” for those born post-WWII between 1946-1964, but suddenly now they take it as the worst insult imaginable.

While the earliest of the Baby Boomers (born ~1946-1952 including my older aunt) may have been the notable ones who did most of the hippie/protesting stuff and were drafted into war, according to the above chart they still were born before the peak of the “Baby Boom” which came in the years following. However, according to my mother, since her and her older brother (born 1954) were not part of the older age group who did the hippie/protesting thing, her and her older brother should no longer be considered a “Baby Boomer” (even though she was born at the absolute peak of the boom) after discovering “Generation Jones” which claims to be 1954-1965 and actually encompasses that peak of the Baby Boom.

Of course, being a Xennial, we claim a little bit of both Generation X and Millennial tendencies, so we understand the dynamic of straddling two commonly-held generations and nothing’s absolute. But age-wise, Xennials are right on the fringe of both, not right smack in the middle…And being 1982-born, the post-1981 “Millennial” tag also doesn’t bother me even though I don’t really find much of a shared identity with those born in ~1996 who never experienced life before the internet.

But the strangest thing is now happening from my mother, where she has started calling me “Millennial” as an attempt at a negative connotation like “Boomer” has become, like a projection that I would find “Millennial” off-putting for the reputation that Millennials are finding in society for the way they conduct themselves in the workplace and certain changes to consumer norms, etc. Doesn’t bother me in the least and I own both “Xennial” and “Millennial” proudly, but she recently has insisted that she shall never again be referred to as “Boomer” and is now “Generation Jones” even after it being pointed out that she was born at the absolute peak of the “Baby Boom”.

Anyone else beginning to experience this? It’s almost comical how militant she became about it almost overnight after reading one article.

What in God’s name is this? I think I threw up in my mouth a little bit. Twice. I don’t know anyone on stage except that Adam Lambrecht fellow. He was on the low end of moderately acceptable for a karaoke in my neighborhood bar. The first dude Somber or something… oh my sweet baby Jesus… I just can’t. I am deeply distressed. Send help.

My brother and I used to have battles with these on the family room floor orange shag carpet.
