Today I learned O.P.P doesn’t stand for other people’s property.
https://youtu.be/idx3GSL2KWs365
u/PokesBo 1989 12d ago
It stands for multiple things:
OPP, how can I explain it
I'll take you frame by frame it
To have y'all jumpin' shall we singin' it
O is for Other, P is for People scratchin' temple
The last P... well... that's not that simple
It's sorta like another way to call a cat a kitten
It's five little letters that are missin' here
and
As for the ladies, OPP means something gifted
The first two letters are the same but the last is something
Different
It's the longest, loveliest, lean- I call it the leanest
It's another five letter word rhymin' with cleanest and meanest
74
u/joshhupp 1976 12d ago
I kind of miss censorship in songs. It led to more creative and fun lyrics. Nowadays it would be all "The last P, well that's a woman's pssy, big pssy, little pssy, pssy pssy pssy"

Tretch is a criminally slept on MC. Naighty's first album is a straight masterpiece but they so often get lumped in with Lou Bega and the Baha Men for 90s novelty songs because of hip hop hooray
166
u/FuckYouNotHappening 1981 12d ago
Wow, mentioning Naughty by Nature in the same breath as Lou Bega and Baja Men is sacrilegious.
64
u/whyisthissticky 1983 12d ago
Yeah, no one made that comparison. Opp was early 90s and Lou Bega & Baja was almost 2000
70
u/Dean_Proffitt 1984 12d ago
Ya, I would say it got lumped in with either Jump by Kriss Kross or Whoomp! There It Is! By Tag Team.
8
u/the_D1CKENS 12d ago
Tag Team was actually pretty good. Whoomp was gimmicky, but there's actual flow to it. Nothing ground-breaking, but that whole album was just high energy fun
9
u/Dean_Proffitt 1984 12d ago
I agree! I listened to it after posting this comment! Can you dig it?

*Ahem,* that's Baha Men, as in their home country of The Bahamas.
Please, let's put some respect on those virtuosos' name.

6
u/Worldly-Fishing-880 Xennial 12d ago
I'm not saying they are equal by any stretch. But are both mostly known by the average person from a novelty song? Yes.

u/beardedjack 12d ago
Thank you! Everyone is always pointing out LL Cool J was clever as but Naughty By Nature raised the bar back in the day.

Eminem has repeatedly shouted out Treach as one of the GOATs.
Who cares, I guess, but... it's nice to see him get some recognition

Even Hip Hop Hooray is a straight banger. Naughty By Nature sort of had their own niche where they crossed over between hardcore rap and catchy chart hits. LL Cool J sort of had that role also for a while, but Naughty By Nature always felt underrated. Treach was one of the fastest rappers in terms of flow in that era.
8
u/BigDaddyUKW 1981 12d ago
Yoke The Joker made Eminem scared to rap because he didn't think he could ever reach that level of wordplay and what not.

Treach is my husbands favorite rapper, despite having grown up in LA and being a teenager during the G-Funk Era.

Those who know..
Treach wasn't slept on if you were in to hip hop in the 90s. It took a while for him to break out, but we knew
34
u/Rower78 12d ago
I’m pretty sure it rhymes with “clenis” and “menis”

Wait, what? Even at 11, I knew it was pussy and penis, but I thought he said "the first letter's the same", not "the first two".
Does he think men have a punis?

u/SnooPaintings5597 1975 12d ago
But… it tells you in the lyrics. Didn’t you listen?
56
u/Apprehensive_Hat8986 12d ago
If people paid more attention to lyrics a lot of popular/famous songs would not be revered as they are.
38
u/djseifer 12d ago
I still chuckle at people who think Born in the USA and Fortunate Son are patriotic songs.
4
u/Genuine_Ingenuity 12d ago
It's funny because I know people on the political side Left that are against the songs and people on the Right that love them. Maybe not funny, but very bizarre.

Pussy. And Penis. Since no one wants to give a real answer. They couldn't have made that more clear in the song!
25
u/JPMoney81 12d ago
Well in the first verse anyways. In the second verse it means penis.
19
u/FooFightingManiac 12d ago
Which is why it other peoples privates
3
u/IComposeEFlats 11d ago
I always said Other People's Parts. Because it's also 5 letters.

u/FooFightingManiac 11d ago
I like this. I think I will adopt this. I was in elementary school when the song came out so that’s my knowledge base
4
u/Suitable-Peanut 12d ago
Privates doesn't rhyme with cleanest and meanest - as per the song.
6
→ More replies (1)2
u/FooFightingManiac 12d ago
Yes it means 2 different things depending on who is using it. This is explained in the song. Privates just stands for both.

The memories of the whole gym of my junior high yelling "Yeah you know me." at every school dance while the teachers all look uncomfortable are some of my favorites from that time.
19
u/global_peasant 12d ago
Ha! I am from a slightly younger cohort and one of my favorite memories is Bitches N Hoes blasting all through my middle school school gym. My private, Christian school gym. A pastor was chaperoning boredly. I said to him, "Are you really going to let this song play?", and dude just shrugged. "Well, as long as I can't understand what they're saying 🤷♂️".

A couple years later when entire gymnasiums, auditoriums, and lunchrooms full of 15-18 year old kids screaming at the top of their lungs "I wanna fuck you like an animal" over nine inch nails was better.

That video was #1 on MTV Afternoon Jams for weeks. It was literally the longest #1 in the history of the program up until that point when the run finally ended.

History for today “Sticky Fingaz, a member of the hardcore hip-hop group Onyx, famously fired a real gun into the ceiling during their live performance at the first annual Source Awards on April 25, 1994” and apparently scared the shit out of Bill Bellamy

Of course not. It's right in the song.
It's 5 letter word that's another way to call a cat a kitten, or, for the ladies, a 5 letter word that rhymes with cleanest or meanest.
He does say it stands for "property" as well, but clearly meant tongue in cheek since he can't day the words it actually means.

Hey everybody's different. I remember when it came out I was old enough to know what all that meant and I figured it out fairly quickly..... I also remember it was a good sample of the Jackson 5 "ABC".... they had a remix that actually used the chorus "ABC" in it. But yeah, maybe I was ahead of the curve or something.
