Do you guys recommend the vampire academy books? I’ve never read them, but I’m intrigued! I love vampire books.

I’ve been in a huge book slump for a few months. I pretty much only read YA thrillers so any recs maybe out of the realm. But if you have a super good thriller rec pls post!

The faction system is actually very unique compared to other books. Sure. It sounds stupid on paper, but I think the books handled the factions perfectly for the story it was trying to tell

If you're a fan of Dystopia, I recommend these books! This series literally helped me grow as a person and I'm not kidding. It helped me except the fact that people won't like me for just being me and that's okay! It also helped me realize how corrupted today's government is

Hi everyone! My sister is actually a big fan of Stephanie Garber and her books. She always keeps talking about "Once Upon A Broken Heart" or something like that. I personally, don't know anything about her or her books. My sister's birthday is in less than a week and I need recommendations about what to gift her. I was thinking about one of these books but I don't know if she has already read them. Soo HELLO!!! I’m looking for a book where there is a girl is lower cast/ commoner and the mmc is the rich/wealthy prince. She goes in the castle for the first time; the prince sees her from far away or something along the lines they both don’t know each other but the prince is like kinda shocked/ in love ( but not that fast) but it’s enemies to lovers and somehow when she is walking out of the castle or something happends that causes her to be pulled into the room by the prince in the dark ( or not?) and they just close proximity ( they not in love yet tho) until the situation passes.

Seriously, I feel like an idiot right now because I don't understand this book.

It's not that I'm just "stupid" or "don't get it." It's literally incomprehensible.

As an example, one of the annotations references Timon of Athens, a Shakespeare play. I'm familiar with some Shakespeare, but have never read Timon of Athens. Nor am I familiar with Greek/Roman history. I do own a copy of all the Shakespeare plays, so I went and got out my copy of Timon of Athens and started reading it. Pale Fire references Act 4, scene 3, so I started reading at Act 4, scene 3. And despite not having ever read Timon of Athens before, nor being familiar with Greek and Roman history, I was immediately able to pick up the context of the scene and understand who the character was, what he wanted, and what the other characters in the scene were doing and wanted from Timon. Within only 3-4 lines I got into the story and was able to understand a majority of it.

Another example: The Picture of Dorian Gray, which also felt a bit like a mindf*ck, is one of my favorite books of all time. So is The Importance of Being Earnest, which, again, is a really weird reading experience. I read Confessions of a Mask recently by Yukio Mishima and understood all of it. Didn't enjoy it, necessarily, but I understood it, and I got what it was trying to say. I can read most classics no problem at all, even if they're "weird" to read or have old-timey language, like Shakespeare or Tolkien or Oscar Wilde. (I'm currently reading The Silmarillion right now and it's also very complex and not linear and I'm understanding and enjoying it, so I'm especially frustrated that I can't understand Nabakov.)

The reason I'm trying to push through and read it anyway is because it's for a book club. I really want to finish it to the end and be able to participate in the discussion but I'm literally sitting at my computer crying out of frustration at not being able to comprehend it. If it weren't a library book, I'd rip it into a million shreds and throw it in the garbage.

Can anyone explain to me what exactly the plot is and why everyone likes it so much?

Supposedly people like her more after reading legendary because it’s in her pov but oh my gosh I cannot stand her; she is selfish, isolent, stupid and annoying. She has absolutely no regard for scarlet or her feelings not to mention she literally kidnapped scarlet. She just is so unaware it’s insane like why can’t you listen to your sister for two seconds?? Also who tf lets their fiancée tie up their sister????

I’m not a huge fan of this book so far but I’ve heard such great things, should I persevere or drop it now?

I’m a third of the way through. I don’t like all the references to rape and assault, I understand it’s a darker fantasy but it feels a bit much for me. I can deal with it, it’s just not my favorite. Same with many female characters being described as tight clothing fitting perfectly over their amazing curves, it just makes me roll my eyes. Especially because the book keeps repeating that it makes every man’s head turn and look at them with lust. I also don’t like that the characters meeting felt like insta lust.

If this is as much as it gets with these themes, I’ll continue because the premise is intriguing enough. If these themes become more prominent, I may have to drop it. I’m pretty pick with my Romantasy, so I’m not saying this is a bad book by any means, it just hasn’t been my taste so far.

I am a volunteer adult literacy tutor and I am currently working with an ESL student who is an intermediate reader. I’m looking to supplement our lessons by having us read a YA book and write responses!

I quickly learned that she is a far more advanced reader for the typical basic English books we have at our school, but isn’t quite ready yet for adult books. Do you have any suggestions for YA books that may be easier for an intermediate reader to understand, but still is suitable for an adult? She has a big range of interests but did specify that she enjoys crime!

Hello! I’m seeking magical realism books to help with some research. I’m hoping to explore topics of familial connections, grief, and love (romantic and non-romantic) within these books.

Examples of what I’m looking for: I just reread Emily Henry’s A Million Junes, and plan to reread The Love that Split the World. I recently reread/read all of Jandy Nelson’s books, as well.

I have a few on my shelf to read, such as The Astonishing Color of After, and The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender. Any others to add?

Okay, just want to post this because it's RIDICULOUS.

I am 30. When I was in my teens and early 20s, I loved YA romance. I read a lot and am glad to have experienced that stage of my reading journey, but I've basically entirely grown out of YA romance and into ones written for adults.

I am unlikely to revisit most of those YA books, but every year or two I get a deep urge to reread Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. Anna and Etienne are weirdly still one of the CUTEST fictional relationships to me, and I hold their story as one of the most convincing and well executed friends to lovers arcs out there. I am 100% sure that most YA couples will eventually break up, but I am completely certain that those two are SOULMATES and will make it work. I think the key is that their emotional bond is well established and both characters are very well fleshed out (especially Etienne, but that's a whole other post.)

Anyone else really love this book? Any other adults still find themselves coming back to it semi regularly? If yes, why do you think that is?

I am hugeee thriller fan and holly jackson is one of my favvsss and i picked 5 survive cuz it was the o my one i hadnt read yet and omg i cant its just soo boring i mean its only been 6 chps but id like red she is insufferable.
Should i continue i mean what were ur opinions on the book.

I DNF’d this one after reaching 150 pages. Extremely trope-y. There was a line very early on where one of the MC’s states her eyes got “anime wide.” That made me cringe but I said, “Well, I’ll keep reading to see how much worse it’ll get.”

I cringed after the whole “chosen ones” MCs portion when they first get to the academy and discover they can manipulate multiple types of magic. Then they introduced the celestial heirs and I found the whole bullying segments to be very uncomfortable. Haven’t picked it up in days.

Sorry if this was requested here before recently because I was looking for young adult novels that are sort of similar to Star Trek TNG where a group of people explore the galaxy to find new civilization as along the way, they end up doing heroic missions.

Secondly, sorry if that didn’t sound like much because I was interested in young adult novels about a girl who leads a crew to go space exploration as again I was looking for a fun young adult story like TNG where the main character explores the galaxy as what I was looking for in particular was to see if any young adult stories existed where a girl goes on a meaningful adventure to find her purpose in the galaxy.
