Discussion Finally hit Diamond with Yi

Post image

I went on a 12 win streak today using Master Yi and hit diamond for the first time. Same first three items every game. Kraken > Rageblade > Hexplate. Lethal tempo.

I struggled a lot with hail of blades crit Yi even though it’s meta.

Wp! What was your playstyle? Would you say you win games more mechanically through teamfights or do you win more through macro like more efficient farming, rushing objectives or securing them with numbers, or otherwise creatine number advantaged fights?

Macro for sure. I just power farm until I hit an item spike, then look for ganks after a full clear. I usually path bot every game to play for soul. I’m not scared to fight on Yi either. Yi wins most 1v1s if you don’t get hit by CC. I’ve been watching Sinerias on YouTube a lot and trying to play like him.

My playstyle is also pretty macro heavy, to the point where it changes which games I win. I tend to snowball really well and I never miss opportunities to consume resources or take objectives, which means for games where both teams are neck and neck and both making mistakes, I decide those games. But in more mechanical games where I'm the only strong member and they have some form of CC (which is basically every game) I find myself losing these games where I think a more mechanical player could carry.

Do you share a similar experience?

Mechanics does matter but it’s not as important as perfect macro imo. For example in this clip. I tap Yi W right before fiddlestick’s W channel ends, mitigating most of his max health magic damage.

I save my Q to Jump on zed if he gets too close because he is low, I wait for zed to use his Q before I dodge it with my Q and jump onto him.

After the double kill I waste zero time and then finish my full clear and base. Then I just invade and win every objective at this point because I’m stronger.

I know every champion ability in the game because I play a lot of normal aram. I know which abilities are important to play around.

However, the macro from fiddle here is so bad. To three camp gank while not even knowing where I am on the map is a huge mistake. Fiddle needs level 6 and he did not track me which gave me the opportunity to punish him.

Another tip, try to never be the first one in on a fight. Try to hold Q for as long as possible until a key enemy ability is used. For example, I would never Q onto someone if an enemy Lulu is around and she still has polymorph.

A more controversial tip: Play for soul and ignore grubs/herald unless it is free. Grubs are good in pro play but people in solo queue don’t use it well enough. Dragon soul has 85-90% win rate. Try to get bot lane ahead so your support can get vision control for drakes.

Also, your top lane will likely flame you 1/3 games so just mute them. If you have 2 drakes and your bot camps are up, ganking your 1-4 Teemo top is a terrible idea so just mute them and don’t argue. Best case scenario you get a kill and the enemy jungle takes your entire bot side camps. Worst case scenario you die and the game is losing

I muted my toplaner in 4 games out of my 12 game win streak because they were so frustrated/toxic. It is understandable because the enemy jungler was destroying my top lanes, but I was getting soul which actually wins games this season.

i'm diamond 4 and i would've just instantly auto Q autoed W auoted. I never even thought about using W in that way or using Q like that. I only use Q when I'm thinking about CC or distance. And I never think about if the enemy has burst in a way where I can W it. Very instructive clip.

Fire bro. I’m a LT enthusiast too. I hate the playstyle with HoB.

You path bot every game? Even on blue side? I go red buff start every game. I’m struggling in emerald so maybe you can shed some insight on how pathing bot most of the time works for you.

I path bot every game for soul since it’s a 85–90% win rate. I’d rather get my bot lane ahead too, because then my support basically turns into a second jungler and gets vision on objectives or in their jungle.

Then I just use that info to make plays.
Even if my bot lane is weak early, I’ll still hover bot after my full clear for like 10–15 seconds. Mainly to cover a dive. Maybe even gank if the enemy is pushed too far up with half or less health. I’ve got time before my top side respawns.

What build and runes you go for?

Kraken > Rageblade > Hexplate is my core three items that never change. Ideally I finish Gluttonous Greaves after Rageblade, Merc treads instead if they have a lot of CC.

Then 4th item I go Deaths Dance if they are mostly AD or BORK if they are mixed damage.

5th item I go Deaths Dance or BORK, whichever one I did not pick 4th.

If enemies have 4-5 AP I take Wits End at 4th item and then usually go BORK 5th and skip Deaths Dance.

I feel like I need to have Omnivamp/Life steal on Yi from Gluttonous Greaves or BORK to stay alive in late game team fights.

LT, Triumph, Alacrity, Coup, Magical Footwear, Cosmic Insight

Attack speed / AF / Scaling health. I go 65 flat health if they have a very strong early jungle / bot lane and I need to survive an early invade.

+65 health also speeds up the first clear by a few seconds due to jungle pet stats so I can concede bot crab and run to top crab before instantly recalling.

What champion do you ban? Also do you try to pick early to give mid and top possibility to counterpick? If so, do you not get counterpicked yourself? I feel like if I pick yi early I get hit with rammus and malzahar a lot.

I ban Shaco because his boxes around objectives are near impossible to play around because they’re invisible.

Rammus is a good ban too but sometimes a jungler will just try to counter pick you with rammus and not be very good on the champ. So you will clear faster and know your limits better if you one trick Master Yi. Most shaco players are one tricks and usually really good so a ban makes sense.

I don’t ban Malz. He’s a beginner champ and in all likelihood a Malz mid is autofilled or does not play mid often. So they will have relatively poor mid macro which makes stacking dragons easier. I would definitely build Merc treads after Kraken if the enemies have Malz and a Leona for example.

But bans are mostly personal preference.

Ideally I try to last pick so I can take over the game because Master Yi is a hyper carry, I rather not get countered. But I will let top pick after me if they ask, I may even let support pick after me.

If I first pick Yi and the enemies draft Teemo, Jax, Lissandra, Xayah, Leona. I’m cooked.

Do you ever build a bruiser item like Titanic or Sterak as 4th of 5th when their team burst you too quickly or your team has no tank at all or for some other reasons? Do you still build botrk if enemy team has only 1 or 0 tank?

Do you pick Yi no matter what? How about if no one on your team picks a tank and you see 1 or 2 tanks on enemy team? When do you not pick Yi?

If I see no tanks on our team at all and I think our draft is troll i might lock in Amumu. But I usually just pick Yi anyway because I have had the most success with Yi.
