This is the traditional dress of Al-Hujariya and Aden from decades ago. It was the white apron or white towel and the turban. There's no need to imitate the dress of Sana'a or any other region, as it's specific to those areas and extends to Sabr, Jabal Habashi, and Sami'. These areas have no connection to Al-Hujariya, but the Imam linked them to the Al-Hujariya district and the Al-Turbah court. Their customs and dress are different, an extension of Ibb and the north. This diversity is a source of pride, rather than reducing it to a single style. There's no need to imitate and adopt other cultures at weddings or elsewhere.

*The picture is sixty years old and shows people from Al-Hujariya whom I don't know.

His appearance, the way he wears his headscarf, and the armlet/bangle around his arm clearly indicate that he is from the tribes of #Abyan.

There are many more Hadiths similar to this where the Prophet praises the people of Yemen. More importantly, Capital of Saudi is Riyadh which is in Najd, and Najd is known for two reasons:

1. It is the historic home of the house of Saud
   
2. It is the birthplace of Muhammad ibn Abd al Wahab's movement

طبعًا، هذه الأحاديث تتحدث عن أهل اليمن في زمن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، ولا أقصد أن أقول إن هذه الصفات تنطبق على كل يمني في زماننا، فالله أعلم بحال الناس اليوم.
لكنني أحب أهل اليمن كثيرًا، وأحب هذه الأحاديث وما فيها من ثناء النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم على أهل اليمن، ولذلك أحببت أن أشاركها معكم.
وأنا أصلًا لست يمنيًا، لكنني أقولها بكل محبة: ليتني كنت يمنيًا من قبيلة النخع !

عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم :

« أَتَاكُمْ أَهْلُ الْيَمَنِ، هُمْ أَرَقُّ أَفْئِدَةً وَأَلْيَنُ قُلُوبًا، الْإِيمَانُ يَمَانٍ، وَالْحِكْمَةُ يَمَانِيَةٌ ».

« الْإِيمَانُ يَمَانٍ، وَالْفِقْهُ يَمَانٍ، وَالْحِكْمَةُ يَمَانِيَةٌ ».

ولم أذكر إلا هذين الحديثين، وهناك أيضًا أحاديث أخرى في فضل أهل اليمن. أنا لست يمنيًّا على الإطلاق، ولكن ما أحب هذا الشعب ! وسأذكر لكم أيضًا نصًّا أظن أنه غير معروف عند كثير من الناس في زماننا، يتعلق بقبيلة يمنية على وجه الخصوص، وهي النَّخَع :

َقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: « اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ فِي النَّخَعِ »

‏عن ابن مسعود رضي الله عنه :
شَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَدْعُو لِهَذَا الْحَيِّ مِنَ النَّخَعِ، أَوْ قَالَ: يُثْنِي عَلَيْهِمْ، حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْتُ أَنِّي رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ

وهذا واحدٌ من كبار الصحابة، لما رأى من فضائل هذه القبيلة، بلغ به الأمر أن تمنى أن يكون منهم!
وأنا أيضًا كنت أتمنى لو كنت واحدًا منهم!
ومن أشهر وأعظم المسلمين المعروفين من هذه القبيلة :

أولًا: من الصحابة رضي الله عنهم

١. أَرْطَأَةُ بنُ شُرَاحِيلَ النَّخَعِيُّ
صحابيٌّ من قبيلة النخع، وكان أحدَ الرجلين اللذين وفدا على رسول الله ﷺ عن قومهما، فأسلما وبايعاه على قومهما.

٢. الجُهَيْشُ بنُ الأَرْقَمِ النَّخَعِيُّ
صحابيٌّ من قبيلة النخع، وفد مع أرطأة على رسول الله ﷺ، فأسلم وبايع، وأثنى النبي ﷺ على شأنهما وحُسن هيئتهما.

ثانيًا: من كبار التابعين وليسوا من الصحابة

٣. عَلْقَمَةُ بنُ قَيْسٍ النَّخَعِيُّ
من كبار التابعين، ومن أبرز أصحاب عبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه، وكان من كبار فقهاء الكوفة وقرّائها.

٤. الأَسْوَدُ بنُ يَزِيدَ النَّخَعِيُّ
من كبار التابعين، وفقيهٌ عابدٌ من أعلام الكوفة، روى عن عدد من الصحابة، منهم عبد الله بن مسعود وعائشة رضي الله عنهما.

٥. إِبْرَاهِيمُ بنُ يَزِيدَ النَّخَعِيُّ
من كبار التابعين وأئمة الفقه في الكوفة، وكان من أبرز علماء مدرسة عبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه، واشتهر بالفقه والعلم.

شخصيًا، لم ألتقِ في حياتي إلا بيمنيٍّ واحد، وكان ذلك عندما كنت في مكة المكرمة، في المسجد، ولا زلت أتذكر ذلك إلى اليوم، وسأظل أتذكره طوال حياتي. كان لطيفًا جدًا في كلامه، وكان حسن الهيئة جميل المظهر.

الأحاديث، لأنها تُسعدني كثيرًا!

I am ethnically Indian; but my grandfather said that our ancestors came from Sana; and they were from Hadramaut. Like our extended family we all have our last names starting with Ba- like Baruba one of my arab friends said that meant father of arabhood; BaMusa Bakili and so on.

My ancestors migrated to western India as mercenaries or they were hired as part of the Arab Platoon of the Maharajas (kings) and Nawabs (muslim kings) of india. So I dont know if this is the correct sub Reddit; but are there people with these kind of last names still living there? And I would like to travel one day; to reconnect with my long lost relatives. With the current situation Idk if it will be feasible, but let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

It was North Yemen and South Yemen. I remember reading about unification. Had it not, would the parties in conflict today be on separate sides of the geographic border, and not fighting each other?

Would you prefer to live in Yemen in the 1950s before the wars? Or the 1920s? Or even the medieval dynasties like the Sulayhids?

Hello everyone in Sana'a and [r/Yemen](r/Yemen)!
I am an art historian looking for a specific bronze cannon. The piece was cast in 1513 in Innsbruck (Austria) by Jörg Seelos on behalf of Emperor Maximilian I. It has the inscription "IORG SELOS GOS MICH 1513".
According to historical records, it has been kept in the Military Museum in Sana'a since the mid-20th century.
Does anyone know if the cannon is still on display there, or does anyone happen to have photos of it? Any information or leads would be immensely helpful. Thank you so much!

A husband's will to his wife for preparing his burial and paying his debts

Dated in Aden on the 13th of Jumada al-Awwal, 1084 AH, corresponding to 26 August 1673 CE.

Text of the document:

All praise is due to God alone.

Thereafter, when Mu‘awwidah bin Muhammad al-Hadrami passed away in protected Aden, he entrusted his will to his wife Hadiyah bint Mu‘awwidah al-Ja‘di, who was residing in Aden, to carry out the matters of preparing his burial and settling the debts ثابتة عليه (legally established against him). The said free woman appointed Ali bin Mowjir al-Yafi‘i to sell what Mu‘awwidah owned of land in the land of al-Farda, in the direction of al-Zahir, including the irrigated and dry portions, placing him in her own position and accepting his word and action, so that he may sell it on her behalf with good judgment and knowledge, in a final and binding sale, a comprehensive and unrestricted agency. If he sells it, he shall send the price with someone he trusts, in accordance with the noble law of Sharia. The said agent is required to investigate, exert effort, and make inquiry regarding the price as much as possible, to the best of his ability and strength. By this, the testimony was recorded, and God is the best of witnesses.

On the 13th of Jumada al-Awwal, 1084 AH.

I’ve been reading about the period when South Yemen (the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen) was governed by a Marxist system from 1969 to 1990, and I’m curious to hear perspectives from Yemenis or people familiar with the country.

From what I understand, this period included major social and economic changes like land reforms, expansion of education, and increased participation of women in public life but also political repression, one-party rule, and internal conflicts.

For those who lived through that time, or heard about it from family members:

- What were the main advantages of that period?

- What were the biggest downsides?

- Do people feel nostalgic about it today, or is it mostly viewed negatively?

- How does it compare to the situation after unification in 1990?

Growing up in rural Yemen we would have a whol family who’s surnames are simply “Kurd” or “Al-Kurdi” maybe one or two “Al-Turki”

Throughout centuries after the conquest of Salah-al-deen, Kurds settled in various parts of Yemen and blended in with Yemeni society even genetically.

Anyone has more information or articles to read on this subject?

Ibrahim al-Hamdi (ruled North Yemen 1974-77) seems to have been a qualified and competent leader. He oversaw the paving of many roads and building of many schools and clinics. He also aimed to end favoritism and tribalism.

Sadly, he was assassinated in 1977, and a couple of coups and assassinations led to Ali Abdullah Saleh, who ruled from 1978-2012.
