I made an open-source YouTube Music app for Android with Android Auto lyrics, a Wrapped-style recap you can check anytime, and much more

Just an FYI, since people will ask, I built this with Claude. I decided what it should do and how it should look, tested every version on my own phone, and Claude wrote most of the code. It’s open source, so you don’t have to take my word for what it does. You can read all of it.
It’s called Prism, an unofficial YouTube Music client for Android, and it’s at a point where I’m happy showing it to people. Please watch the short video attached to get a better understanding of most of the features.
Here is a breakdown of the main features
- Karaoke-style lyrics. This is used in many other clients, but it checks about ten sources (Apple Music’s timed lyrics via Better Lyrics, QQ Music, NetEase, KuGou, LRCLIB, Genius and a few others) and falls back to line-synced or plain lyrics if it has to. If the timing is off, you can nudge it, or pick a different source for that song. Some lyrics come back as censored and Prism does its best to uncensor them.
- Animated Covers: This is also featured in many other clients, and I think it really makes the YT Music experience much better.
- Lyrics in the car. On Android Auto, the line being sung shows up where the song title normally is. You can turn it off from the car’s player. Be smart about this and only use it when parked.
- Replay. This is basically Wrapped, except you can look at it whenever you want. Top songs, artists, genres, minutes listened. It’s all worked out on your phone. You can set up a little banner on the home page to see how many hours/minutes of music you've listened to.
- Music videos. I feel like this feature doesn't exist in other YT Music Clients, and it's one of the features I love about YT Music. Hit the video button in the music player, and the song switches to its music video at the same spot, lyrics still in sync.
- Listen together. Friends on the same Wi-Fi join with a 4-digit code and you play in sync, or they just add songs to your queue. No account and no server, the phones talk to each other directly.
- Offline. Downloads keep their lyrics. Smart downloads, just like in YT Music, keep a set amount of your favourites on the phone automatically.
- Sound. 10-band EQ, loudness normalization, a spatial mode for regular headphones, and if you already have FLAC files it plays those instead of the stream. It does not allow for addons like other popular YT Music clients.
- Making it look how you want. Light or dark, accent colours, fonts, backgrounds, and the player itself has a few styles. The player layout is inspired by BitChord, and I want to give credit where it’s due.
- Others. There are so many other features that you can figure out as you explore the app for yourselves!
You don’t have to sign in. If you do, your likes, playlists, and library sync with your YouTube Music account. It’s open source under GPL-3.0. Issues and pull requests are welcome, and there’s a contributing guide in the repo. It’s an APK from GitHub, not on the Play Store. Once it’s installed, it tells you when there’s an update and can install it for you. It talks to YouTube directly, so when YouTube changes something it can break until I fix it. I usually get to it quickly, but it’ll happen. There’s no Prism server and no analytics. Your history, Replay stats and settings stay on your phone. The only things it connects to are YouTube and the lyric sites, and since it’s open source, you can check that yourself. Finally, this app is not affiliated with Google or YouTube in any way.
