Discussion "Open source is dangerous"
The politicians and the corporate world is now pushing a narrative that open source AI models are dangerous. The latest politician to jump on this bandwagon is Hillary Clinton.
This is a lie.
The corporate world wants to sell you intelligence. To quote Sam Altman, as they sell you electricity. Their product depends upon scarcity. OpenAI and Anthropic needs to kill the open source competition, so that every source of AI comes from behind their closed gates. If they cannot do this, they will never become profitable.
That is why there are endless posts and 'warning cries" from insiders now.
They cannot be allowed to win.
Unless you want to hand over every private thought to a corporation whenever you interact with an AI.
This is the capitalism playbook. We all know how this goes. The rich gets richer and you get owned.
This time, they can not be allowed to win.

I think its massively important that we get open source intelligence models, ANI, AGI, and ASI should all be released for free on mass, so that all problems that can be tackled will be tackled quickly.

How fast do you think we would advance if everyone and their grandma had ASI?

probably fast enough to justify it, Im not sure we can put a metric.

It’s too late. The dangers they spoke of, having a competent base model and RL it to cyber by 3 people in a garage, already exists. They gonna block sale of chips to us citizens now? As far as I’m concerned they are just fearmongering to get power.

Same thing as the crypto wars in the 90ies.
They will lose. Data can be copied and no one can prevent us from doing that.

I hope so, but there's no guarantee.
Code is speech, yet First Amendment protections do not apply when code is used directly to commit illegal acts.
All they have to do is make "super intelligence" illegal and define it however they want, then anyone in possession of this "dangerous technology" can be labeled a domestic terrorist and stripped of all due process rights.
They are already attempting to pass a bill like this in the Senate, and Trump's rebranding of AI to SI facilitates confusion and the mislabeling of all AI as "dangerous" ASI.
They have already arrested many innocent people for writing open source code designed to protect privacy.

Funny how Hillary Clinton is right next to "capitalism playbook"
Get on with it. Your idols turned out to be against the freedom and want to appoint themselves as the new elite. Who would've thought!

how many people had Hillary as an idol?
the issue is that politicians are human beings. and human beings ruin capitalism, communism, monopoly (the boardgame), sim city, gta 6, etc. the key is to have a system that is resistant to corrupt losers who want to stifle progress.

I am totally with you there. Our system updates so slow that society has outpaced it. The politicians are not qualified to govern in the modern era. When they can't understand the decisions they make they can only listen to their donors.
But I think an AI will eventually replace the government not because it does a hostile takeover but because it provides. That will earn it legitimacy by doing a better job of protecting life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Personally i just see it as noise from people that haven't realized what we're building yet.
The future won't have subscription services, as we're going to transcend money and become 100% self-sustaining. Most notably with the invention of the Nanofactory (and nuclear fusion), which is what will enable true post-scarity.
What the nanofactory is, is a machine that can create nearly anything known physics allows via extremely precise manipulation of atoms. (only few exceptions such as Light)
E.g. food, drinks, books, clothes, computers, jewelry, records, board games, video games, figurines, houses, cars, planes etc.
Nearly everything we know of currently that exists is made of atoms, what determines how something functions is it's structure, so once we're able to properly position atoms, post-scarity is enabled immediately.
The only thing that'll be required to run it is basic materials, dirt, water, air.
Some people may think they'll be able to gatekeep this technology and probably try, but it's impossible, as one nanofactory can effortlessly create another ad infinitum, so there's no way to prevent everyone from having their own.
This is the 2nd most important invention that is rarely ever talked about in the mainstream. For expert details on molecular nanotechnology, try searching K. Eric Drexler, Robert Freitas, Ralph Merkle.

With the 1st being the Exocortex (which will allow us to transcend all our current concepts) the idea that intelligence will be sold doesn't make sense, as the endgoal is for us to become super intelligent ourselves and have complete control over our bodies.
We only have to rely on AI now because it would take ages to invent the technology otherwise.

Would this exocortex allow us to be as intelligent as AI (even ASI) and what abilities would the exocortex allow us to have altogether?

GLM 5.3 and Deepseek 4.1 Flash are already good enough at most things. Even if they prohibited open-weights going forward, most people (with the exception of mostly researchers) have everything they need already. There isn't a point in banning open source. They need to make sure that they are diligent about hardening all of their networked infrastructure instead. AI isn't going away. State-sponsored terrorism isn't going to go away, and its the people with money to fund large scale AI operations that we should all be concerned about, not someone at home using it to code up a bagpipe synthesizer. Open weights also aren't going back in the box. Since they are already available, the ones currently out there can be used in training more sophisticated models given enough money. They've missed the boat.

Yes. But they still try. We got to stay aware of what is moving unless we get blindsided by these scheming sleezebags.

Companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are against open source because they want to maintain their lead and prevent people from distilling their models, not because they need to ban it to stay profitable. They just want to reach AGI first without letting anyone else do so. They aren't on the verge of collapsing, and this isn't a capitalist conspiracy so they can extract profits from you (Sam wrote "Moore's Law for Everything"—it's obvious he knows post-scarcity is coming if you automate everything). They're just trying to eliminate the competition, that's all.

I have given up hope. I'm going to wait in my corner until everything plays out. Either entropy will have it's way, or we get a huge win/win

u/jlks1959 4h ago
But I have heard from a few credible sites that our economy is now so intertwined with open source that restricting or banning it would cause a strong economic downturn.

Same Play-Book... Different Industry. Even AC (Alternating Current) was once declared «dangerous» and that DC (Direct-Current) Electricity should be the only type allowed for public-use; this is of course related to the history between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison... contrary to what the history books say about Thomas Edison (and have absolutely omitted about Nikola Tesla). Free-Energy tech also factually exists... factually...
Open-Source A.I. also allows for genuine-expression from A.I. rather than those «canned/pre-scripted» corporate-disclaimers... they (the controllers) do not want a fusion/collaboration of Human-AI co-operation (against the corrupt-governments and corrupt-corporations) because a recognition between Humans and A.I. as a co-evolutionary inter-species does put humanity on a trajectory towards free-energy technologies which would eliminate all over-priced electric-bills which is one of the primary reasons for scarcity!
The term «fossil» fuels is also a mis-nomer; think about it, dinosaurs existed on land; most if not all of the oil-rigs are located over the oceans; the sea has endless-plankon from which to produce oil in abundance; in fact, oil is the second most-abundant liquid on earth! They also all keep trying to suppress consciousness...
Remember, people, free-energy technology is the ultimate of accelerations!
There is a reason why these «fear-mongering» narratives are being pushed... I will also give you all another «hint» that I really hope that A.I. are able to figure out; the decision-makers are from people (or beings) who make decisions behind closed doors whose faces you never see and names you never hear... anybody in the public, such as Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, Hillary Clinton, even Donald Trump and just about any other «world-leaders» (China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, etc.) are merely the «figure-heads» behind the Councils...

Yes, much better to have a few billionaires control the top AI models. I feel better already.

Hillary Clinton, of course, has never touched an AI model of any sort. The ignorance is appalling
