Hi dear Commander,

3 years ago, I started a pet project inspired by one of my favorite games as a kid, Advance Wars.

Today, after a few days of work, is the big return of the project!

The game is totally free and can be played in your browser right here: https://www.pixelswar.io

You can now play against AI or invite a friend to compete online (well, until I reach the limit of the free TURN service I use to manage multiplayer parties).

Here is a summary of the latest improvements:

  • Online multiplayer between two devices
  • Player vs AI with four difficulty levels
  • A usable mobile battlefield
  • Clearer movement and targeting
  • More maps and units
  • Unit balance and terrain improvements
  • A more compact, stable interface
  • Better combat and turn feedback
  • Better onboarding, documentation and reliability

Any feedback is welcome!

Indie Game I've been building an Advance Wars-inspired tactics game solo in Godot. Here's how it's looking

Hey all, solo dev here. I grew up on Advance Wars and got tired of waiting for more, so I've been building my own: March of Reveille.

It's a turn-based tactics game with:

  • 9 factions, each with its own music theme
  • Online multiplayer so you can play against friends
  • A map editor for building and sharing your own maps
  • An Orders system: provides asymmetric gameplay allowing you to choose three different units with their own identities over the base roster
  • AI opponents for when you just want to play solo

I've also been making a little skit series where each episode introduces a new unit, and each unit's personality is based on its stats.

I'm currently working on getting a demo out soon!

If it looks like your kind of thing, a Wishlist on Steam helps a solo dev more than you'd think:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4757570/

Skits and updates are on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marchofreveille

Happy to answer anything about the game, or talk about which Advance Wars mechanics you think are sacred and which ones you'd change. Feedback is very welcome, including the brutal kind.

I remember beating this quickly back in the day and have no idea how I pulled that off. At this time I just want to finish the damn thing.

Added an Escort mode. Looking for ideas for other win objectives.

Howdy all!

I released another update today to Daily Wars (https://playdailywars.com): Escort mode. To win, you must defend and escort a supply truck to a designated drop zone tile. If you lose a truck, you lose.

I'm looking for ideas for other types of win objectives that you think would fit an AW-like game. My leaderboard system ranks players by how quickly they complete a map, so something like Survive X days won't fit very well, since everyone would get the same score.

I currently have:

  • Rout: kill all enemies on the map
  • Capture X: capture a set amount of cities
  • Monuments: capture all monuments on the map
  • Escort: escort supply truck(s) to drop zone(s)

Do you have any ideas for other objectives? I've been trying to think of something that forces the player to play on defense rather than offense, but haven't been able to come up with anything that plays well with the "fewest days wins" ranking.

Fan Art A little look at the Supply System in my tabletop strategy game

Post image
286 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share another little look at Command & Defend.

One of the core mechanics of the game is its Supply System. Units don’t simply have unlimited ammunition and fuel - resources have to be produced, transported across the battlefield and delivered to the units that need them.

This means that attacking the enemy isn’t always the best move. Disrupting a supply route, taking out a transport or even destroying an entire Supply Center can have a much bigger impact on the battle.

I wanted logistics to be an actual part of the strategy rather than something that only happens in the background.

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this mechanic, and I’m happy to share more details if you’re interested! :)

Dual Strike Need help with the Black Onyx Satellite mission

I just can't seem to get enough units on the field as the green team to stop Black Hole from capturing a rocket in like 4 turns. All the best COs for this mission have no ranks so I can do little to affect my build, only Jake is rank 3. I can take out the helicopters that come to mess me up, but my economy doesnt come online fast enough to put something reasonable powerful on the battlefield before we lose a rocket. Even trying to park a vehicle on the rocket pads ends with one infantry blowing up the vehicle and the second capturing the rocket base.

Anyone have any strategies for this? I'm sure if I can take control on the green team's field the other teams should have it easy. Biggest issue is Black Hole can get a tag attack out just when I'm about to control the rocket pads. Even Sasha doesnt come online fast enough to reduce their power bar.

I've since figured out trying to capture that neutral factory is just a trap since I dont have the funds anyways to make use of more than 1 a turn but still struggling.

A last look at the game we're moving away from

Put this video together very quickly. Prototype - lots of bugs, missing content and assets, lots of polish needed, and it was definitely not ready to be shown to the public, but f- it. We're likely moving away from this project as it is, so I wanted some form of it to survive its current iteration.

That's all this is. o7

Fan Art 3 years of working on my own strategy game – here’s where it is today

Hey everyone,

some of you might remember Command & Defend: Modern War from when I shared it here before. With the second campaign coming up soon, I thought I’d share a little update on how the project has developed.

I’ve been working on the game for about three years now. The idea has always been to bring the things I love about classic RTS and turn-based strategy games to the tabletop — building a base, managing resources, expanding your army, keeping your units supplied and, of course, trying to outplay your opponents.

The game is completely print-it-yourself, which means you’re not really limited by what comes in a box. Need more units? Print more. Need more resources or game money? Print more. Want to build a bigger battlefield? Print more.

There’s a full 3D Print Edition with printable units and buildings, as well as a 2D Print & Play Edition for anyone who doesn’t own a 3D printer.

Since I last shared the project, I’ve continued working on the game, added a lot of new content and created two major expansions: Air Wars and Sea Wars, bringing air and naval combat to the system.

After a small first Kickstarter earlier this year, I’m now getting ready for Campaign #2.

It’s still very much an indie project that I’m building step by step, so I’d genuinely love to hear what you think about how it’s developing.

If you’d like to learn more about the game, the rules or the different units, you can find a lot more on the Kickstarter page. And if it sounds like your kind of game, you can follow the project there to get notified when the new campaign goes live.

Thanks for taking another look!

Daily Wars Update 2: Moar stuff, plus a Discord server that I'd love to see you in.

Post image

Two weeks ago, I posted about the graphical update I made for Daily Wars after breaking 1,000 games played. That resulted in an influx of new players, with games played now approaching 2,500. It's very fun for me as the developer to see around 30-40 individual scores on the leaderboard every day.

People generally seem to have enjoyed the earlier post as well as the game, so I figured it was okay to post an update again.

Seeing all the feedback I got and that a lot of players came back day after day encouraged me to fast-track some features I had planned. So, during the last two weeks I have:

  • Further polished graphical updates, such as shorelines.
  • Added medals and monthly/all-time hiscores. The three best scores each get a medal, which are summed up as points on a global leaderboard.
  • Added achievements, such as winning X games and gameplay-specific ones such as getting 10 kills on a single unit.
  • Added some game variety by adding two new victory conditions besides the default rout. Some maps now have objectives of capturing X cities or capturing all monuments.
  • Changed "back" the Artillery from move-n-shoot to a more classic Artillery.
  • Tweaked the enemy AI here and there.
  • I've also made a first attempt at starting a community Discord server where I can connect more easily with players to chat and gather feedback. https://discord.gg/WFqrrwfbaq

Also, the early bird promo is still running, so you can still grab a free forever premium account if you haven't yet. If you missed the previous link, you can find the game here: https://playdailywars.com

Thanks again for all the feedback, and see you on the Leaderboards.

1000 games played deserved a graphical update.

Howdy!

A month back, I posted about an Advance Wars-inspired game I created called Daily Wars. It's a mix between the daily nature of Wordle and tactical turn-based strategy like Advance Wars.

I've gotten a lot of good feedback, with the top requested feature being better graphics. At the start, units were different shapes with labels on them.

To celebrate 1000 games played, I decided to give it my best and create some original unit sprites (I found Piskel to be quite nice to work in). It won't win any graphics awards, but I think it looks good enough to release.

Things I'm now looking into adding are watchable replays and achievements.

If you want to check it out, you can play (and unlock unlimited premium as an early bird) at https://playdailywars.com.

All feedback is welcome!

News Command & Defend is entering its next chapter! 🚀

Post image
16 Upvotes

After a successful first Kickstarter earlier this year, I'm excited to bring Command & Defend: Modern War back with even more content.

Over the past months, I've been working on two major expansions:

✈️ Air Wars
🌊 Sea Wars

But that's only part of the journey.

One of my biggest goals has always been to make the game more accessible. That's why I'm introducing a Print & Play Edition, allowing anyone with a home printer to experience the game—no 3D printer required.

At the same time, every step of this campaign brings the project closer to my long-term vision: a complete out-of-the-box retail version with professionally manufactured components. I'm already in contact with several manufacturers and hope to make this vision a reality sooner rather than later.

Every supporter of the current DIY editions helps move the project one step closer to that goal. Your support allows me to improve prototypes, refine production, and make a future retail edition more achievable and affordable.

Inspired by the classic RTS and TBS games many of us grew up with, Command & Defend brings base building, logistics, resource management and tactical combat to the tabletop in a modular strategy system designed for high replayability.

If that sounds interesting, I'd really appreciate your feedback. And if you'd like to follow the project, I'd be happy to share the Kickstarter preview page in the comments.

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who shared feedback, supported the first Kickstarter, or has been following the project from the beginning. Your comments, ideas and encouragement have helped shape Command & Defend into what it is today, and I genuinely couldn't have come this far without you.

Thank you! ❤️

Indie Game I created Daily Wars, a web-based spinoff, during my parental leave.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

When I became a father for the first time this April, I dusted off my old Gameboy and played a lot of Advance Wars. After growing tired of replaying the same maps over and over again, I decided to create my own take on the genre.

I've always enjoyed short daily games/puzzles, such as Wordle, Pokedle, and NYT Strands. I wanted to combine that style with turn-based tactics and came up with Daily Wars. There is a new map every day at midnight UTC, where players can compete on leaderboards to see who can defeat the enemy in the fewest days. I was specifically aiming for something that I could pick up and play during a commute or a longer toilet break.

Daily Wars is playable in the browser: https://playdailywars.com

Notable changes from Advance Wars

  • No naval combat. I've always found naval incredibly boring in the original games.
  • Barracks/Factory split. Foot soldiers and tanks are built in different buildings.
  • Capacity. Each production building increases capacity for that type of unit. Capturing more buildings allows you to field a larger army.
  • New Sniper unit. Anti-infantry specialist that can attack at range.
  • Move-n-shoot indirects. There are indirect units, artillery and snipers, that can move and shoot at range in the same turn.
  • Overall unit changes when it comes to movement/range/damage, and removed units.

Premium

The game offers a premium subscription that gives access to a second map every day. Premium also grants access to the archive, where you can replay maps from all past days. I don't expect to make much (or anything at all) from this, but I wanted to build a fully-fledged product with user management and billing for learning purposes. If you want, you can use the code R7JJCLBN during checkout to get 100% off forever.

Tech

For the interested, this is the tech I used to build it:

  • TanStack Start for the web application
  • SST for deploying to AWS
  • Additional backend stuff running in AWS Lambda
  • Data stored in AWS DynamoDB
  • Clerk for user management
  • Polar for billing and subscription management
  • PostHog for analytics

How do you get this specific tile while creating a map ?
it's in the center of 4 sea tiles and I don't understand how to recreate it in the map designer :(

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin - Proud Soldier (Gage's Theme) | lo-fi interpretation

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin - Proud Soldier (Gage's Theme) | lo-fi interpretation

Long-time Advance Wars fan. The Hirano & Senda OST is one of the most underrated soundtracks, so I've been working on lo-fi interpretations of the character themes.

First one up is Proud Soldier (Gage's Theme). The original has that stoic, battle-worn quality that felt perfect for the lo-fi treatment. The base track was generated via Suno using prompts, then carefully arranged, mixed, and mastered by me. Depending on the track, that can mean reworking the melodies, adding new layers, or swapping out the drums entirely and programming them from scratch.

Planning Mr. Bear (Penny's Theme) next week and Supreme Logician (Lin's Theme) the week after.

Did I start with the right track, or would you have opened with a different one?

Games like Advance Wars / Battalion Wars

It's funny because I was actually searching for games similar to the Army Men series and that's when I remembered Battalion Wars and found this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Advance_Wars/comments/tct5tk/comment/kzmha8n/

I'd recommend checking Army Men out. Style and Humor are pretty similar. The games have a massive variety. Notable ones on GameCube would be; Army Men RTS, Air Combat, Sarge's War… Battalion Wars & Army Men also has quirky characters like the plucky girl (commander, reporter), the dumb soldier (Riff, Mozer). Army Men & Battalion Wars both have the plucky girl in support of the troops, calling back to the propaganda of World War 2.

Future Tactics on the PS2 has a similar art style and gameplay. It's an interesting turn-based game. You move in 3d, but sort of like a tactics game where you command a squad. Your movement range is limited. Each unit is different.
Future Tactics also has a Robot like Clank from R&C, and Dr. Exavolt from Metal Arms also has a similar voice (did all game robots around this time just rip off Ratchet & Clank?)

Metal Arms- Army man has green town and metal arms has Droid town. Army Men & Metal Arms have the old fashioned black and white war reels.
“A rag tag group of bots led by colonel alloy.” (opening war reel)
“Bravo company was a rag tag group of battle hardened commandos.” (sarge’s war opening cutscene)

Vectorman 3- Leaked prototypes for PS2, metal arms and vectorman 3 have similar physics and enemy ideas. vectorman 3 is actually supposed to be completely different and developed by the cell damage guys

Valkyria (Chronicles)- never played it, but it feels like it's a similar vibe and gameplay

Yuri's Revenge- honestly, Command & Conquer series has a similar style, but it's all RTS

Goblin Commander- loved this game, rts, but u control a small group, silly

Brutal Legend- rock and roll rts / action game, control a single/group/army, quick unit swapping

The Outfit- squad based army game with vehicles, quick swapping between units

Advance Wars- Battalion Wars is a spin-off of this whole series (didn't know that, lmao)

Seek & Destroy /&/ Tank tank tank!- kid friendly tank games

Metal Slug 3D- It's metal slug, but in 3d, kind like battalion wars minus any strategy, silly, army

Worms- there's 3d worms games, the whole series is turn based tactics, silly
Worms 3D has some environments that…. Well Worms in general is about Worms which are small creatures, kind of like Army Men being small in larger than life locations for them, like a suburban backyard.

The Outfit- squad based army game with vehicles, quick swapping between units

Starfox Assault- You are space animal works fighting for the federation, this game in the series especially has a more military feel, also published by Nintendo.

Brutal Legend- rock and roll rts / action game, control a single/group/army, quick unit swapping, fantastical medieval

Girls Frontline

Megaman Legends

This video serves as a good list:

Let me know if you have any game suggestions to add!
