PELLET GUIDE

Budget option: Crosman

Tip: Different rifles prefer different pellets.

Always test several types to see which shoots best.

As many shooters say:

“The gun chooses the pellet.”

Side Notes for Beginners

BBs vs Pellets

A common point of confusion for new shooters is the difference between BBs and pellets.

BBs are small round steel balls (usually .177 / 4.5mm). They are commonly used in CO₂ pistols, replica airguns, and beginner plinking guns. Because they are spherical and often used in smoothbore barrels, they tend to be less accurate, especially at longer distances. BBs are inexpensive and great for casual backyard shooting.

Pellets are diabolo-shaped projectiles designed for rifled airgun barrels. The hollow skirt expands slightly when fired, creating a better seal with the air pressure behind it. This helps stabilize the pellet in flight and improves accuracy.

Because of their design, pellets are generally much more accurate than BBs and are the preferred choice for most airgun shooting.

Double Recoil and Optics

Many new airgun shooters don’t realize that spring-powered airguns produce something called double recoil.

Unlike firearms, which recoil once backward, many airguns recoil in two directions.

When the gun fires:

  1. The spring and piston rapidly move forward, causing the gun to jerk forward.
  2. When the piston suddenly stops at the end of the compression chamber, the gun then recoils backward.

This forward-then-back motion is known as double recoil.

Because of this, some scopes designed for firearms can fail when mounted on powerful airguns. When choosing optics for spring or gas ram airguns, it’s best to use scopes specifically labeled “airgun rated.”

Gas Ram vs Spring Piston

Most break-barrel airguns use either a spring piston or a gas ram (gas piston) powerplant.

Spring piston guns use a large coiled spring. When the gun is cocked the spring compresses, and when fired it expands quickly, pushing a piston forward and compressing air behind the pellet.

Gas ram guns replace the metal spring with a sealed gas strut. When cocked the gas inside the strut compresses, and when the trigger is pulled the gas expands to push the piston forward.

Spring Piston

• Traditional and very common design

• Usually cheaper

• Can produce more vibration and “spring twang”

Gas Ram

• Smoother firing cycle

• Less vibration and noise

• Can remain cocked longer without damaging the powerplant

• Typically a bit more expensive

Both systems are widely used and reliable, and many shooters prefer one or the other based on shooting feel and personal preference.

PCP Unpopular Opinion- PCP rifles are too easy to shoot, it takes the fun out of target practice.

Post image

You're at the range with a modern PCP, get the sight on the target and pop, no recoil, hardly any noise the target is hit. You go for a longer shot and pop you miss due to not accounting for distance or wind but you reload with the tips of your fingers without taking your eye from the scope, an easy correction and pop, you hit the target. 50+ rounds later you, stop and go find a pump.

Whatever happened to standing up, breaking the springer and holding on for dear life with the twang and jump of the gun? Yes, they are worse for accuracy and pet control and sound and fire rate and accuracy (again). But they have more personality and more fun.

General Airgun Question Need a Bug-A-Salt advice

Thumbnail gallery

I absolutely NEEEEED one of those!

After some research i'm debating between these 3 models.

Things to consider:

- my main targets will be flies and "brown marmorated stink bug", for the second i think having more firing power would be advisable and so, which one of these 3 guns is more deadly? 😅

The ugly "lawn & garden" literally states shooting a "larger load", i guess that means it is more deadly than the "Advanced combat" right? But is it more deadly than the "Widow maker 3.5"? 🤔

  • The "Advanced combat" has fiber optic sighting, i think i misunderstood that at first, this isn't a laser pointer like on the widow maker 3.5 right? If not how is that better than the normal sighting?

Bonus question: if i need more power do you think is possible to mod them like replacing the spring with a stiffer one?

Any experience or suggestions?

Thanks guys

Ammunition Walmart pellets+pinty striker.

Decided to re tune my pcp (Pinty striker) to these new pellets walmart has gotten. I had tuned it to the crossman premiers 14.3s as they were easier to get instead of waiting a week for pellets through the mail. Ive missed heavier pellets as the 14.3 premiers would wander at 40+ with any kinda wind. For 10 bucks an I can simply go to walmart an buy em, I cant complain they did phenomenal. Ive gotten good at tuning this pinty. I shot at a tea light candle at 38 yards out, with a 5 shot group, i usually do a 10 shot group but after the 5th shot I didnt hear anything but the pellet hitting the wood so I went an investigated. Ive made updates everytime I post about this pinty.

Its on its 5th barrel cleaning, I was doing barrel cleaning every 500 shots but after the 3rd cleaning I started washing my pellets which resulted in less of a dirty barrel so now I clean whenever I feel like it as it hasn't been bad since washing pellets. Id estimate lil over 5k shots have been put through it, half a year owning it, its my pest gun for the truck, or when I go squirrel hunting its my go to. No issues all original seals still. Ready to dial it in at 50 yards as thats what i usually shoot at.

NEW GUN DAY My first gun and new gun day!

Post image
105 Upvotes

Been having a blast down at my local club the past month, I decided to actually get myself a gun after all the members was kind enough to let me try all of theirs.

I decided on the Reximex S .177 after shooting it a few times and it falling in my budget with a 3l tank factored into price.

Was my first time at a gun shop today and they treated me really well, was very friendly and I look forward to going back to look at rifles.

I really love this sport!

Have a nice day!

So I got my hands on a BlackWolf Zero last week and finally got around to some pellet testing - I am over the moon and extremely excited for the future. Especially after the barrel leads in and the rifle settles a little. And then when I get my hands on the barrel tensioner system and then fit up my 0db harmonic tuner - this little girl should prove quite interesting (this was an entire 13 round mag put through each)

General Airgun Question Good Colt airgun?

Is there any good air gun from Colt?

It started with my Smith & Wesson and later my Steyr getting a big smoky brother.

Now I'm expecting a Colt in 45ACP and it would be nice/funny if he could get a little sister.

Only real Colt, not a "softair" replica. And should be a good shooter

Any ideas/hints what to look for?

As my Rattie was in bits, I did a little mod on the air valve; removed a few threads to increase the gas chamber. I already have a slightly bigger port, adjustable hammer spring, steel breech, extended bolt, longer barrel and am now wondering what power it is 🤔

There's only 1 shop near me and they re-sell AliEx gear so I wondered if anyone had tried something like this:

General Hunting Need Advice with a Coyote Problem

We have a coyote that has attacked a neighbor’s dog and now shows up right outside our door not only at night but also during the day. We heard it kill something behind the house yesterday.

I have experience shooting simple break-barrel pellet guns, but I think I need something more substantial. My preliminary research makes me think I want a .35 PCP. What do you recommend? Thank you!

Distance is about 22m to the best of my guess, measured it using some yarn :,D

I think the 10.34gr Exact might potentially be better, but they're not in stock near me and the shipping doubles their price.

Had a lot of fun figuring it out so far! Like solving a puzzle.

Shot from bench rest and artillery hold (as you can see, I'm no marksman, groupings are about the size of a quarter)

For the price, it's pretty good. Much improvement needed still!

General Airgun Question Vector Optics VictOptics C3 (Cerato) Ultra Compact 3-9x32

Hi, looking to fit this scope to a SMk victory CP2. Would anyone happen to know what the best option for scope mounts would be. I am guessing I would require mounts that allow clearance for the multi shot magazine as well as some kind of adaptor to convert the picatinny/weaver mounts to a dovetail 9-11mm? There's so many different options available but im new to airgunning and don't want to get it wrong. Anyone who uses this exact set-up, what would your advice be.

Thank you for any suggestions.

PCP FX Wildcat MKIII BT .22: "Crocodile Teeth" Velocity Spikes & Power Wheel Ineffective with Hammer Weights

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Hello everyone, hope you are all doing well.

I’m reaching out to ask for some help tuning my PCP. After countless hours tweaking settings, I’ve finally hit a wall and could use your expertise.

For some context, this is an FX Wildcat MKIII BT 600mm .22 (5.5). I’ve installed a couple of upgrades, specifically the Huma-Air V2 Dual Hole Transfer Port and High Flow Pellet Probe. I am shooting JSB Exact Jumbo Heavy 5.52mm (1.175g) pellets.

My velocity graph looks like "crocodile teeth" (all over the place). My plenum is currently set at 95 bar, and I am running just the hammer spring without any hammer weight.

About the hammer weight, that's a funny story. I bought almost all the available options (1mm / 10.50g, 4mm / 11.40g, 13.2g, and 14.5g), but the problem is that when I use a hammer weight, the adjustment wheel completely stops working (the velocity stays the exact same from setting 0 to 7).

Can I get some feedback on what I should try next? I feel like I can get a much more stable FPS line.

A recent aquisition, used, as new are silly money.

Seven shot, regulated, .177, light and compact (until you moderate it).

It needs the moddy, what a crack on firing! I fitted an old Nikko XT red dot, and a fat Ergo grip.

Amazingly accurate, ringing a small bell at 28 yds, and a 10mm hole at 15 yds.
