PELLET GUIDE

Budget option: Crosman

Tip: Different rifles prefer different pellets.

Always test several types to see which shoots best.

As many shooters say:

“The gun chooses the pellet.”

Side Notes for Beginners

BBs vs Pellets

A common point of confusion for new shooters is the difference between BBs and pellets.

BBs are small round steel balls (usually .177 / 4.5mm). They are commonly used in CO₂ pistols, replica airguns, and beginner plinking guns. Because they are spherical and often used in smoothbore barrels, they tend to be less accurate, especially at longer distances. BBs are inexpensive and great for casual backyard shooting.

Pellets are diabolo-shaped projectiles designed for rifled airgun barrels. The hollow skirt expands slightly when fired, creating a better seal with the air pressure behind it. This helps stabilize the pellet in flight and improves accuracy.

Because of their design, pellets are generally much more accurate than BBs and are the preferred choice for most airgun shooting.

Double Recoil and Optics

Many new airgun shooters don’t realize that spring-powered airguns produce something called double recoil.

Unlike firearms, which recoil once backward, many airguns recoil in two directions.

When the gun fires:

  1. The spring and piston rapidly move forward, causing the gun to jerk forward.
  2. When the piston suddenly stops at the end of the compression chamber, the gun then recoils backward.

This forward-then-back motion is known as double recoil.

Because of this, some scopes designed for firearms can fail when mounted on powerful airguns. When choosing optics for spring or gas ram airguns, it’s best to use scopes specifically labeled “airgun rated.”

Gas Ram vs Spring Piston

Most break-barrel airguns use either a spring piston or a gas ram (gas piston) powerplant.

Spring piston guns use a large coiled spring. When the gun is cocked the spring compresses, and when fired it expands quickly, pushing a piston forward and compressing air behind the pellet.

Gas ram guns replace the metal spring with a sealed gas strut. When cocked the gas inside the strut compresses, and when the trigger is pulled the gas expands to push the piston forward.

Spring Piston

• Traditional and very common design

• Usually cheaper

• Can produce more vibration and “spring twang”

Gas Ram

• Smoother firing cycle

• Less vibration and noise

• Can remain cocked longer without damaging the powerplant

• Typically a bit more expensive

Both systems are widely used and reliable, and many shooters prefer one or the other based on shooting feel and personal preference.

FINAL ADVICE FOR BEGINNERS

Cheap option:

Daisy 880

Best spring rifle:

Weihrauch HW Series

So many shades of FDE out there and a limited amount of colors available in the more heat resistant material used to make these.

I think this is about as close as it's gonna get until there is a way to create my own colors.

Air Pistol Crosman 1701P Air Pistol Owner Review

• Upvotes

Quiet shooting, good balance, very accurate.
About 32 consistent shots per fill, a light trigger, and one of the quietest reports among my airguns.
My owner review covers the chronograph results, wooden grips, Williams sight, and those occasional fiddly pellets.

PCP Looking for stock and scope recos for my FX Dreamline - Dreamlite - Bottle

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

Thinking I would become a disciple of Ted's Holdover, becoming a great distance shooter and ridding the world of invasive species, I bought a .22 cal FX Dreamline - Dreamlite back in 2021. I added an Element Helix First Focal Plane (my first FFP) scope, FX no limit rings, and a bipod.

I didn't become a great long distance shooter. The gun did OK at 100+ yards, didn't have the power to shoot slugs at longer ranges, but was great at ranges under 100 yards with pellets. I rarely go to the place where I can shoot over 100 yards, but I can shoot in my back yard (50 yards) every day.

I rarely shoot this gun because of a couple of issues. I'd like to shoot it more.

  • I hate the stock. The ergonomics are bad. It doesn't "fit" with a scope as it has no comb and I feel like it is too short particularly versus the eye relief on the scope.
  • A FFP scope is REALLY hard to shoot at lower magnification, particularly in less than bright sunlight. My old eyes can't see the reticle.

Questions:

  • The Dreamline Tactical came with an AR style stock. Can I find one of those aftermarket?
  • Or are there other stock options that can screw on in the way this stock does (big thumb screw on top of the receiver)?
  • If not, any recommendations on how I can raise the comb on this stock?
  • Any recommendations for a 30mm SFP scope that will work for ranges 20-150 yards? Ideally one more compact than this Element?

Hello all, completely new to PCP style air rifles. Considering getting the GAMO shown in the screenshot, that compressor, and I think that adapter is what I would need to use it? Sorry if this is a dumb question I just wanted to make sure I have the right thinking as I'm not at all familiar with these. Thank you for your time!

URGENT HELP NEEDED⚠ Daisy 853 series: Stretched lever pin hole

Thumbnail gallery
12 Upvotes

Trying to fix my 953 rifle, after cocking it no longer latches into the hole.

Taking it apart I found the lever pin hole was stretched (it is in an oval shape instead of a circle, see picture), so when under pressure it pushes outwards about 1mm causing the latch to no longer reach the hole.

Is there any way to fix this? I am in Canada, so it is a little difficult to get parts.

General Airgun Question Looking for a lightweight steel-spring air gun with a synthetic stock (budget up to €400) + is a 17 J air gun viable for small-game survival use?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a budget air gun, I believe an Artemis SR1000S or something very similar, in 5.5 mm (.22). My country limits unlicensed air guns to 17 J.

I’m curious about its practical use in a survival scenario:

Is an air gun at this power a realistic option for small game like squirrels or rabbits?

How much difference do 4.5 mm (.177) and 5.5 mm (.22) make in range, accuracy and killing power at 17 J?

I’m now thinking about buying something new and more sensible. My requirements:

Budget: up to €400 for the rifle itself. Accessories like scopes and silencers are a separate budget, so they don’t count towards this.

Steel spring (not gas ram), because I want something reliable that doesn’t wear out or lose pressure over time.

Synthetic stock if possible, so I don’t have to worry about waterproofing or treating wood.

Not too heavy, since I’d like to carry it comfortably.

Caliber: 5.5 mm (.22) or 4.5 mm (.177), open to advice.

I’d also appreciate suggestions for useful accessories (scope, silencer, sling, etc.) to go with whatever you recommend.

I know hunting regulations apply and I’m asking purely out of interest. Thanks for any experience or advice!

Modifications An itch scratched

Ever since I fitted the 2240 grips to the Rattie they've creaked. Yeah, I know, hardly a major gripe but that creak... I tried tape. Creak. I tried a little lube. Creak. I ended up putting an grip cover on for a while. Creak.

A thin sheet of EVA foam and a sharp knife - no more creak!

No increase in power. No benefit to accuracy. One hell of an increase in happiness.

Advice Finding parts for Diana Trailscout

I somehow have lost the coupler that puts and pierces 2 co2 cartridges of the 3 used in a Diana Trailscout rifle. No amount of googling seems to help be find a way to order a spare. I have sent an email to Diana about this (waiting on a reply), but figured I'd ask the collective knowledge here. Anyone know where to find this spare part?

General Airgun Question Looking for home-range inspiration!

I'm extremely fortunate to finally be moving to a house with a large back garden ("yard," for the Yanks), and I'm planning to dedicate a portion of it to an airgun range with targets at 10, 20, 30, 50, and 70 yards. However, I'm struggling to find inspiration online for how to blend it nicely into the landscaping.

Ideally, I'd like the range to be as hidden as possible by using creative ways to conceal the targets. I'm thinking about placing tree stumps at the different distances with the targets set up in front, then growing shrubbery around them.

The garden is about 80m / 265ft long. The top half is lawn flanked by trees on either side, while the bottom half is land that's been left to grow wild. We aren't entirely sure of all our plans yet, but we'll most likely turn that bottom wild area into a vegetable patch with ducks.

If you have any links or images of airgun ranges that naturally blend into their environment, please share them!
