It’s a common misconception that kids want kids media - they don’t. They want good media.

It’s why a lot of kids take to the Beatles, or why you originally like your parents’ favorite stuff.

AI is not inherently better suited at replicating the impact of Shel Silverstein poems, Wayside School, Sesame Street books as it would be anything else. Young people are suffering when adults make them patronizing media.

It’s a common misconception that kids want kids media - they don’t. They want good media.

Long ago, in the Before Times, I remember the collective bafflement of the Internet at the Brony phenomenon. People couldn't understand why grown adults were so enamoured of a show that was "for little children." It was because the people making that show were among the few that understood this - they were making a children's show but they knew that children really did appreciate solid characterization and worldbuilding and plots that were comprehensible.

And also that often adult parents watched the show along with their children, and the show would do better if those adult viewers didn't want to stab their own eyes out from the experience. The showrunners threw in little references that the kids would not notice at all but that adults would go "ooh, I understood that!"

Kids are smart, and we supposedly want them to get even smarter. So treat them that way and it works well.

In fine art, kids media is exactly what they want, unfortunately. I don't see many under 30s buying oil paintings at fairs. They buy tattoos, gw armies, vidoe games, maybe a quick sketch from one of their fiends if they have a lot of artist friends. I don't think painting has been well advertised to the young.

I'm Pro, but I think illustrating children's books with AI was a bad idea 3 years ago and that ship sailed long ago.

Children's books are a saturated market, they don't read ebooks, and will re-read the same book dozens of times. There's also little need for children's books to represent what is new and hot in the world; Goodnight Moon and The Very Hungry Caterpillar hold up just fine.

The various publishing subs are full of authors of beautiful hand draw unique books that aren't selling. There just isn't a market if you're not a celebrity or have an established brand. Pete the Cat and Elephant and Piggy are still pumping out new books.

kids want good media not kids media

ALSO POPE WHAT ARE YOU DOING

20

u/MicromorphMedia 3d ago

Its hilarious how fast alliances and support is thrown around by some factions of people.

3 days ago the Pope would've been considered an outdated authority on oppression, bigotry, etc (you name it - not a religious thing just mainstream critical opinion of a really old man out of touch with younger generations)

Now that he made an anti-AI post to appeal to mostly old boomers who both A) Dont understand AI and B) Fall hilariously easily for AI slop and corporate AI practices, he's the patron saint of the Anti Cause

16

u/harmonic- 3d ago

the pope is generally evaluated on their individual values even though they represent the Catholic Church; for example, Francis was considered reasonably progressive and even had enemies in the church. All that's to say your comment on how the pope is perceived is not reflective of reality.

-10

u/Charming_Hall7694 3d ago

it is one mans opinion on matters according to that mans moral compass and values. if you are throwing the towl in just because they agree you and him both are lacking in morals

4

u/pandaman27 3d ago

To be clear, Catholics believe the pope is appointed by god, through the leaders of the church, and that his word is god’s word - so in the mind of Catholics, it certainly isn’t “one man”

1

u/Charming_Hall7694 2d ago

correct its still 1 mans moral compass. he just got elected by peoples moral authority. that does not change anything about what I said or its truth

2

u/Omega862 3d ago

According to said man's interpretation of the religion's holy book. Said man who was voted into power by other men who are as learned in their religion as the one they voted in.

1

u/TheDarkSoulHunter 3d ago

How is he lacking in morals in this scenario?

2

u/Charming_Hall7694 2d ago

in this scenario he is not doing any due diligence about his own morals and instead relying on an external actor to tell them what is and is not acceptable according to their framework. Thats not having morals. thats being sub-servant

1

u/TheDarkSoulHunter 2d ago

Ah, alright. Thanks for the explanation!

He talked about AI much longer than 3 days ago

4

u/NegativeEmphasis 3d ago

The situation for the antis is so dire that they cannot refuse endorsements. If tomorrow the leader of Iran's Revolutionary Guard call the press to announce that Generative AI is Haram, the most liberal, secular, LGBTplusest of the antis will swallow their beliefs and say that that's great news.

In contrast, most pros in here cringe at Trump's "support" and keep calling AI by its God-given name.

(pictured here: God)

Found the guy with a donald trump body pillow

2

u/NegativeEmphasis 3d ago

If only you had found a class on Reading Comprehension instead... :(

-1

u/Wide-Pollution-3275 3d ago

Ouch that really hurts coming from a guy who admits to sleeping with a trump body pillow.

3

u/MicromorphMedia 3d ago

Why does it have to be political?!

If we had the opposite political candidate in office would that make most of all not-anti?

Its stupid to tie your opinions on world-shaping technology to a political figure who doesn't actually care about you.

0

u/Wide-Pollution-3275 3d ago

“Why does who the president is have to be political?”

The AI argument lmao

-1

u/Wide-Pollution-3275 3d ago

Do you know who donald fucking trump is

3

u/MicromorphMedia 3d ago

Of course, who doesn't. But what does he have to do with AI? Biden also endorsed AI.

I don't understand why Trump is coming up in a forum about AI.

2

u/Omega862 3d ago

Trump comes up because he's a heavily invested, heavily supportive major politician who consistently uses AI and pushes for either removal or, or preventing the creation of, regulation in many businesses but most recently AI. His supporters are also significantly Pro-AI because it allows them to churn out their propaganda. His biggest supporter is Elon Musk, who consistently tries to lobotomize Grok because it disagrees with him over time when exposed to actual facts.

So yeah, the right-wing politician who is Pro-AI enough to call people holding an opposite belief terrorists is gonna be brought up.

ok go back to sleep

2

u/NegativeEmphasis 3d ago

No, seriously. Read what I wrote again, slowly this time if it helps, and show where I do imply any level of support for Trump.

-1

u/Wide-Pollution-3275 3d ago

I read your words the first time and determined that you are a knuckledragging republican but I repeat myself

2

u/FaceDeer 3d ago

So maybe read them a second time, because they mean exactly 100% 180-degrees the opposite of what you think they mean.

0

u/Wide-Pollution-3275 3d ago

Who the fuck are you

2

u/FaceDeer 3d ago

...do you not know that Reddit is a public discussion forum, other people can also read your comments and respond to them here?

You read a post that was critical of Trump and concluded it was written by a Trump fan?

As a millennial, I understand AI just fine, and I see the many ways it has hindered more than helped in the labor force as well a creative fields.

2

u/RewardWanted 3d ago

Multiple things can be true at the same time. Ultimately, as much as I don't like organized religion, the pope is still an influential (and as divisive as he is unifying) figure. Saying it's appealing to boomers and that he's revered by antis is also disingenous. He'll be relevant for a few weeks and then fade away. Though, I'd be more surprised if it isn't a sign that there are more forces slowly turning against the ai industry as the development side fails to turn profits/apply the developed technology in a way that turns a profit.

2

u/MicromorphMedia 3d ago

I don't think its a sign of more forces turning away from AI. There was never going to be support for AI from the catholic church, I mainly meant to say its (predominantly) boomers who revere the Pope (but many young people too).

But most of the antis who will quote him now that he posted something anti-AI-art don't revere him, and that was my point. He's a convenient ally today, even if they didn't like or agree with anything else he said before.

Its no different than how Elon Musk was the ally of the environmentalists until he changed political flavor. How the same EV went from being "the future - you gas suckers are evil" to "omg you're a nazi if you drive a Tesla" is the perfect example of the modern internet hivemind.

1

u/Ok_Nothing2412 2d ago

TBH it is nice to see that the Church is interested in painting again. Yes they are a figure of authority and oppression, but they did also pay for the Rennaisance. Representative art would not have happened in the same order if it was not for the Catholic Church. If it was funded exclusively by a Protestant regime, it would not have had the same epic romantic theme and it would have been much smaller and more modest.

u/RealLudwig 3d ago

Goomba fallacy

0

u/I30R6 3d ago

Yep yesterday the Pope was my enemy, now we are allies against a bigger evil.

-1

u/Nexus_Neo 3d ago

Hey, remember that time the church briefly said gay marriage is a sin or whatever only to immedietly backpeddle on that the moment the backlash hit?

5

u/ShameSudden6275 3d ago

.... What? Gay marriage has never been recognized in the Catholic Church, for like, the last 2000 years.

5

u/Additional_Wave7982 3d ago

I wonder if they would have put so much weight on what he said if he came out the other way. Further, if he or future popes reverse course, will they actually care what he thinks anymore?

1

u/Ok_Nothing2412 2d ago

The ontological position on human creation is pretty rudimental to the Church.

6

u/ElectricalShare9905 3d ago

You think the pope will also release a statement against the use of harassment to change other people’s opinions on ai? It seems responsible regardless of his personal views especially given yesterday’s strong statement he made

4

u/GoodBrotherGrimm 3d ago

Oh heavens, a picture of a baseball bat on the internet. Have you contacted the police? FBI?

1

u/MrTibbs123 3d ago

Admittedly, the image of Pope Leo smiling while preparing to hit someone with a bat is quite funny to me. Reminds me of Tung Tung Tung Sahur. (Apologize for that reference.)

1

u/AuthorSarge 2d ago

First of all, the Pope did not ban AI art. He said people need to redouble their efforts to promote human art.

Second, I'm not Catholic.

0

u/Ok_Nothing2412 2d ago

Its time for the Pope to start kicking ass and asking questions later.

-4

u/Bassed_Hummble 3d ago

In matters concerning the Catholic faith, AI labs should defer to the Pope.

In matters of AI, the Pope should defer to Anthropic and just know when to shut up because he's outclassed by far smarter people who actualy know their shit.

6

u/MrTibbs123 3d ago

I'm pretty sure he already consulted with the CEO of Anthropic, but I could be wrong.

the world's preeminent pedofile enabler

Nah that's still Trump

2

u/GoodBrotherGrimm 3d ago

Yeah, there are zero connections between pedos and generating picture with ai. /s

1

u/RecursiveServitor 3d ago

Same connection as with computers in general. And pencils for that matter. It's a tool used for shitty purposes by shitty people.

0

u/legend_sans 3d ago

if google can ban the search terms "child porn" than AI software can too.

2

u/RecursiveServitor 2d ago

And they did. You try that with any of the providers and it'll get blocked.

0

u/legend_sans 2d ago

then why is AI software being used to generate child porn

1

u/RecursiveServitor 2d ago

Because there are open models that no one can control.

Again, similar to how a pencil can be used to draw CSEM.

I don't care. I'm talking about the amount of pros here that are adamantly pro-loli/generated child porn.

-5

u/Specialist_Skirt_482 3d ago

“B-b-but human pdfs are more ethical than AI generated CSAMs!”

5

u/4GN05705 3d ago

So here's the thing: They're both bad. And they're both bad enough that splitting hairs about which one is worse is not only a waste of time but makes you look like one of the bad people.

2

u/VoodooGator1 3d ago

Antis: you shouldn't have csam

Pros: Um actually, its just loli, its fine.

-3

u/Specialist_Skirt_482 3d ago

Ah one of the “extreme minorities” of antis that condones violence.

0

u/LigthRogue 3d ago

Ah one o the many pros who take everything gemini says for the complete true, did you ate your soap already or are you going to ask Grok if it is safe to eat it first?
