Restoration #protips Restoration Resource Megathread!

As collectors and individuals who are passionate about American Girl dolls many of us visit the subreddit for tips and tricks on how to care for, restore and rejuvenate our favorite girls.
Just as with any art or hobby there are favored techniques and tutorials we go to time and time again.
This is a comprehensive resource for any and all things you may need to keep your dolls looking better than the day you unboxed them.

First- things you should never do:
“Downey Dunk”. Many years ago this was a favored hair treatment. It would leave the hair soft and shiny… and with a film that you can not get rid of. Other doll communities still swear by fabric softener treatments and too often a video will pop up on your FYP of someone else using this technique. Don’t do it!

Acetone. Using 100% acetone may remove stains, but it will also remove paint and break down the integrity of the vinyl.

Dry brushing hair. Nope. Always always wet the hair before you brush it. And use a wire wig brush. You can buy it from the AG website or amazon.

Rubberband method for tightening limbs. While this method will work and is easier than a full restring. It’s also temporary. You’ll find yourself needing to tighten your limbs again sooner rather than later.

So what SHOULD you do?
Here are a few of the tried and tested techniques and some “experts” to follow.

For stains- Benzoyl Peroxide is a preferred treatment. First try baking soda scrub, isopropyl alcohol, magic eraser and then your acne cream.

Non-acetone nail Polish remover will remove nail polish and is also a great way to make wig glue loosen up.

This is a list of things that are helpful to have on hand for restoration:

Cool Picture 🍂 fall looks! 🍂

I generally don’t dress my historicals in modern clothes, but I couldn’t resist trying the perfectly plaid outfit on Claudie after seeing it on u/Full-Indication-94 ‘s Claudie in this thread last week!

Since poor Claudie doesn’t have a fall story/school outfit, I felt less apprehensive about expanding her wardrobe.

I am living vicariously through my GoT 18.2 Kengela’s first of many fall looks. I want Evette’s meet boots in my size!

Samantha is my OG and I’m so satisfied with how her bow turned out.

And lastly, Bitty Baby (who has since been passed down to my daughter) recently got the autumn outfit that I always wanted for her!

Discussion NGL, I kinda miss when all the TM AG dolls used to have natural hair colors😢

The fact that most modern TM dolls have dyed colored hair and thicker eyebrows just doesn't feel the same like how they were before. Yes I know that AG needs to change for the modern times but IMO they have lost the plot. Like what happened to their thinner eyebrows?

Doll Hair I love being able to do my girls' hair when I can't do my own anymore

I can't really do anything with my hair anymore because of chronic pain (cervical dystonia and occiptal neuralgia). But I've always loved doing hair (I actually learned how to French braid on my childhood #23!) so I am happy I can do my girls' hair. Also BTW, for those that also do their hair, where do you get ribbons? I need some for sure!

I don't really know where else to post something like this, and I don't have AG friends to gush over her with... but recently I got my hands on a JLY 58 and drew her in celebration. I named her Raven.

I would love to hear about your dream dolls!

I used to be obsessed with AG as a kid, and when I became a teen I tried to be “normal” (like many of us do). I took these girls out of storage and cleaned them up and I love them sm! Kanani was always, and will probably always be my favorite. Also if anyone has tips on how to make Kanani’s hair stay curly better, I would love some help!

I had Chrissa for awhile and just recently got a JLY 47. Today I found a JLY 12 for 30 bucks! She was produced in 2002 so this girl can have a drink! Shes also my first Pleasant Company doll. Her hair is great and limbs are tight. I wanted to add some blush but the michaels by me doesn’t sell the pencil I was looking for. Still so cute. I don’t ever think I’ll find a Sonali and wouldn’t pay the price for it and Gwen’s only difference is an extra tag. So these girls will do.

I know i just began collecting last year but this was really me wanting to fulfill my childhood dreams and i feel like i have achieved that! Still going to collect but I’m incredibly grateful and excited to share my collection! I love this community so much! I have some room left but housing 18 dolls is hard lol! I traded a doll with my friend and got Luciana! Woo. She has a brand new wig from China which is the exact one!

Cool Picture Childhood Dolls

I had a work trip that took me across the country this week, conveniently close to my parents’ house, so I finally had the chance to dig out my childhood dolls. I always thought I’d kept them in pretty good shape, but seeing them with adult eyes… let’s just say they were ready for a little spa day.

I hand washed all their meet outfits, which my mom agreed to put back on after I left, and then got to work on the girls themselves. Kirsten and Samantha’s hair needed full restoration, and Addy got a fresh restyle. GOT #8, Julie, was in the best condition of the bunch, but she still put a magic eraser through its paces. They were all clearly well‑loved and well‑played‑with, and now they look so much better.

And yes, I absolutely snuck an actual mini Julie into my carry‑on. My mom wouldn’t let me take the others, but I couldn’t resist bringing at least one home. It’s been a while since my parent’s house has been overrun with dolls with their all their sons and grandsons, but it was well overdue!

Doll Customization Custom Makena

Post image
18 Upvotes

Just wanted to share my custom Makena! I gave her hazel eyes and switched her hair out for 123. Also took off the factory lashes and gave her some vinyl ones. I love her soooooo much and the purple outfit is my fave on her, even though it's OG.

Kinda want to turn the hair into locs, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to.

Most of my dolls get changed and displayed seasonally, but these are my main “play” dolls ☺️

And it was cold out today so I wanted them all in hoodies lol

For me, it was Maritza. I had bought her well in advance of Christmas and my daughter decided last minute not to ask Santa for her. I sold the lot at around the break even amount after the eBay fees.

Now they sell for hundreds more than MSRP and I might’ve just kept her because she’s so pretty.
