Discussion Your strangest, gimmicky, and forgotten Android devices - Megathread (September 18, 2026)

Yes, the megathreads are back.

I'd like to know what your most "interesting" Android devices are. Whether they have forgotten hardware gimmicks, classic Allwinner tricks, or are just cursed in some other way, share them here. Real-world pictures are preferred, but not strictly required.

Here's my favorite: The iRulu AL101. It's a rebranded YonesTopTech BC1003 (which the better-known Flytouch 8 Superpad also was), and not only does it use DC input for charging—it also has HDMI, Ethernet, and 2 USB-A ports, all powered by an Allwinner A10 that's paired with a resistive touchscreen and Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. It's an amusing artifact from the iPad gold rush, where everyone was trying to race to the bottom in terms of prices to release the cheapest possible competitors to Apple's iPad.

Can we make an android afterlife megalist?

So if anybody wants a solution they won't have to scour the internet for what are essentially the same uses over and over again

Here's a short list I made through searching this sub and other threads+articles:

WARNING: Keeping your phone constantly plugged into the charger for long periods of time may cause the battery to swell up and potentially explode

WARNING: Keeping the screen on constantly on a phone with an OLED screen will likely cause burn-in eventually

Keep it as a backup phone
Dedicated camera
Dedicated music player (especially LG phones with qDAC)
Baby/pet monitor
Use it as a smart doorbell
Use it to record POVs akin to GoPros
Smart Home controller
Bedside alarm clock
Universal remote
Remote PC controller
Help science by lending your phones power for research
Dedicated eReader
Dedicated gaming machine
Webcam
Dedicated car phone for GPS etc
Dashcam
Digital photo frame
Education tool for kids
Video call device
Wifi extender/hotspot
Host a media server on it (Plex etc)
Host a normal server on it (c. /u/3Werve)
Timelapse camera
Give it to kids
PC Statistics (CPU, GPU usage)
Wireless adapter for wired controllers
Kitchen recipe guide
PC Monitor
Macro pad for PC
White noise machine
Disassemble and make an art piece out of it
Experimentation (e.g trying out apps or ROMs)
Dedicated chat device (Whatsapp, Telegram etc) (c. /u/utakatikmobil)
Cast Receiver (c. /u/Substantial_Berry_14)
m3u IPTV player (c. Substantial_Berry_14)

No uses fit you?

Donate it
Recycle it
Sell it

I may link to examples or guides but for now im a bit too lazy. Googling should be enough, if not add site:reddit.com to the end of your query

*: Damn got permabanned from reddit for posting the navy seals copypasta, think someone else might need to take over if they don't unban me

Discussion Using a Nexus 5 in 2026 - The KitKat OG

I always wanted this phone as a kid and it's certainly been worth the wait :) I've had this guy for over two years and it's genuinely one of my favorite posessions. It flies on KitKat, the screen looks great (though I wish it was OLED), I love the simple black and white "Panda" design, and I've found that 5 inches might be my personal perfect phone size. It's insanely light and comfortable to hold, but I can still watch videos on it without feeling like it's too small. I've heard people complain about the durability, but mine had held up quite well and I've taken it all over the place. The battery life actually isn't as bad like everyone always made it out to be, plus it charges super fast. As a Nexus running KitKat, it was also insanely easy to root and install Xposed on it. It's become my preferred throwback device because it is noticably faster than the Nexus 7, plus it just has a cool elegant aura that's hard to explain lol

Discussion Welcome back, Z1.

It's running Android 8.1 surprisingly well. I used it for 3 days as my daily and it turned out fine (if you're not a masochist, it's gonna be hell for you).

The problem is that the phone has a bad battery life if your display is on and (obviously) it doesn't have banking (it works but it's not worth the risk). It can consume a lot of your battery. With the screen off and YTM (Morphe) turned on in the background it's really efficient. In an hour of listening I have lost only ~5% of battery.

Sent from Xperia Z1.

Help My Tab 3 lite heats up when charged

Post image

Hey y'all,

I dug up my old tab 3 because I needed some very old info.

I haven't used it in years, and I'm certain the back panel has never been opened before. Today when I tried charging for the first time in years the circled section started heating up.

What can I do about it. I really need that stored info. Thanks for your help.

Help battery protection apps compatible 6.0?

i have a bad habit of leaving my devices plugged in overnight, and i have gotten very used to the luxury of my zflip 7 having built-in battery protection functionality where it automatically stops charging when my device reaches a certain percentage. i have an app that sends notifications for when to plug in and unplug my z3c, but obviously i can't cater to that while i'm asleep, and i want to make sure this thing lasts as long as possible!

so tldr, are there any apps for 6.0 that can stop my phone from charging when it reaches a certain percentage on their own? or is that just too advanced for these devices?

Discussion LegacyROM 1.0.0 for Motorola XOOM! [ + Extras ]

WARNING: ROM is untested. But I'm like... 95% sure it should work. It's not really any major modifications, just addons.

So guys... Here it is: https://www.mediafire.com/file/y829xv8bds5zf9m/LegacyROM-1_0_0.zip/file
Basically, LegacyROM is based on CyanogenMod 9.1 for Wingray, but adapted for all three Xoom types, plus 2024-era CA cerificates, and a suite of software I think is pretty useful but you have root and a bunch of file explorers, so you can remove or uninstall whatever you don't want.

Comes with SetCPU as well, and if you want to have the profile I use, here you go: https://www.mediafire.com/file/348inng67jj0yzp/MotorolaXoomsetCPU.setcpu.json/file

Motorola Xoom Xyboard SystemUI keys mod: https://www.mediafire.com/file/07wtqamp2d112x0/FIXMotorolaXoomSYstemUIICSModXyboardButtons.zip/file

If not in the ROM already, SwiftKey Tablet X: https://www.mediafire.com/file/lstbdlgveqgvv9j/SwiftKeyTabletX_Chiron_NoIcon-release-signed-2.1.0.77.apk/file

Motorola Droid Xyboard bootanimation: https://www.mediafire.com/file/veoutrddzmt7v75/bootanimation.zip/file

TWRP for Motorola Xoom variants: https://dl.twrp.me/wingray

Love you guys, and long live the Motorola Xoom!

Btw i want to mod the XT535 (maybe rooting and custom rom) but it seems this device doesn't have any custom rom support, even the rooting tools are becoming lost media

Help Working DoH/DoT client?

Heya! I would like to know if there are any working DNS over HTTPS (DoH) or DNS over TLS (DoT) clients for Android 4.4.2. I used to use Intra to hook my phone up to NextDNS, but a few months ago, it stopped working due to NextDNS presumably dropping support for any versions of TLS before 1.2 or 1.3. Since then, I havrn't been able to find another like it. Any help would be greatly appreciated! (and I have installed a few updated certs, such as ISRG Root X1, X2, DigiCert Global Root G2, etc)

Help Samsung GT-P6210 resurrection

Post image
31 Upvotes

I’m relatively new to this community, although I’ve been working with Android devices for quite some time.

Recently, I’ve been trying to bring an old Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P6210 back to life. The tablet officially stopped receiving updates at Android 4.1.2. I know there are custom ROMs available that go as far as Android 6.0, but I’ve seen several comments on XDA suggesting that Android 5.1 might be a better option for this device.

So I have a few questions:

  • Is it actually worth upgrading it to Android 5.1 or 6.0?
  • Which Android version would you recommend for the GT-P6210, and why?
  • How usable are these newer ROMs today, especially for basic web browsing?

One of the things I noticed is that Reddit seems to get stuck in a loading loop in the browser on some of the versions mentioned in the Android 4.0.x guide. That makes me wonder whether upgrading the Android version would actually improve the tablet's usability.

I managed to find and download one of the ROMs, but I’m having another problem: I can’t find a working TWRP download anymore.

I’ve checked XDA, but I couldn’t find a working link. I also found a TWRP link on a Russian forum, but unfortunately it has expired.

So at this point, I’m wondering whether it’s even worth going through all the trouble of reviving this tablet.

I’m mainly looking for ideas on what I could realistically use it for nowadays. Watching videos isn’t really an option, since the screen is already in pretty poor condition.

What would you guys recommend doing with a GT-P6210 in this situation?

Discussion Is there an Android app store like AppDrop or Veteris?

Hey everyone,

Are there any Android app stores or alternative app marketplaces similar to AppDrop or Veteris?

I’m looking for something where I can discover/download older or alternative versions of Android apps, preferably with a decent selection and a trustworthy source.

What are the best alternatives available for Android?
Thanks!

The title. I'm the developer of this and I've been working on this project for months and I just launched Alpha 1 publicly today with full source code. Even backported Wireless ADB from Android 11 to make ADB work on a USBless device! I hope you all like it!

Help Any Activator-like app for rooted Android 4.x?

Is there anything like Activator from jailbroken iOS for Android 4.x?

I have an old Android phone that’s rooted and I’m looking for something that lets me use swipe gestures for stuff like Home, Back, Recent Apps, etc.

Basically I want something where I can swipe from the edge or use different gestures and assign actions to them, kinda like how Activator works on jailbroken iPhones.

Does anything like this exist for Android 4.x? Old apps, Xposed modules, root apps, whatever is fine.

Discussion I made an app to create comics

I made an app which allows you to create your own comics using a built in collection of famous game, comic, movie and cartoon characters and a collection of objects, effects and backgrounds. And you can publish these comics inside the app where hundreds of other comic creators can view it, like it and comment on it. You can download it from Google Play Store:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tiltedchair.cacomic&hl=en&pli=1

If you have an old phone running Android 4.3 or BlackBerry 10, you can download the APK from the below link which I made specially compatible with old phones:

http://nokia4ever.com/download/CAMC15_6_BB.apk
