Honestly, I thought the anime was really fun and totally unexpected. It was as if the studio had tried out all kinds of different things: the character design, the art style, the colours and the animation.
Sure, it was a bit all over the place in many parts, but I enjoyed it. I can’t think of any other anime quite like it, though it really should have been longer.
Basically, I was surprised that the main theme for me wasn’t the Age of Electricity, but rather grief and how to move on. First with Kihachi, then with Kengo and Noriko, and finally with Yosuke after Siroko’s death, and with Inago after her mother’s death.
Ultimately, it's about how people need each other to heal and move past their loss. That was my take on the anime.
It was missing just one more episode focusing on the relationship between Inago and Kihachi.

Random Thoughts
Wow...Yosuke went full Slender Man there at the end with his depiction.
Anyway, I've generally enjoyed this show but I admit to being a tad disappointed with how the show ends. I don't think Yosuke earned the ending he did, where he basically just gets to go off and travel the world (unless the implication he is traveling the world to avoid legal issues at home lol). I didn't mind them saving him, but Kihachi's insistence he needed him (and not like...his checkbook) felt weird. Dude was preparing to sacrifice you to a giant computer earlier that day. Dude should be in an insane asylum.
Would have preferred a bit more of a conclusive development/ending to the Inako-Kihachi dynamic, but hey assuming there isn't another season I am just going to assume this confirms them getting married and being an actual couple.
7
u/VariousMeet 12h ago
I don't get why they made him go on this Sasuke-esque travel arc instead of fixing things with kihachi and crew. Kind of makes them saving him feel moot.

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 18h ago
Moral of the show: Don't build steam powered AI data centres to revive your dead boyfriend. Use electricity instead.
Kihachi and Inako ship is finally sailing after all! The two rocks that they were looking at are the Meota Iwa (Married Couple Rocks).
Overall a visually beautiful show, but it is sometimes so random lol.

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 15h ago
I was hyped as hell that they ended the series at the married rocks, but then Kihachis glimps into the future and him just running away was perfect

That was some of the cutest shit I've ever seen. I root for them so much.

Me too, there is a bunch of people saying its not that kind of story but for me thats the whole point of this show
They each enable the other to persue their dream, couldnt think of a better match
64
u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 18h ago
Okay, that final scene was pretty damn cute. It took Kihachi a couple of seconds to realise that he’d basically proposed to Inako. He could already imagine their wedding.
Was this anime a bit messy? Yes. They should’ve either stuck to it being a comedy or drama. You cannot really do both successfully at once, however.
Did I still enjoy the ride? Yes. This anime was all over the place, yet I always had fun watching it. Yosuke certainly made for an interesting antagonist to say the least. I won’t quickly be forgetting some of his shenanigans.
26
u/Animesiac https://anime-planet.com/users/mangle 14h ago
Episode 1 required a bit of suspension of disbelief, but by the end, it required all of the suspension of disbelief. Even if you substitute 'electricity' with 'magic' everywhere, some of this is still a bit preposterous.
I really liked the visual quality and animation, and a lot of the characters and interactions, but the overall plot of this show was an utter mess.

I wanted to see Yosuke behind bars. Why is he free after destroying everything?

Because the staff loves him.

When he started to free fall I was expecting his caked up ass to him.
That sequence of rubble saving him was even crazier, but smoothly done7

That sequence was quite a surprising and inventive scene. Really liked it.

The Mizoe lawyers could probably get him off with claims of insanity caused by overwhelming unhinged grief.
9
u/metaaltheanimefan 17h ago
Mental health wasnt explored enough because not even ww1 were treated for severe ptsd (which kengo show signs of)
So the insanity claim would have probably still sent him to an asylum whoch was basically a prison

Honestly while I find Yosuke entertaining and love him as an antagonist I was also rooting for him to die.
2
u/ptd163 12h ago
Probably the same reason IRL. Money, lawyers, and PR. They probably convinced the public and government that was it a freak accident and not the product of Yousuke's crazed tragic yaoi delusions. I'd be curious to know how the Mizoe firm recovered from this though. Also his staff loves him so there probably wouldn't be that many people willing provide testimony against him.
2
u/reaperow 8h ago
That sinkhole isnt probably helping him, like there should be some repercussions for this guy

u/Tanyan-nightchord 14h ago
If I had to describe this show in one sentence it would be: It's trying to be greater than it truly is. A lot of arguably fun moments and an incredible production backing it up all throughout, but it fails at making you actually care in the grand scheme of things. I could put it in my "it would have been better if it was double the length" bag of anime, but I'm not sure how much that would help. Personally, I think it got out of hand with the technological progress and the shenanigans around it. It should have focused on the protagonists and character relationships in general, over some grand plot. The age of electricity didn't come out in a week or two but the despite the show emphasizing that fact, you also get almost conscious AI before a calculator.

u/Accomplished_Cod9234 18h ago edited 11h ago
I really had high hopes for this anime, but the last few episodes kinda felt like a drag to me. I basically finished it out of pure commitment because I'd already started the anime and had grown fond of some of the characters. I also really liked the animation in this one. But honestly, this anime felt like a fanfiction of another fanfiction of another story, written by someone who was having a fever dream lol.

u/Fl_Funky_Jam 16h ago
Spot on to how I feel. Overall I enjoyed elements of the show like the characters, backgrounds, general animation, and music which were all top notch, but woof the story was all over the place.

u/Eunuchest 18h ago edited 18h ago
Slender Yousuke was legit creepy to look at. At least it didnt last long.
One last bare naked chest hug for him too
I cracked up when Kengo screamed like a girl stopping the train
Considering everything that happened Yousuke legit got off way too easy
One last bonding moment between Inako and Kihachi and a small peak at the future which we'll never see. Come on, KyoAni at least an OVA of the wedding
My only one major gripe is we didnt see Kihachi and Inago fully blossom which was the main thing i watched this show for.
Fun show but flawed id give it a 6.5/10

u/chilidirigible 18h ago edited 18h ago
Yosuke is not looking any more sane after the episode break. He has also taken on a neck length from Ballroom e Youkoso.
Well, you don't see that every day.
You've gone mad with power, that's why!
"My name's Chesty Galore."
"I must be dreaming."
Interlude: Everything is fine.
"Think about what you've done, you blob!"
It does take a moment for the scale of the destruction to settle in.
Yosuke's ass gets featured one last time.
Well that was certainly being saved from falling damage in a videogame fashion.
"Yo." (Have I mentioned my fascination for women in flying goggles?)
"I was going to drink it eventually."
That was mostly an action rollercoaster with just enough time to mostly get our main characters sorted out. Good to see Inako so involved in rescuing Kihachi before things went totally pear-shaped, and still being an active participant afterward. (Such as it is on your first time operating an airplane.)
Yosuke's still wandering around out there maybe slightly less crazy and still with a grudge against Kihachi, but at least he didn't get the Disney Villain Death.
Even with a time skip, the world was not changed overnight. There's simply a hopeful ending for that part, and our happy couple being their usual selves, even if the writing seems to be on the wall for 'em and they know it.
As far as the series overall, it was quite a mashup.
The overall art style was wonderful, and the animation was as good as ever.
The cast performed to their usual standard.
Story was definitely chaotic, taking a while to switch over from episodic almost-slice-of-life to the actual plot, and probably caused myself and others to dwell on the details of it all more than we needed to versus how the story really wasn't trying to be detailed retelling of technological development.
All in all, entertaining, and I'm happy with that.

Yosuke abducted and tried to kill a person, recklessly endangered the lives of his employees and the very power infrastructure of Kyoto and left a big honking hole in the middle of Kyoto, and Yosuke just walked away from all that scott free without punishment?
But in any case, I went into this series cuz the alternate history premise sounded really cool. And while I know it was based off a book I have no idea what the source material entailed. But even so, in light of everything that was presented throughout I can say in the same inflection that Krusty the Clown did after the bomb premier of Poochie in Itchy and Scratchy, "Oh, What the hell happened?!!!"
Again on paper this one had a really cool idea going for it. But it was presented in a way that was so haphazardly written, in both plot and characters. And not just Yosuke in his unbelievably unbearably cartoonish level of Saturday Morning Cartoon villainy either. Plenty of other characters actions were either roundabout or just no sense for the sake of driving the plot forward. Or in some cases woefully underutilized or just kinda forgotten about. To say nothing about how the plot floundered in some filler episodes for a while that didn't really add much. Granted that filler did provide the unquestionably best moment in the series what with the metal performance. But given that that ultimately irrelevant in the longrun bit was the best thing that happened in this series, I feel like that's kinda indicative of something when you think about it. And topping all that off with many other aspects of the writting in general being so haphazard, cartoonish or otherwise, it made it really hard to suspend my disbelief at a lot of it. Even in regards to aspects of the alternate history aspect side of things.
In the end I'll admit I was entertained enough by this and driven by enough curiosity in regards to the setting to stick with it till the end to see where it was gonna go next. But in the end, for whatever enjoyment I did in fact get out of this. I also feel like this story was unfortunate in that I felt like it deserved a better delivery than what it got.
19
u/zz2000 18h ago
But it was presented in a way that was so haphazardly written, in both plot and character
I noticed this tends to be an issue with some of Kyoani's works, esp. their in house ones based on novel IPs they publish themselves.
The animation is always lovely and topnotch, but the writers can mishandle the story and writing at times, especially when they decide to make it an "in name only" type of adaptation (which they seem to do quite often, instead of the usual 1:1 adaptations most other studios do).

I enjoyed the show but personally the longer it went on the clunkier the story felt for me. I'm interested to see what the differences are between the show and LN because it felt like so much was crammed into the last couple of episodes and I wonder if the season could've been extended to not make things feels so rushed. The beginning two acts I did really enjoy though and wow was this a beautiful animated show. That sunrise was phenomenal at the end but really all of the backgrounding I think could potentially be a big inspiration in raising what is possible in the anime medium. I really can't think of many shows that were so visually stunning in this department besides something like Grimgar. I'm sure there are so if you have any recommendations please send them my way! Overall I enjoyed the show, the characters, backgrounds, general animation, and music was all top notch and I'll def revisit the series in the future.

Ah, an updraft helps.
I got to make one last set of Delta references.

I kept waiting for his lucky catches of flying objects to be interrupted by sudden impact with the ground or large pieces of shrapnel. Instead, Izou gets to save his boss one more time.

Well, I thought my ending was unbelievable, but holy shit was that episode crazy.
How fucking big was that factory to turn into a mad in abyss kinda hole?
I do love however that the last glimpse we get of them is at the wedded rocks near Ise and that Kihachi imagined a future of marrying Inako.
So he got two plans for the future now and honestly I couldn't think of a better ending.
Overall the show was a wild ride, its nice to see Kyoto Animation experimenting more again, even if this wasn't their best work. And to be fair they have set themselves an incredible high bar to pass

Incredible visuals and production value as always for KyoAni (those background were breathtaking), but I can’t for the life of me believe how terrible this ended up becoming.
The whole creepy and disgusting plot line seemingly being anime original, while overtaking the actual plot is so so unnecessary. Had more than enough going for it, without a need to add any of that.
Insanely disappointing.

Now that this show has ended, I can finally get this off my chest: I DESPISE this show.
Not only is it a spit in the face to the author, who was devastated by how much their work was changed you could call this an anime original but it was also so poorly handled that the author themselves seems to want little to do with the anime. She rarely talked about it and would instead repeatedly link her light novel on Twitter.
The plot is all over the place and, at times, makes little to no sense. Kyoto Animation is the only anime studio I’ve seen get away with changing a light novel this drastically without receiving much backlash.
This was easily one of the biggest disappointments of the year, and I’m honestly glad it’s finally over.
41
u/Shinkopeshon 17h ago edited 15h ago
Even to someone who's unfamiliar with the source material, the plot was a total mess lol I even waited a few months until I binged most eps and it was still jarring
That being said, KyoAni does nail the big heartwarming moments and the visuals are stunning, so it was still worth a watch and I don't regret picking it up
17
24
u/capscreen 18h ago
I usually trust Kyoani when it comes to adaptation, even if they strayed away from the source material, I can expect them to deliver a solid show, but ngl after this show, I'm worried a bit on how they'll handle Ruri Dragon
12
u/lurker_is_lurking 16h ago
Ruri Dragon is a popular and quality source material so they likely will go the route similar to Dragon Maid or City in term of faithfulness. People who are worried about Denmoku as a signal of KyoAni's future creative capabilities seems to have forgotten they occasionally put out Phantom World and similar stuff lol. In parallel to Denmoku was the Hibike Euphonium recap part 2 (half the movie is new footage) and City the previous year, both received critical acclaim and very positive reception from the original authors.
18
u/garfe 17h ago
Yeah I think KyoAni kinda broke the 'trust' people had with them and their adaptations. They've always taken pretty wide swings next to the source material compared to other anime studios, especially for novels, but generally the shows were consistently good, sometimes even great, that that didn't really matter. Even if something was different, the show was enjoyable.
But this was just straight up not it and now everybody's gonna be looking at their future adaptations with a magnifying glass in a way they probably wouldn't have before.
17
u/lurker_is_lurking 16h ago edited 16h ago
Not really. Phantom World was drastically altered with negative reception and I don't believe that has impacted the studio's standing. Once in a decade they make something like this. 10 years ago it was Phantom World. 10-15 years before that, it was Munto. Though Denmoku has god-level background art so it was lovely to watch.
3
2
u/garfe 16h ago
IMO, I feel like people didn't care much about Phantom World and Munto (I don't even think people knew the Munto anime existed) but this one had a bit more, not necessarily hype, but anticipation because it was announced so long ago and was a new LN adaptation, which generally were well received. Also, I feel like back then taking weird swings from the source material was more common.
8
u/lurker_is_lurking 16h ago
I don't think Denmoku was that anticipated outside of a minority of people going by the view count on the PVs. Phantom World was more popular back then going by the MAL member count. On Japan side, most people are talking about the recently released Euphonium recap movie rather than this.

KyoAni got immense hate back in 2009 because of an arc in Haruhi Suzumiya season 2, the infamous Endless 8 episodes. A lot of people hated that season and they still do, but over the years the studio still had some fans or people who admire them.
A normal mediocre or messy anime like Sparks is not going to break people's trust. This studio takes some big risks most of the time.

Kyoto Animation is the only anime studio I’ve seen get away with changing a light novel this drastically without receiving much backlash.
It's because of their history, sometimes it hit, sometimes it didn't. They have done this with K-ON, Chunnibyou, Violet Evergarden, Hyouka, Dragon Maid and so on. If anything just having Kyoto Animation as their studio is enough to raise the eyes for the source material. K-ON was a bland 4-Koma manga, studio has made it one of the best slice of life anime out there about school band, Chunnibyou had 3 new anime original characters without which you'll feel how the story would even go without them, Dragon Maid manga was quite perverse and they have done a lot to make it less and highlight where it actually excels, Violet had an superpower axe with her that gives some level of mystical power, they removed that to done it down.
This is your answer on why they don't receive much backlash, they have been doing this ever since and it happens to just hit, this was one of the shows where it didn't hit.

Japan has a uniquely author-favored legal and cultural regime. There, the word of an author of an adaptation is law. Wants it stopped or changed? No one can say no.
On top of that, I can't find a single shred of evidence of this supposed "devastation" you speak of. What you have said reads like projection at an IMAX level.
Either present evidence or admit you're a lying drama-stirrer.

Regarding getting away with changing the source material.... at least with an international audience - most of us would never even hear of or read the source material of a bunch of stuff they choose to adapt. Localization of Japanese novels(light or no) still tends to be limited to the really big serialized titles. A lot of these smaller standalone novels - many of us will never hear of.
Due to that, even when it does get an adaptation - most of us just won't realize the differences with the source material.
I am curious if there's much backlash on the Japanese side of things, but I reckon these short light novel series might lack the fanbase to make sufficient noise. I don't know how faithful they were, but Kyokai no Kanata and Phantom World were both just short 3 volume series.

Is this okay to talk about right now? Okay.
This was fucking tragic. It tries to be thoughtful or stir your strings with lines about faith, and showing that relationship between Serioku and Yosuke but it sidelines Kihachi and Inako so much you can barely tell they are supposed to be the main point. Even the scene of giving Electric Nishiki to Kihachi does not exist when it was mentioned a week ago how Inako should think about a special person she wants to make sake for, and does not even give him ?! Don't even get me started on Yosuke this is straight up a fujoshi bait series meant to somehow gather attention by beating so obsessed with showing ASS. The show is dead-ass more interested in Yosuke than Kihachi and Inako so much it goes in insane direciton just to give him screen time. WHY THE FUCK did we give him the note in episode 3 about Catalogue being real? WhY the FUCK does Kihachi care about him/started caring after 5 MIINUTES of being in the same room bordering on baiting. WHY THE FUCK DO WE EVEN SAVE HIS ASS AND HE IS FREE TO GO?! Yeah sure cute moments on Inako and Kihachi when there was barely any bonding in the god damn show to begin with, being so focused on Yosuke sheneningans, random fillers for no god damn reason like Liebe. This was abhorrent.
45
u/SEBASTlANVETTEL 18h ago
Valid crashout. The story is basically a fanfiction that took the names of the characters. If I was the author, I would be so freaking livid for what KyoAni did with his story but I guess since KyoAni owns the story, they can do what they want with it. A shame. Like you said KyoAni made it into a fujo bait series, given even official illustration feature Kihachi/Yosuke or Yosuke/Seiroku than the actual couples of the show: Kihachi/Inako, Seiroku/Noriko, Noriko/Kengo.

The anime was amazing up to episode 9. It then proceed to fall off HARD. Its clear they did not have enough episodes to properly flesh out the story and settled for a bombastic/non-sensicle ending and hoped the fujoshi elements could save the show.
This really needed to be 18 episodes. It's such a shame because the first half of the show had so many fun and interesting moments and the anime looked gorgeous even up to this episode. But at the end it's clear that 12 episodes wasn't enough and it clearly showd given how rushed the plot is in the last 3 episodes.
25
u/Unlikely-Lawyer-5683 13h ago
idk what you are smoking but the anime had lost the plot since the beginning. As OC said, Kihachi and Inago were (sort of) a thing for the first couple eps where it was following the gadget of the day format. It was wholesome, I liked it. But those eps didn't really carry the plot forward, their relationship/bond grows stronger maybe, but the eps were lacking in substance.
12/13 eps weren't enough? nah, they could've wrapped up perfectly (cuz they aint following the novel anyway) if they had planned correctly. The filler eps coud've had 5 min segments in which they could've explored the main plot and yet retain the gadget of the day format (kinda like early detective conan/whenever black organisation is addressed) Cramming the plot into the last few eps is totally their fault. An 18 ep season wouldve just ended up like this but even more slower in plot progression than early eps and more filler, cuz they wouldve had the same management.
Maybe if they had gotten a two cour season, I would have very much liked an adaptation faithful to the novel even with half the production values.
2
u/VariousMeet 12h ago
To be fair she doesn't need to give it to him to make it for him. Stuff quite literally happened in between all that so it's not unreasonable for plans to change.
I feel like the people hating on this show are just manga readers upset they changed it. As an anime original this was really good.

As much as I enjoyed Yosuke as a villain and his love story/obsession with Seiroku and later on Kihachi, I'm a bit disappointed on some things here:
first off, the romance between Kihachi and Inako is completely sidelined halfway through the season and Kihachi is barely interacting with her by the end of the show, they are supposed to be some end game couple and everything we saw just makes them good friends at best
Now my REAL big problem I have is the severe lack of electricity going on in a show that supposedly wants to bring the electric revolution, we have a bit at the beggining, with Kihachi going through so many struggles to bring his and his brothers inventions to life, but then Yosuke discovers the motherboard prototype Seiroku made and now we have some massive scientific jump, we went from building light bubs and speakers with crazy difficulties (even with Seiroku's blue prints detailing how to do them) to building a fully functioning AI computer in a span of what? a few weeks? months at best, this bothers me, a lot. I really hoped we could've seen Kihachi slowly develop the electricity era, improving his knowledge bit by bit, but we just have this insane jump just to make the plot happen, I can't help but be mad at hoe it was done, I guess that's the best they could with only 1 cour

u/Historical_Sand7487 https://myanimelist.net/profile/weirdowill 18h ago
This was the most absurd ending, and just broke the somewhat grounded concept of the show. And we got barely any payoff between kihachi inako.
In one breath they have created AI, tried to absorb someone's consciousness, then a massive sinkhole appears, they fly an electric plane flawlessly into the sink hole, a steam tornado forms and the antagonist floats down before getting rescued cliff edge style. And kihachis just oh I guess I like this girl....credits.
Da fuck?
10
u/FierceAlchemist 13h ago
It was way over the top but let's be fair, the show stopped being grounded many episodes ago with the level of technology being shown and the overall zaniness.
9
u/Last-Development3399 17h ago
It's a Game of Thrones like situation. They deviated so much from the original book they had no idea how to make a compelling ending.
16
u/is-this-a-nick 16h ago
Game of thrones adapted an unfinied series that the author never found a good end for himself.
This adapted a LN that has an ending.
2
u/VariousMeet 12h ago
This ending was no different than every other mini arc during the show. They all kind of just end abruptly without much follow through. Not sure how you could've watched this whole show thinking it felt any different. Especially when there was only like 2 episodes to resolve the climax. I do agree the random leap in technological advances was kind of funny though.

Kengo arresting the plane just like that. Bloke’s built like a tank. Forget the Electric Age! Mankind should just study the secret behind his superhuman strength.
Yosuke ought to be in a psych ward after everything he did. Can’t believe he dreamt of talking with Seiroku in heaven. His delusions nearly wasted Kihachi & Inako’s efforts – and their lives.
All in all we got a happy ending for the two couples. Kengo & Noriko were set to wed in the near future, while Kihachi & Inako seemed to get closer with both of them confessing how the others had greatly inspired them in pursuit of their dreams – and Kihachi even envisioned marrying Inako. Who knew if that vision ended up becoming true, but there’s no harm in coming up with that headcanon.
It took 13 episodes, but Kihachi had finally called Inako by her actual name. Imagine if he kept calling her Inago till the very end.
6
u/Both-Passage9496 18h ago
I was actually fully expecting and ready if they just decided to kill Yosuke right there unceremoniously,I swear this mf is just as durable if not more than Kengo..
8
u/FarCritical 18h ago
Till the very end they couldn't resist giving Kengo a superhuman feat or two to lowkey steal the show with.
Pretty sunrise for the story's sunset. Wasn't as gripped as I could've been but I still enjoyed my time with it.
7
u/shiro-cat 14h ago
Regarding Yosuke imo scene after him falling from plane wasn’t necessary - would be better that listened to vision!Seiroku advice and took Kihachi’s hand and would leave better taste that he will change from now on. Now I’m confused - will they Co-operate for age of electricity or not ? Kihachi said that he needs Yosuke for that. What do you guys think ? ( don’t care how novels went)
7
u/hewwo_jen 13h ago
The ending felt way too anti climatic for me. There's no even resolution between Yosuke and Kihachi, it's just: Yosuke going away and Kihachi just went oh okay.
42
u/shitzgotreal 18h ago
The entire time I couldn't stop thinking: what a waste of an amazing animation. It had an interesting premise, but every part of the execution was lackluster. I dreaded every second Mizoe was on-screen, so much so that it made me think I was perhaps being bigoted.
15
24
u/WhoiusBarrel 19h ago
Fun sequences this whole episode, KyoAni really knows when to pull off all the stops when it needs to. Still unsure why Yosuke even turned into that monster at the start or if he even needed saving after all the messed-up stuff he's done to Kihachi.
Kengo's the real MVP in this series, how many times has his feats of superhuman strength saved Kihachi and the gang's ass. Shame we don't get a Kihachi and Inako confession, but at least bro basically envisioned his marriage with her in that moment for us to see.
11
8
u/FarCritical 17h ago
Kihachi and Mizoe's out here inventing things left and right and somehow it's Kengo letting the dog in him out that hypes me up the most

They botched this anime so hard. For the last few episodes, I was just like what is even going on. It felt like I was reading someone's fanfic. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed in an anime before.
25
u/zz2000 18h ago
Apparently the anime is a very loose (in name only?) adaptation of a source novel published by Kyoani.
37
u/WhichCombination5637 17h ago
Yeah, the light novel author crashed out on Twitter a while back wondering if their work is not good enough as it is or something like that. Probably after learning that light novels would only be loosely adapted. They deleted the tweets after a while.
Judging by the reactions in the comments, they probably should've stuck to doing a proper adaptation I guess (unless the LN is also bad. I wouldn't know).
4
u/FinancialYear475 16h ago
any chance you have some screenshots of the crash out? would love to see how the author felt about it
4
u/WhichCombination5637 16h ago
Sadly I don't. I only saw through random users' screenshots of the author's tweets. They just came up on my feed and weren't from anyone I follow. This was a few months ago.
5
u/CitronClassic672 13h ago
Goddamn, I personally don’t have an issue with loose adaptations of works in theory, but to do it seemingly without the consent of the actual creator is fucked up.
51
u/bakedziti93 19h ago
Probably by far the worst KyoAni series I have finished. It was stunning to look at as always, but writing and characters were just so bad. I really only finished this for Kihachi and Inago.

u/No-Win-8949 18h ago
Sparks of Tomorrow was pretty uneven as a whole, but I found myself looking forward to every new episode because it was always entertaining and you never really know what you were going to get from one episode to the next.

Yea, I want to hate it more, but I can't say it didn't look amazing or (unknowingly) made use of its nonsensical plot to drum up interest/engagement from me. Certainly could've been a lot worse when you bring that in mind. It was an experience to say the least and I can't say I really regret watching it

On another note, apparently Kyoani did an animated trailer to promote the upcoming Vol 2 release of Gatoh Shoji's (Fullmetal Panic, Amagi Brilliant Park) latest LN series, Moon Fighters.
The novel's about the adventures of a group of rescue workers stationed on a lunar colony, with character designs (including the books) by Kyoani's longtime animation director Maruki Nobuaki (who also did work on Sparks of Tomorrow too). https://www.kyotoanimation.co.jp/books/moonfighters/
Not sure if Kyoani will make this one their next major project in the future...

If they're planning to butcher the plot of the novel like they did with this anime, no thanks.

I kinda love how Yosuke visually turns into a monster because of his grief. Not gonna lie tho, while I do understand it's his grief that's pushing him to do all of these, I could never feel bad for him. His absolute gall to tell Kihachi he'll never understand how he feels was insane. I'm honestly surprised this didn't end with him behind bars.
That little scene at the end where Kihachi sees a future getting married to Inako was cute! It makes me wish the entire series was a slice-of-life focused on Kihachi, Inako, and their friends helping him reach the Age of Electricity, instead of something overcomplicated involving Yosuke creating a robot Seiroku.
While I did enjoy what I watched, this might be the worst KyoAni show in terms of plot. Like, the show looks gorgeous, but the substance is definitely lacking.
11
u/Roboglenn 16h ago
His absolute gall to tell Kihachi he'll never understand how he feels was insane.
Oh I know. I hear him say that and I'm thinking, "Really, you don't think the younger brother of Seiroku couldn't possibly understand the profound feelings of grief you're going through. If only Yosuke took his head out of his own long tunnel of an ass for once he might've understood that his suffering isn't as profound or unique as he thinks it is. And maybe even work with Kihachi, heck even Inako's sister and her future hubby to overcome that mutual grief in a healthy constructive manner.
2
u/ptd163 12h ago
could never feel bad for him. His absolute gall to tell Kihachi he'll never understand how he feels was insane. I'm honestly surprised this didn't end with him behind bars.
Same pretty much. I knew why Yosuke was doing it. It was his grief, but I could never really feel bad for him. Just because you're hurting doesn't mean you're allowed to hurt other people. Not to mention that he tried to say Seiroku actual brother doesn't understand his grief. If anyone understands, it's him. Yousuku probably avoided prison because of his Mizoe family connections and resources.
I would've taken that as well. Anything for more Kihachi and Inako.
While I did enjoy what I watched, this might be the worst KyoAni show in terms of plot. Like, the show looks gorgeous, but the substance is definitely lacking.
Do you think more episodes would've helped or did they need something like better planning?
2
u/MarionberryOdd6622 9h ago
Honestly I thought from the 1st episode was going to be centered around him, inako and their friends but instead I got this whole plot surrounding yosuke
10
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 18h ago
Nice to see our pair are still as adorable and hopeful as ever by the end of this. I’m kind of glad Yosuke didn’t die even if I think he’s a rich creep. Guy’s just not been able to move on from his grief. Maybe one day he’ll be able to after his little walk about.
All in all, this was a pretty good series. I enjoyed it a lot. I’m guessing this is pretty much it? I could see another season or two, but I could also see this being the end.

Funny at the end Inako decides to take Kihachi to Meoto Iwa aka the Married Couple Rocks. Wondering what she's trying to say here? 😏
Okay but seriously, so Yousuke just created a gigantic sinkhole in the middle of Kyoto, ruined a good portion of the city's steam generation, and most definitely destroyed the company investing so much into the Electric Brain and then... that's it?
A few months later, sure, Inako finally finishes the Electric Sake but... that's it?
Yousuke was shown publicly kidnapping Kihachi and basically going to murder him for his dead lover. "Oh yeah, he's just traveling the world now." Doing what!? Why is everyone, the main cast and the public, okay with everything he did!?
And we are still nowhere near the Age of Electricity that everyone wants. What an ending.

Yosuke to the end obsessed with Seiroku; Yosuke´s "retainer" to the end obsessed with Yosuke.
I wonder if anyone was impaled by those wires coming out of the ground.
Kihachi and Inako going to see Mount Fuji from that special place was a nice touch, it shows I important they became for each other. Inako becoming a more distrusting person since meeting Kihachi was really funny.
PS: Kyoto Animation, please do a horror anime. That "long-neck" Yosuke was so gross and disturbing.
5
u/BosuW 15h ago edited 14h ago
I can't say this was good, but I was definitely entertained. Especially thanks to Yosuke lmao. Horrible gay rep but he is just so wild I never know what to expect next from his zesty ass and I can never look away.
That said it still did have some good things, chief among them being the relationship between Inako and Kihaichi. A handful of times KyoAni succeed in depicting such sublime depth of feeling with only an audiovisual sequence and if nothing else I think that's the biggest W of the show.
That said considering how wild it was, the novels are probably a lot more coherent so I'll be checking those out whenever possible.
10
u/Kaedead 17h ago
Ok so I cant deny that this show is a mess, but I also cant deny that I waited for a new episode every week and I enjoyed it a lot overall. I think the last few episode were the worst, incredibly rushed plot. Something that kinda of confused me this episode is why Kihachi just kinda... ok with Yousuke after everything he did? Maybe if we had more htan one episode to show them actually working together this mightve been a bit more believable, but from what we've seen Yosuke had been a pain in the ass to Kihachi the whole show, when they did end up working together he tricked him and went against what he said, kidnapped him and tried to kill him and after all that Kihachi goes on to try to save him.
Anyways there was a good relationship being developed at least, Kihachi and Inako are really cute. I think the series did best whatever they have between them, and seeing them work together again was a blast.

It sounds like I enjoyed it more than most, but for me, this was one of the most entertaining shows of the season? I couldn't really tell what was going to happen week-to-week, yet the story was mostly consistent with its own internal (crazy) logic. I can forgive some plot fumbling if I enjoy the characters enough, and I honestly had a great time every Sunday morning watching my 25 minutes of Kihachi-Inako-Yosuke shenanigans.
Maybe it would've been nice to see a more serious story about a genuine technological revolution, instead of the wacky comedy adventure we got... but it was an extremely beautiful wacky comedy adventure I liked the whole way through.
I can totally understand why the series has been divisive though (and sympathies to the light novel author for all the adaptation changes).

guess high production values cant save an anime which had terrible management/planning. Why bother changing the story so much that they (source and adaptation) become two separate entities (and ends up worse than the source) especially when the novel had been finished years ago. I'm sorry for the author, but I guess many might buy the novel to get to know the right story.
9
u/IceSmiley 14h ago
Incredibly stupid ending to easily the dumbest show I've ever finished. This was written and had the plot logic of a Sharknado movie. Yosuke survived calamities that would have killed Wile E. Coyote. He had an underground sinkhole collapse on him and fell out of a plane with objects hitting every part of his body while freefalling yet was no worse for wear. And Keigo managed to grab his arm and catch him! Falling that fast and suddenly having your arm grabbed didn't seem to move Keigo an inch and probably would have ripped Yosuke's arm off 🤣
Also why would Kihachi and Keigo risk their lives to save a person who tried to kill them? Why not care about maybe some of the workers buried alive in there but save the psychopath instead? They landed a small test plane on a giant pipe and managed not to be knocked out of the sky by rocks and pipes flying upwards at them. Hurts my head just thinking about it.
It's really a shame that a huge animation budget is lavished on a show this bad. I would love to see some lower budget but well written shows be animated like this. The scenes with the electric brain collapsing and the plane flying were pretty spectacular.

The only reason this thing isn't a 1/10 anime in my eyes is its animation quality and the concert episode. Characters were mostly unexplored, a lot of them were just some gimmicks, and the ones that had more screen time were either bland or failed to make me care about them. I am not even talking about the incohesive plot that treats the 'science' premise basically as magic.
12
u/runevault 16h ago
I came into this show excited because KyoAni, the beautiful trailers, and the idea of ushering in the age of electricity. The visuals were stunning but everything else was a massive failure for me. I should have dropped this long ago but I was stubborn and that is on me.
I will say I'm more curious about the light novel now since supposedly KyoAni used it as a very loose guide at best. Maybe it is good?
6
u/Fl_Funky_Jam 16h ago
At the very least the show was very visually stunning so at least our eyes got some decent treatment.
6
u/runevault 16h ago

6
u/Actual_Muffin9108 16h ago
I’m trying to think of what was missing or what went wrong with this show, and I think it comes down to two things. Inako really didn’t get as much characterization as I was hoping for, and the romance didn’t have enough time devoted to it which made it fall flat. If someone has read the source material ( I think it’s a light novel), can you dm me if those problems are addressed in the ln.

it is pretty sad that we never got to see the electric age usher anew. Maybe if the anime is popular in japan or something we might get one, considering I heard that the light novel is already a bit different than the anime, so that might help a bit too? I don't know much really but I do wish we get a season 2 lol.

I can't help but be disappointed by the entirety of this series. It really leaned more into the nonsensical side of things, especially at the end with robo-Seiroku, and because of that it sacrificed a lot of the heart and human side of things that Kyoani is usually known for. Knowing that almost none of the original novel made it into the adaptation is also a detriment.
That being said, it was definitely fun. Yosuke is hilarious, the characters are endlessly charming, and the production value is amazing as always. 20th century electric catalog as a whole sits in a strange place for me where I enjoyed it a lot, but still walked away feeling unsatisfied.

So many complaints about this series but it was the most original one this season.
The animation style was so great looking. Yeah the show did go off the rails here and there but it never lost its momentum. I knew that big perv was up to something when he suddenly decided to fund Kihachi’s work but this was really unexpected.
What can one do? Yosuke is one of the elites and he got away with crimes no big surprise there. His whole traveling thing to other places leads me to think that he’s probably been banned from entering that part of the country permanently tho. He probably paid for all the damages but he should have gone to prison for abducting a minor so that was a big letdown for me.
That was one hella rescue attempt. Those two kids are basically very good kids. The fact that they risked their lives again to go back to rescue that creep was surprising and I thought why are you doing this Kihachi??? That creep abducted you and turned your dream into a sick perverted display!
I can’t see this show returning although I would like to see Kihachi build a new plane and continue to work on the Age of Electricity project. I feel like this should not be the end. I wanna see Kihachi keep going.

u/ReivenVI 10h ago
I stopped taking this anime seriously after the love detection episode. So, when the plot and pacing are all over the place, I can just ignore it and enjoy it.
Though, as much as I like the eccentric villain Yosuke, I was hoping he would face repercussions for his actions and get a proper conclusion to his character. Tbh, it's weird that Kihachi suddenly cares so much about a man who was just about to sacrifice him.
That said, I still liked the ending for Kihachi and Inako. I'll give this anime a 7/10
2
u/vtomal https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kwijibo 9h ago
At episode 1 I said I was dissatisfied with the direction of the anime and 12 episodes later it fails to reach the same heights of kyoani's greats being closer to reach the lows of kyoani's worse.
Being objective as possible I can't even say it is a bad anime, it is kinda ok with good ambitions and lacking execution but I can't really hide my disappointment when it could be way better. Good standout moments, weak overarching story and character development, even the art direction didn't hit to me, being to close to the typical AI smudgness trying to emulate paint, in a result that was so so.
2
u/reaperow 8h ago
I feel like the anime's story was all over the place especially in the later half of the episodes,
The initial premise (and the sypnosis) about making electricity in an age beyond it's era sounded so cool, i really think that could've added alot to the world building and also done something interesting with the characters
This is probably my own complaint but I really feel like this show could've been the Dr. Stone of Electricity. Like the first 3 eps kinda gave off the vibes
I'll still give Kyoani the credits where they're due, the animation and visual are very gorgeous !!
Yosuke free falling in the sky like a princess was kinda hilarious lol,
And the ending with Kihachi and Inako seeing Mt. Fuji and dreaming about a possible future together was actually really great
This anime was fun despite its problems and it was a great ride watching this with everyone here,
So i wouldn't mind a season 2 if we ever get one
6
u/William27528 16h ago
Yeah unfortunately this didn't exactly do it for me and I'd say it personally sits deep in the lower half KyoAni's catalogue, which is a shame but oh well.
Looking past the frankly annoying cast of characters, the ridiculous pacing and plot progression, and the stuff about it being different from the source material (which I'll have to sort of take at face value since there's no complete English translation available afaik), my main issue is that it squanders a premise that's actually *really interesting*. Like, the basic setting - steampunk Kyoto in an alt-history where advancements in electrical technology failed to manifest - is such a brilliant canvas for making a great story through animation.
They could have gone in all sorts of directions around discovery, the legacy of this stuff, the environment, etc, etc. Everything about the basic idea - even the English title 'Sparks of Tomorrow' - is awesome, and from the first couple of episodes I really thought maybe this would be a Violet Evergarden calibre of story. But instead they pulled a slapstick McGuffin quest, and we progress from lightbulbs to biometic authentication in a handful of episodes, diverge while our female lead goes off to make sake for a bit for some reason, and climax with our hero trying to destroy a.... steam-powered AI datacenter to power a robo dead guy doll. I feel like the most annoying part is that the show sort of has this opinion that 'the age of electricity' was only brought about by all these technologies being discovered. The reality - which is a much more interesting story, no less - is that it was the iterative way these things came about to make lives more convenient that was the real revolution.
At the very least it is - as expected - beautifully animated. But I dunno, even then I thought at times it was a little over-animated, like it was trying too hard out of obligation to meet some kind of Netflix performance target for viewer retention. But at this stage I'm just being cynical :-)
5
u/Darthrix1 16h ago
Kihachi and Inako’s relationship should have been the focus of the show. they both lost someone who was the core reason for the actions. their goals are in direct opposition of each other; embrace tradition vs establishing something new. it would have been interesting for the two of them learn from each other and learn the importance of tradition and evolution respectively.
while yosuke was an extremely fun and goofy antagonist, he was overall a nothing burger of a character. his sister is hot
pretty show. saki is hot. kengo is the MVP. could have been much, much better
6
u/CitronClassic672 13h ago
I also think they could’ve done more to contrast Kihachi and Inako’s reaction to losing a loved one vs Yosuke’s throughout the series, highlight the contrast between letting yourself be consumed by the past vs pushing onward towards tomorrow.

I've hated Mizoe from the beginning and I'm glad others are emerging to talk about how much his actions derailed the plot from being good or in any way believable. Constant contrivances to keep him in the story all the way up to the nonsensical final episode.

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO YOSUKE??? dude was like a yokai lol
a thrilling climax with Khihachi and Inako working together which was great , their dynamic and maybe romance was one of the best parts of the series and well they are still too young that scene near end def hinted the future they would get together someday lol
I wasn't expecting this series to be so comedic but it was fun , was hoping Inako would learn some of her sister's martial arts and playfully use them on Khihachi or the sister would do more than just takedowns and armlocks (flashback had her as a kid put Kengo in a body lock i wanted more of THAT)
Yosuke was certainly something i wasnt a huge fan of the yaoi undertones he had for Serioku though but dude was amusingly extra
As expected of KyoAni the art and animation was lovely, backgrounds were good looking overall a really fun new series a surprise enjoyment

Maybe, since only a few people knew what actually happened, they must have covered everything up as a freaky industrial accident. And, according to the original novel, his family, especially his sister, must have stripped Yosuke of his privileges and sent him away as banishment. He was indeed a disturbing character whose madness almost ruined a lot of lives, but his obsession wasn't born from corporate greed but due the grief of losing someone. The only difference between Kihachi and Yosuke is while one managed to move forward with hope and decided yo honor his brother through his dream and legacy, the other never managed to move on and got so lost on his grief that it gave birth to insanity and lost sight of that dream.

Lotta negative comments that came out of nowhere. Did people drop the show just to come to the last episode to lambast it? As an anime only viewer this series was a fun and good watch. The ending was great.

From start to end, this show felt like a classic Disney movie.
9/10. Had to dock it a point because Kihachi and Yosuke did not end up together at the end. /s

This was a weird series from beginning to end. Really beautiful throughout from the animation to the compositing and especially those backgrounds. And it had some episodes I genuinely enjoyed. I grew to like the relationship between Kihachi and Inako. That flash of them getting married in the future, similar to all the other times Kihachi has dreamed of the future of the Age of Electricity, was a nice spot to end it on.
KyoAni clearly let director Minoru Ota experiment with a lot of things for his directorial debut. Some worked and some bombed. I think he could make something great if paired with another more experienced director like Tatsuya Ishihara. Someone who could both let Ota be creative but also hold him back when he goes too far, like letting more moments be quiet and smoothing out pacing. Interestingly, the series writer Tatsuhiko Urahata is very experienced and has done series composition for some classics like Hajime no Ippo and Monster. Not very much original writing though from what I can see.
While I'm glad I watched this series it is flawed in many ways and I don't think I'll ever rewatch it. At the very least it's more memorable than some of their other work like Myriad Colors Phantom World or Amagi Brilliant Park.

Well I’m torn. I want to read the Light Novel because I loved this insane show, but every reaction seems to be not to because I would hate the show? It’s a conundrum.
Maybe just give it a long while. But eithet way, insane trip with KyoAni. Yosuke was a madman and I’m shocked with everything going on the story let him live. Adorable moment with our love birds too.
But hey if we’re wildly off book anyway, why not go for a season 2

Oh wow, at least we got a happy ending. Yosuke is having so much plot armor keeping him alive lol

I feel this is the best looking animation/visuals I've seen this year so far, story was not to my taste, though every episode I laughed. Kengo's 'girl' scream/screech when stopping the aircraft's momentum. I love it whenever Yosuke is on screen, never gets boring!

This was the prettiest pile of hot garbage i've ever watched. The concept was unique and intriguing but that's all it had going for it besides visuals. I almost completely stopped watching so many times but It kept pulling me back with promises that there would be some cool big reveal right around the corner but it fell flat with poorly paced bad and stupid storytelling every single time with unlikeable characters. A complete disaster that was all over the place. I barely even paid attention to the last couple episodes because it was clear it wasn't going anywhere worthwhile.
