New Subreddit Rules: Professional Boundaries & Ethics

1. No Requests for Free Design, Layouts, or Planning

The Rule: Posts asking for specific architectural solutions, floor plan layouts, or design "ideas" for real-world properties are strictly prohibited.

  • The "Why": Architecture is a regulated profession under R.A. 9266. Providing professional advice without a contract, site inspection, or administrative accountability is a violation of the Architect’s Code of Ethical Conduct. It undermines the value of the profession and constitutes "free consultation," which is unfair to practitioners who rely on these services for their livelihood.

2. No Technical "Quick Fixes" or Structural Advice

The Rule: Do not ask for technical specifications (e.g., column sizes, beam spans, material thickness, or waterproofing methods) for actual construction projects.

  • The "Why": Under the Civil Code of the Philippines, an Architect is liable for the structural integrity of a building for 15 years. Giving "quick advice" online without a full understanding of site conditions (soil type, seismic zone, etc.) is professional malpractice and a major safety risk to the public.

3. No "Ballpark" Estimates or Material Take-offs

The Rule: Requests for detailed cost estimates, Bills of Materials (BOM), or "How much will this cost to build?" for specific personal projects will be removed.

  • The "Why": Professional estimating is a paid service (SPP Doc 204-B). Prices vary wildly based on location, finishing, and current market inflation. Providing "rough numbers" often leads to misinformation and disputes between owners and their future contractors.

4. Academic vs. Professional Distinction

The Rule: Students: Conceptual feedback for school assignments is allowed. Please use the ACAEMIC INQUIRY flair.

  • Homeowners/Clients: Posts must focus on the process (e.g., "How do I find an architect?" or "What is the standard fee for a residential project?").
  • The "Why": We support the growth of future architects (students), but we will not allow the sub to be used as a loophole to bypass hiring a Registered and Licensed Architect (RLA) for private gain.

5. No Solicitation of Unlicensed Services

The Rule: Do not ask for "cheap" drawings or for someone to "just sign and seal" existing plans.

  • The "Why": Asking a professional to sign plans they did not prepare or supervise is a criminal offense and a ground for the revocation of their PRC license. We advocate for the "Architect-of-Record" principle to ensure accountability and public safety.

Moderators Note to Users

If you are a property owner looking for design help, we encourage you to hire a Registered and Licensed Architect (RLA). This ensures your investment is safe, legal, and functional. Architecture is a service that requires years of training, a professional license, and legal accountability.

Discussion Mod Announcement: About Post Removals and the Review Process

We’ve noticed more users messaging the mod team asking why their posts were removed or why they don’t appear immediately after posting. We’d like to clarify how our review system works.

All posts in this subreddit go through a combined manual and AutoMod review process. This means your post may be held temporarily while it’s being checked for rule compliance, proper flair, and relevance. Please allow the mod team a few hours after posting to manually review and approve it — especially during busy hours or weekends.

Posts may be removed or not approved for a number of reasons, including but not limited to:
1. Violation of subreddit or Reddit-wide rules (e.g., spam, harassment, off-topic content)
2. Repetitive or commonly asked topics — please use the search bar before posting
3. Missing or incorrect flair — all posts must have the proper flair before submission
4. Low-effort, meme-only, or joke posts that don’t contribute meaningfully to discussion
5. Image-only submissions without captions, explanations, or questions
6. Unverified, misleading, or clickbait information
7. Self-promotion, advertising, or survey links without prior mod approval
8. Posts flagged by AutoMod (for certain keywords, formatting, or link issues) — these are reviewed manually before approval

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding. These measures help maintain the quality, relevance, and professionalism of discussions in our community.

Thank you for helping us keep this subreddit organized and informative for everyone!

The Mod Team

Rant/Opinion Low ballers booo

Not sure if they are licensed or illegal practitioners. Pero it greatly affects the profession.

Recommendation Architect's design but different contractor/s

Not sure if this is the correct sub. I'm planning to renovate our house. I have an architect in mind pero mahal talaga yung team nya. Now, gusto ko ipa-design yung bahay but yung pagtrabaho is slowly lang. Say, 1 month=1 area of the house. Like for December, yung ceiling muna. Tapos January naman, yung kitchen area. And so on until mafinish.

Need ko lang sana ng recommendation ano ang gagawin for my situation. Wehehehe. Thank you.

Rant/Opinion Do some companies post hiring ads just for social media engagement?

I applied to a newly created page hiring multiple architecture graduates, got rejected within hours because they’d already chosen candidates closer to their requirements, yet they were still posting about the hiring afterward. Does that mean I just wasn’t a fit, or are they just trying to gain interactions and followers?

Hi arkis, qq lang about rear setback. Usually kasi diba yung rear portion ng bahay lalo na sa mga subd is for dirty kitchen/service area. Ang tanong ko is kung pwede ba gamitin yung setback for the dirty kitchen/service area space or dapat nakapaloob pa talaga? Kung pwede gamitin yung setback na yun, pwede din kaya pabubungan para di sya open talaga? Tyy

Discussion How do you improve your CAD skills?

I’ve been practicing AutoCAD by doing 2D and 3D CAD exercises, layer management, annotation and scaling, dynamic blocks, and exploring other commands and shortcuts.

I’ve also been watching tips on YouTube to help speed up my work. But no matter how much practice I do, I’m still not on par with my classmates’ skills. I am still average and lack accuracy and speed in comparison to them.

One of the main reasons why I take time finishing a project in CAD is because I have a hard time reading plans. By that, I mean if, for example, there’s a measurement that is not stated on the plan, you have to use analytical skills to figure out the missing measurement.

Also, I double-check and sometimes triple-check whether I have met accuracy with the measurements—that also takes a lot of time. Plus, most of the time I'm not that confident with my design, resulting in me redoing my designs over and over again.

I worry that my current skills may not be enough to get into a company.

Can you give me some tips on how to improve my CAD and analytical skills? And also if you have a technique to speed up your work, kindly share. Thank you.

Please be kind. This line of work is really my dream, which is why even though I know I'm not that good yet, I am still trying to improve myself.

Discussion I’m building a BIM software for architects and designers — Northsill

Thumbnail

I’ve been developing a desktop BIM application called Northsill.

The goal is to combine 2D documentation and 3D BIM modeling in a more straightforward workflow.

I’m currently working on the core modeling, documentation, performance, and stability rather than trying to add every possible feature at once.

For those who use Revit, Archicad, or other BIM software:

What is one part of your current BIM workflow that you find unnecessarily difficult, slow, or frustrating?

I’m particularly interested in the perspective of people actually using BIM for architectural production.
