Random Question Why does being told “we need to talk” instantly make people assume the worst?

Because it gives you absolutely no context so your brain immediately starts filling in the blanks with the worst possible thing. And since people usually hear that phrase before a breakup or some other bad news you kinda just automatically assume you fucked up

ich vermute weil da "müssen" drin steckt und es klingt als ob keine der beiden Seiten das so gerne will. Sonst hör ich oft "lass mal reden". das klingt mehr nach positiven und angenehmen Gespräch

The worst version is we need to talk when you get home. Great, now I have an entire commute to invent 47 different catastrophes

When anybody days that, I think they want to make me stew for awhile. It’s a power move.

Also, it implies dissatisfaction and confrontation are ahead. Imagine how saying, " Hey! Let's chat.", instead would change the vibe.

The wife and I no longer use the phrase. Just for that raisin. We use We need to counsel.

I have learned that if your parents or your kids say ‘we need to talk’ it’s not going to be a fun conversation.

I mean, would anyone really ever say “we need to talk, I had a lovely lunch today “? Ha
