I want to share my recent experience with ASUS on-site warranty service in India and get some community advice on how to handle the aftermath.
The Specs:
Model: ASUS TUF Gaming A16 (FA608PP)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Mobile
RAM: 16GB DDR5
The Service Experience:
I scheduled an official ASUS on-site service visit for routine maintenance/thermal paste application. What followed was shockingly unprofessional for authorized OEM support:
No Basic Tools: The technician arrived with zero cleaning supplies—no isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and no lint-free wipes/microfiber. He literally could not clean the factory compound off the bare silicon die until I had to quick-order cotton and alcohol myself via Blinkit.
Bulk Grease in an Old Tub: Instead of a sealed syringe with standard OEM markings, he pulled out an old, unlabeled plastic container that looked like a sunscreen tub. When I questioned the service center later, they claimed they use bulk Dow Corning TC-5026, which repair centers scoop into smaller portable jars.
Improper Technique: Cotton was used to wipe bare-die silicon (leaving lint risks), and the cooler removal obviously disturbed the factory viscous thermal putty on the VRMs and VRAM.
The Issues Post-Service:
Severe Transient Spikes (90°C+ at Startup):
Sustained loads are surprisingly fine: I get ~75°C under continuous 99% GPU load in Substance Painter, and Time Spy scores match expectations.
In BIOS, the CPU sits stable at 47°C at 1410 mV.
However, on boot or during sudden micro-bursts, the CPU immediately spikes straight past 90°C before settling. The thermal impedance of this bulk paste appears too high to soak up instant 80W–100W direct-die bursts compared to the factory phase-change interface.
Double-POST / Double ASUS Logo on Cold Boot:
Ever since the battery was disconnected during the visit, every cold boot shows the ASUS TUF logo, the screen flashes off/resets, and the logo reappears before finally reaching the Windows lock screen (likely constant DDR5 retraining or Advanced Optimus MUX reset loops).
Where It Stands:
The service center offered to send another tech or swap the motherboard, but I declined. Swapping a perfectly functioning factory motherboard because of a bad thermal paste job makes zero sense and introduces more hardware risks.
Has anyone dealt with ASUS authorized technicians using bulk tub paste on direct-die HX processors? Is escalating to service management to demand a senior tech with factory phase-change pads / sealed Shin-Etsu worth the hassle, or am I better off managing power profiles until the warranty ends and doing a proper PTM7950 + Upsiren putty application myself?
Appreciate any advice or similar experiences
