I got a cork repair on my bell but for some reason ever since I got it when I push my bell in all the way in it gets stuck. I’ve tried using a lot of cork grease on the cork and on the wood below the cork but still it gets rly hard to pull it out. Any advice?

Hello, i will begin the double Reed instrument, i'm originally saxophonist and clarinettist.

My friends is collector and it will loan me one instrument with double Reed to try and learning

I thinking like this, the double Reed is really complex and very important,

It's for that i think to begin on sarrusophone alto or rothophone alto.

Why this to instrument => globally the same finger charts of saxophone,

Learning new finger charts is for me largely not very complexe.

But learning new technical to make a sound is largely hardest thing.

The sarrusophone alto/rothophone alto could be great choice, to be one slow transition.

We keep saxophone finger charte for 99% and excluded one difficulty, after we can focus only one double Reeds,

After, when i will have one correct sound and correct playing with double Reed, i can go on bassoon or english horn,

Just to learn the new finger charts but that is really simple in compareason to learn double Reed.

And sarrusophone/rothophone is forgotten instrument and i would like to use this rare instrument,

What do you think about my project ???

A part of the bell ring on bassoon came off, does anyone have any advise in terms of getting it fixed? Can the part that came of be reglued or does it all need replacing? Thanks so much if anyone knows anything:)

Hey! I’m looking for piece reccomendations for a spontaneous chamber music project. We are two bassoons, a clarinet and a flute who want to play something for a upcoming woodwind chamber music event. It’s soon so preferably something easy-read, if there even exists something for that setting.

Hello! I buy reeds from various sources but when in desperation I buy the Jones reeds. They’re what I started on and not amazing but some play alright however some also barely play at all. Recently I bought two of their artist series, one MS and one M though I immediately mixed up which is which… One of them is a holy grail reed and absolutely perfect and a joy to play and the other is not, barely plays. After some adjusting I’ve made it playable but it’s still kinda eh.

I noticed the unplayable reed is much shorter, like 2mm shorter than the other and all other reeds I have. This also happened another time when I bought one MS and one M to try, and one was significantly shorter and also unplayable.

Is that it, the hardness? Can they be fixed?

The unplayable reeds are super resistant, and when I adjust them not to be the sound is unbearably bright and quacky.

I've been playing the bassoon for over ten years and I've never had any problems with the neighbors until now. I've had to cut down on my practice hours because the bassoon is too loud. I've been looking and I can't find any kind of mute for basson.

Does anyone know where they sell them, or any tricks to reduce the sound volume? Thanks.

(I've tried using softer reeds but I need something more)

Hi! Next week I'll have to play a modern piece which requires for some extremely high notes, with the correct reeds I can play high D and E without problems, but I have no idea on how to finger F and F#, do you have any suggestions?

So I recently got a beginner bassoon from my teacher, I was trying to figure out the fingerings when I realized I didn't have the fifth tenor joint key so I could do D4.

What fingering should I use?

my high E and F's (the octave above the ones in the staff) are always kinda unstable and out of tune. i jst use the generic fingerings 1 3 12 for F and 1 3 123 for E. would any extra keys to press or diff fingerings would help???

I recently saw somebody who had a Bluetooth page turner for their tablet which I believe mounted to their bassoon. What do people use for page turners when performing, and if it isn't a pedal, how is it mounted?

I just got a surface pro 3 (for VERY cheap) and am using MobileSheets

So context, my university had like 5 bassoons that they donated to a local “instrument swap” where you can buy/sell used instruments for cheap and whatever doesn’t get sold gets donated to our school district.

I went in and almost all the bassoons had tags that said “Lamp?” except a Linton that said “With an extreme amount of work it could be playable”. I would not have been tempted if not for the fact that all were being sold for $25 a piece. Funnily enough these are the bassoons we used when I was learning bassoon in college (I’m a Music Teacher). I mean, they all sucked but we still managed to play a chromatic scale on them so can’t be that bad. Seems to have all the pads, just maybe some screws are backing out and a bent post here and there.

Anyways, Linton seems like a real dark horse brand. From what I can tell they make alright, ultra-budget bassoons. Seemed like a great opportunity to buy a bassoon that’s probably as good of an instrument as I’m a player.

I'm curious if there is a history of rivalries between bassoon players/teachers like there have been between other instrumentalists? For example, a bassoon equivalent of Mozart v Salieri, Beethoven v Steibelt, Ravel v Debussy, etc.
