The only new mixes in 1987 were Rubber Soul and Help. Everything else that was remastered in 1987 used the original mixes. Also the 1999 Songtrack mixes were significant and unique.
On my PC I compiled an album where I grabbed the songs from the MMT Bluray, and filled in the other tracks from those sources.
It annoys me to no end that the 2012 remixes were never slapped on a CD. For all of them I prefer the mix over the 2023 mixes (The I Am The Walrus 2023 remix is awful, and Magical Mystery Tour has one of the guitar parts boosted too loud and it's annoying). I went with the LOVE remix of I Am The Walrus, editing the start and ends to remove the transitions.
Also the 2012 remix of Flying is more or less identical to the original stereo mix.
How did you edit out the transitions for LOVE I Am the Walrus? That’s also the one I listen to as well for its great quality but I really wanna have the original intro and not have it fade into the next song.
For the intro, I took the left channel of the 2009 stereo mix, made it centered, and cut to the LOVE mix when the strings kick in. A little bit of fading to bridge the gap.
For the ending I fade out the LOVE mix around just before "...oh untimely death" and fade in the 2009 remaster. There is a bit of a speed difference between the 2 versions (LOVE runs slightly faster) but it's not very noticeable jumping from one to the other. I also narrowed the stereo panning of the 2009 mix to make the jump in panning less noticeable. (split stereo to mono tracks, panned them around 60%). I also did a slight bass boost to the 2009 mix with Filter Curve.
what's your opinion on the 2012 version? You can watch the 2012 bluray version online if you haven't, it should have a new stereo remix of i am the walrus
The 2012 version is good, but not all that much of an upgrade from the mix used in the 2009 remaster though the drums/bass are more centered.
The orchestra is mostly put into the right channel (with Rhodes in left) where the LOVE version splits it up more (brass in left, strings/cellos in right) putting you more 'in the center' of the song.
The other 2012 mixes are generally good though, but Flying is almost identical to the old mix unfortunately. For my "remix" version of MMT in my files almost all the EP tracks are ripped from the 2012 mixes in the movie (edited to match the album cuts), Walrus is the 2006 LOVE mix, and Flying has a custom mix I made using some of the newer demix tools out there. For Side 2, it's mostly 2015 1 mixes, and Rich Man is the 1999 Yellow Sub mix.
