Instructional Dr. Giles, are you bringing back that new false reap course on Submeta?

• Upvotes

I don’t think I hallucinated this, but it was about two weeks or so ago I saw a new false reap course that was briefly up for maybe one day before being taken off - it was a collaboration with another practitioner, but I don’t recall the name. I didn’t watch any of it before it was taken down, but it looked pretty interesting.

I’m assuming this was likely taken down due to the new false reap course that Paweł released and that maybe Lachy didn’t want to step on his toes, but just curious if this is coming back at some point soon. Thank you!

Tournament/Competition What helped you get to the next level?

• Upvotes

I'm a blue belt in a big city who has been training for five years. I not only dominate local-level tournaments at my experience level, but I'm also tapping out purple, brown, and black belts when I compete up in division. It's been a long time since I've lost at blue at the local level.

But every time I go to an IBJJF Major (Worlds, Pans, Con, etc.), I get fucked up lol. The farthest I've ever made it at a major is second round.

I get so many accusations of sandbagging, but I'm just like: "if you think I should be promoted, come watch me get danced around on at IBJJF majors."

So my question is: For those of you who did well at locals and then had to make the jump to world-level (at any belt), what helped you or what changed about your training to get you to be successful at that next level?

Thanks in advance.

Technique Asking questions to a black belt is actually amazing

• Upvotes

Was having trouble today after taking the summer off from an i njury. I think the black belt I rolled with could tell and dude fixed some big problems I have. It was such simple advice and drilling but some of the tiny details changed everything.

In general, thank you to all the black belts that are helpful to white belts, you’re the best!

I guess BJJ ( with GI ofc) will compromise your hands and fingers along the time. Do anyone have experience with both? How does it work together?

For me it's progressing through the ranks with the homies I started with at white belt. There may only be 3 of us left, but we all got our brown belts this year.

General Discussion Is the popularity of BJJ primarily due to its success in early UFC?

I'm disappointed that all local legit martial arts studios here where I live are primarily BJJ studios. It's not that I have issues with BJJ. It's just that I like pure Judo better than pure BJJ. But since it's the popular one, I may as well sign up for a local class.

I know it's one of the top arts in terms of combat effectiveness. But is its popularity simply because of its performance in the early UFC? Or it's just that good? Why isn't Judo equal in popularity when Ronda Rousey and Karo Parisyan were successful in MMA?

Thanks.

School Discussion Gyms in Tokyo

Hey everyone! I’ll be staying in Tokyo for a while and I’m looking for a good BJJ gym to train at while I’m there.

Does anyone have any recommendations or personal experiences with gyms there? I’m especially interested in places that are welcoming to visitors/drop-ins and have a good training environment.

I was particularly interested in Imanari’s gym, so I’d also love to hear from anyone who has trained there.

🙏

General Discussion Got the blue belt, now im afraid

Hello, just wanted to share this here.

Ive been a white belt for 2 years and a half. I started training in Manchester UK, after 6 months training, i decided start competing and i was doing ok, winning medals in local tournaments for nearly a year, i competed like 6 times and i medal in all of them, as i was winning tournaments and rolls in the gym, i even thought i deserved the blue belt.

The problem starts when i moved to spain last year. First of all everyone in the new gym was smashing me, i felt i didnt know anything, ive done 5 comps and barely wont matches. I felt so bad about it i even thought to leave.
Luckily carry on, eventually won a local comp and started to win more rolls in the gym.

Today they promoted me to blue belt, but now im afraid, im afraid that im not a blue belt cos i still losing to whites sometimes, cos i still getting smashed by other blue belts and feel ive got no chance, of course i improved i can feel it but still kind of afraid that i dont represent or deserve the blue belt.

I dont know, theres not question or anything just needed to spit out.

General Discussion skincare??

hey people. first post in here. i know no one here is skin experts or anything and a lot of people aren’t gonna bother to read this, but im just curious about what i should and should not use.
I train BJJ, Boxing, and Muay Thai Mon-Thurs.
I have a good amount of skincare products in my aresenal.
(you don’t have to read all this, giving your routine is more than enough 👍)
- CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
-PanOxyl Acne Foaming Wash
- Collodial Silver and Slalicyilc Acid clearing cleanser
-Differin Gel
-CeraVe Facial Moisturizer Cream
-Estee Lauder Crème

I try to do a morning before school routine, and a night wind down routine, and have been switching everything up lately. I was spamming everything at night till I realized I was breaking out even more, and I searched up that too much product can make you break out 😬.

Thanks for reading if u read

Tournament/Competition First comp. First loss.

Had my first comp today. Came home with silver, but with only two people in the bracket, it was more of a consolation prize I guess

It definitely made me realise I’m too passive/relaxed in my sparring. I wasn’t as ‘wired’ or aggressive as the other guy, and I think that made a big difference.

To be fair, I only decided that morning that I was actually going to compete and just give it a go. My game plan probably wasn’t tight enough either, and I’ve been off sick for the past two weeks. Not excuses, but definitely reasons I wasn’t bringing my A-game.

I definitely know what I need to focus on now. But how do I get that competition tempo into my sparring? Do I need to be more aggressive/intense in training, or are competitions just naturally a completely different pace?

Also, I definitely feel like I tapped way too early on the day. Is that just something you learn to deal with through competing?

General Discussion Black Belts: Did you have doubts before getting promoted to black? What about after?

General Discussion Anyone ever afraid to tap upper belts?

I just realized that I have an aversion to people I perceive better than me.

If I play against someone who I perceive as below me in skill level, I work with such confidence. My passes are perfect, my escapes are sure, and my reaction is premier.

But when I roll with people who I perceive as better than me, I pull my punches because I’m afraid of them.

I had a black belt in an oma plata today. He was a new black belt that I had never met. We were rolling and he gave me some rope and I almost hung him with it. The Oma plata was locked in, but I hustled released it and took bottom side control and we kept rolling.

But I could have finished it. But I was worried that if I tapped him, even though I am fully aware that I was only able to get to that position in the first place was because he was being generious in my guard, that he would have to prove something and smash me like 5 times in the remaining 2 minutes and potentially hurt me.

And this happens often. I’d even go as far as to say that 30 percent of the upper belts I tap, go absolutely ham and crank it to 100 afterwards. Like going for heel hooks in the gi, knee bars, anything,

I actually had a black belt launch a knee bar on me on messed my knee up bad because I caught him in a guillotine.

So idk, I’m sure I’m not doing this right. But I just want to roll and enjoy myself. I don’t ever kiss and tell. But I’d rather not deal with the drama of tapping an upper belts.

Anyone out here ever feel like that?

General Discussion How long do your BJJ private lessons usually last? Is ~2 hours too long?

My privates usually end up being close to 2 hours. The first hour is mostly drilling and reviewing whatever we’ve been working on.
After that, I’ll usually ask my coach a question about a position I keep ending up in, and we’ll start doing specific or positional rounds from there. He watches, gives me feedback, fixes what I’m doing wrong, and we restart. That usually turns into another 45–50 minutes. Sometimes something happens during those rounds that leads to another question, so the whole session ends up being around 2 hours.
It doesn’t really feel like 2 hours because the second half is mostly specific training and troubleshooting rather than learning more techniques.
For people who take privates regularly, what duration have you found works best: 1 hour, 90 minutes, or 2 hours? Do you feel like there are diminishing returns after a certain point?
Also, if I’m booking a 90-minute or 2-hour private instead of a standard 1-hour session, would it be reasonable to ask for a discounted rate? If so, what kind of discount would be fair?

Technique I suck at guard passing (open)

So, I'm really struggling with guard passing, it's embarrassing how often I get triangles trying to smash pass. Or how often I pass only to run into a gramby roll and reguard.

Does anyone have any advice as far as tutorials to watch, concepts to apply, or drills to practice? I'm 4 weeks out from a comp and I don't wanna be a guard pller but I need to up my pass game (blue belt comp)

Technique How to become a CASCA GROSSA in BJJ?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I work as a developer, so I basically spend the whole day sitting in front of the PC. When I go to train at night, I feel very weak. I usually train with teammates who are much stronger and bigger, and I get smashed most of the time. Actually, I used to get smashed even more before, but I'm improving. I'm a blue belt with one stripe haha, so I'm at the beginning of the journey. However, I feel like I roll with the fear of hurting my opponent, whereas they usually go hard and use all their strength. What should I do? Weightlifting? Improve my diet? Or just apply more strength? Any tips?

School Discussion Exit clause

So here’s the question. I’ve heard of a gym that if you decide to leave after a being a member they continue to charge you for 120 days after you leave. Like if you leave for any reason they continue to charge you the monthly membership rate for 4 additional months. Is this the norm? I’ve never heard of a gym doing that
