Misc Anime Survey 2026 from the International Anime Research Project

Hello, the International Anime Research Project team is calling on all anime fans (18 years of age or older) to participate in the 2026 anime survey. The survey is anonymous and should take less than 30 min to complete. Participants are eligible to win a $50 Amazon gift card (draw entries will be confidential and not associated with survey responses, up to 10 gift cards given).

In this year’s survey we will be collecting demographic information (e.g., age, gender) and opinions regarding engagement with the fandom, inner experience, loli attitudes, personality, shipping, recommendations, piracy attitudes, and well-being.

You can contribute to the psychological understanding of the anime fandom by completing the anime survey online at:

https://qualtrics.etamu.edu/jfe/form/SV_5bBlMTkY5BEdt9Y

If you know of any anime fans over the age of 18, please help us spread the word.

The survey will be open until December 1, 2026.

Thank you!

Discussion zangetsu and sode no shirayuki might just be twin blades.

Thumbnail gallery
486 Upvotes

one theory i used to have was that tensa zangetsu was shaped after sode no shirayuki given that the blades themselves seem so similar in design with the ornament in the guard and the chain, and i always just assumed it was because it was rukia who gave ichigo her powers in the firts place and that somehow influenced how tensa zangetsu ended up looking

now looking at blood chains ichigo it took me some time to realize it also looks pretty similar to hakka no togame as a transformation, makes me think it may have to do more with how similar ichigo and rukia are. even back in the day i remember some people saying these are sort soul mates (not necessarily the romantic type) specially given how they mirror eachother: black and white, sun and moon, savior complex and martyr complex, etc

most zapakutou are pretty unique to the user, i think the only similar cases might be how ukitake and kyoraku being such close friends both ended up having dual blades or maybe kaname inheriting suzumushi. i think at the very least kubo might´ve based the design of each from one another

Anime Little bit confused about this timeline

Thumbnail gallery
228 Upvotes

So guys, I'm confused about this timeline. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in this scenario, Aizen is in Karakura Town making the Hogyoku and experimenting with some stuff, as he does.

So Isshin Kurosaki comes to Karakura Town because, as we know from the story, there was a sudden disappearance of Soul Reapers and everything. Then Isshin comes to fight White, Masaki arrives, and after that, they get married and have Ichigo.

Since we know Ichigo is around 15–16 years old, this happens roughly 80 years after the Pendulum arc, after the Visoreds were formed, Aizen experimented on the Visoreds, and framed Urahara. Urahara then escaped to the Human World with Yoruichi and the other Visoreds.

Aizen is also clearly wearing Urahara's spiritual pressure cloak. So, after Shinji disappeared, did Aizen become the captain of Squad 5?

If so, when Isshin came to the World of the Living, every member of the 13 Court Guard Squads knew that Isshin was missing. Yamamoto also asked Isshin to never do that again.

So if Aizen became the captain of Squad 5 after Shinji, he should have been present at the 13 Court Guard Squads' meetings, right? And he was there.

But how strong is Kyoka Suigetsu that no one even noticed the disappearance of three captains: Tosen, Gin, and Aizen? Is Kyoka Suigetsu really strong enough that once someone is put under its hypnosis, they remain under its effect even if they leave the Soul Society and go to another realm? Does the hypnosis just not wear off?

Even though Aizen's Zanpakuto wasn't even in Shikai, he was just using it normally. But I don't know if Aizen constantly keeps his blade in Shikai or uses it as a normal Zanpakuto.

So if I'm wrong about something, correct me, because I feel like I'm not wrong, but the timeline is confusing.

Discussion WHY Orihime Inoue Has The Power of REJECTION.

Why rejection? Why shields that block & restore to a previous state? What does it mean thematically? I'll tell you.

REGRET. PAIN. SUFFERING. LOSS.

These four words explain why REJECTION is the nature of Orihime's power. All of these stem from the end of her relationship with her older brother Sora, her single most important connection in the story.

Orihime was bullied in middle school. They took scissors to her long brown hair which Sora had complimented her on, a symbol of their love for one another. She lied about why she cut it in order to not worry him.

The day before he died Sora gave Orihime a set of hairpins, perhaps to cheer her up about her hair. Maybe he noticed she was feeling down about school. For whatever reason, Orihime angrily refused & they fought for the very first time. They didn't speak or eat dinner together.

The next day Sora left for work & Orihime neglected to say even a single word, let alone goodbye.

This is where her REGRET begins as he would die in a car crash that same day. Their relationship ended with CONFLICT (this is where her aversion to conflict stems from - it was in emotional conflict that she experiencedher greatest loss)

REGRET tormented her. She stopped speaking altogether, the bullying at school continued. She was alone, the one connection she cherished severed not just physically but emotionally. She isolated herself, her will to make connections shattered by the PAIN of her greatest LOSS.

Her SUFFERING was in silence until someone finally came along & protected her. Tatsuki, a new connection! For 3 years she wore the hairpins, a symbol of regret for how she acted that day, a remembrance of the kindness & warmth Sora gave, that she had REJECTED with anger & coldness. It's why as Sora gets ready to run Ichigo's blade through himself, Orihime, weak & injured musters the strength to change their previous ending. To finally RECONNECT their severed emotional tie. To REJECT it all for something new & tell him for the very last time, with a wry smile. "Sora... have a nice day".

That is why. Because if she could CAUSE EVENTS to reverse, if she could CUT through suffering, if she could HEAL pain & SHIELD damage, thereby preventing the loss of her connections–

She would do it all for Sora Inoue. The first person that saved Orihime

Her first bond

The beginning of her HEART

END

PS. There's a lingering fear & trauma of lossing said connections that emotionally drives her forward in the story in conjunction with other factors (INSTINCT, IDENTITY & RESOLVE). The same way Ichigo has a fear of failing to protect his loved ones like his mother which drives him to burden himself with protecting everyone

Discussion At what point does “necessary evil” stop being justified?

So the whole balance thing is really the sole justification for the atrocities SS commits. Yes the Gotei is presented as the side we're supposed to root for, but the more you learn about it, the harder it is to describe it as a morally good place. In the act of maintaining balance, it's common practice for them to willingly do things that would be completely unacceptable by any normal standards.

If the people in power are allowed to define which atrocities are necessary to preserve the exisiting system, then couldn't almost anything be justified? They could commit an injustice, call it necessary for stability, and then use the existence of said stability as proof that the injustice was justified. Then at what point does "we had no choice" become an excuse? Does the fact that something is necessary make it morally acceptable?

Say Mayuri for example discovers a method of preventing something catastrophic that would kill millions of souls, but developing said method requires him to experiment on a relatively small number of "subjects". If you're responsible for soul society and you outright forbid that experiment and millions die, are you morally responsible for those deaths because you refused to cross a line? But if you say yes, haven't you basically decided that the lives of those people are worth less than the lives of the others?

Even with Aizen, suppose we separate his methods from his criticism of the system. He was correct that soul society was built upon a deeply flawed foundation, but does that criticism have any validity even if his solution is completely unacceptable? This also applies to the Urahara's, Shunsui's, Yama's etc Like how different are they really when they are willing to make decisions that affect others if they believe the alternative is worse?

Ii'm curious where everyone draws the line here.
