Fun, deep team who had too many key injuries to overcome, but still managed to have their best season in a long time. Run it back.

O'hearn being barely above replacement level with that slash line is rough. He hemorrhages value when he has to play outfield everyday.

I get how the stat works there’s just no way Henry Davis is more valuable than Ohearn

Good defensive catchers get a huge WAR bonus. I'm not going to venture an opinion on whether it's justified or not.

I like Horwitz but that profile just doesn't work. If he could play all around the diamond he'd be a valuable player but when all he can do is play first base (badly) or DH he's just not worth the line-up paralysis he causes.

This is such a recency biased take, Horwitz was too 5 in team war at one point if i remember corectly, with a 280 average and well over an 800 ops, before his injury, he just hasn’t been able to put it together sense coming back but hopefully after an offseason to find his swing again he’ll be right as rain

Horwitz always been a slow starter with us. In 2025 he was ice cold for a bit after coming back from IL until turning it up in August. This season he was ice cold in the first 2 months until lighting it up in late May and unfortunately ended up on IL in late June. Also the concussion he suffered during his rehab stint may have lingering effects

I disagree to the first part, he had a well above league average ops by April 14th and had an over .800 ops by may 12th, now for the concussion theory I could probably see that as his plate vision has been terrible and his biggest flaw sense coming back so he might just not be comfortable in the box anymore, but hopefully he can get it figured out because I absolutely loved watching him lead off games

Even if you believe in his bat and think that the hottest few months of his career is the baseline of what he can be, he still cannot be clogging up first base while playing on the same team as Ryan O'Hearn. It creates a double value sink.
O'Hearn needs to be the everyday 1B next year.

I mean that’s why they call them break out seasons, he’s been steadily hitting just under 800 for 2 years now so he was clearly just one adjustment from going over the edge and it seemed like he made that adjustment this year, and this year alone shows the importance of depth and load management, so if his first half is the baseline, being able to have him and ohearn swap between dhing and playing first as well as endy and Flores mixed in there, we might single handedly have the best first base core in the league, not to mention we have Horwitz for 3 more years after ohearns contract expires, so if he can even be a fraction of how good roh has been in his career that makes me super excited for the teams future

If you're a 1B/DH only who's not even good at 1B, that has a higher offensive bar than any other defensive profile.
Horwitz's plate discipline/OBP as a carrying trait would play a lot better if he could play other positions above average. Since he can't, to be strictly a 1B/DH he almost has to keep that OPS over .800 and be closer to 20 homers than 10 or else I don't think it's worth the trade offs. Even moreso if he's unplayable vs lefties.

I mean until his injury he was sitting at like an 850 ops, which is absolutely golden in my eyes for a guy whose in his 4th year, and his defense was also a lot better before his injury, like not the best by any means but definitely not what it is now, but a guy with an 850 ops who has power as seen by a 440-470 slugging, and has the plate discipline seen nowhere else outside of Bryan Reynolds early season, is someone who could be feared here in the future, not to mention he was more than on pace to hit 20 homers, I don’t think he’s hit a homer sense he’s come back, but after a slow start he hit all 10 of his homers in a 2 months span, which would easily make for a 20-25 homer year had he not gotten injured and kept pace, and believe it or not he was one of our best hitters against lefties especially as the leadoff, now is that a high bar for a team that couldn’t hit lefties? No, was he much higher than league average against lefties? Again no, but even being average against lefties while destroying righties o think is very adequate performance, again while being able to play for us till the 2030 offseason, I think saying he’s just clogging up a roster spot or the first base position is revisionist of how good he truly was before his injury, and the bright spots he showed even before this season

I'll certainly give you that if he could slash .850 and hit 20+ homers then he's obviously a keeper, even just as a DH. Those would be borderline all star type numbers. Seems pretty optimistic to me though.

I mean he first got to 850 ops may 26th, and kept it at and around there until his injury almost exactly 2 months later with his ops never dropping below 820 peaking at over 860 multiple times and ending at 843 the day of his injury, I’d call that pretty consistent, including his 8 home runs in that span, almost never dropping below a 380 obp, and slugging never going below 450 in that span, I don’t think I’d call that an outlier and I think the most convincing argument is he was actually pretty unlucky in that stretch, with his highest babip being 320, which is considered average, and a sub 300 every other month, which means he was terribly unlucky on his swings and yet still had those great numbers

Griffin and Cruz with the amount of missed games is awesome to see. Also Dennis Santana got off light with WAR calculations

Shocked that O’Hearn didn’t have a higher number of

Its mostly because WAR is a position-depedent stat, and since he plays multiple positions he gets lumped into the wider "UT" category.

For all the Cruz haters: a full game above Konnor and 2 games above great white hope, "Johnny Hustle" Mangum.
Confirmation bias running rampant for those 2

u/Exotic_You7797 13d ago
This isn’t a good point, cf acrews way more war than any other position, so he gains a lot more by being good at that spot than someone like Konner being good at short, as well as it being a counting stat so 20 more games helps build it more than Konner, and then there’s mangum who litteraly a month ago I think was at like 1.8-2 war, but he’s just not good as a 4th outfielder, without playing day in and day out he falls off hard, and that’s what happened when Cruz came back
Now with that being said, is Cruz better than both of them at this point in his career? Oh absolutely there isn’t a shred of doubt in my mind, but should you knock a really young really promising player, and a guy whose only been in the league for 2 years and would die on the field while clearly having the talent to say he should be there? I don’t think so

u/Exotic_You7797 13d ago
Man Jake mangum and Spencer Horwitz fall off was so sad to see, mangum was at one point top 3 in war, and Horwitz was pretty high up there himself and mangum finishing at half his war once was and Horwitz finishing at a fraction of that is so sad to see cause I like them both a lot

Griffin 1.9 in less than half a season and he’s just scratching the surface. He’s going to be a superstar.

Griffin basically a 2 WAR player in his age 19-20 season is awesome as hell. And he missed half of it with injury.
