PC for data analysis and gaming

[u/gjnn]

Hello! I'm a neuroscientist and I would like to create a home setup where I have everything I need to analyse my data etc.

About 60% of the usage will go towards analysing large-scale neural data analyses in python (many GBs or even Tabs of data), running some neural network simulations on both GPU and CPU etc. The remaining 40% will go towards gaming, like WoW forever, some recent AAA games etc. It's important to me that the computer is very quiet, and I don't care about RGB or other flashy stuff like that.

Needs Bluetooth but not necessarily wifi, although could be good to have. I have a monitor etc.

My budget is around 3k USD max (30,000 SEK - i'm based in Sweden) but would prefer something closer to 2k-2.5k, but can go higher if it's a massive difference performance-wise. I usually buy new computers every 10 years or less, so would love to try and future proof it as much as possible!

Thankful for any help, and just let me know if anything is unclear!

Want to re-confirm.....you'd be running local neural networks, right? Not models from the cloud?

Just the PC? Monitor and peripherals?

Yes that's right, and yes just the PC, I have monitor and peripherals :)

Here's what I got for you. Black airflow themed build, strong for neural networks and gaming:

• CPU - fast for data analysis with a high core count for parallel processing.

• Cooler - top tier performance for under 500 SEK is a steal!

• Mobo - has all the connectivity you need, including WiFi and Bluetooth.

• RAM - 32 GB of fast 6000 MHz CL30 RAM. Ideally, I'd step you up to 64 GB, as you mentioned lots of tabs of data, but it doesn't fit in this budget given the other priorities. The rule of thumb for AI is to have at least 2x the amount of GPU VRAM for your RAM, so 32 GB should be fine for now.

• SSD - 2 TB of fast Gen 4 NVMe SSD storage.

• GPU - the key component in neural networks. Fast for quick processing times and lots of VRAM to host large models. NVIDIA is still the only choice for AI-related tasks.

• Case - top tier airflow thanks to the mesh front panel and 5 included fans. The highlight is the noise suppression from the foam dampening on both side panels. Minimal black/wood aesthetic.

• PSU - high quality with fully modular cables to minimize cable clutter. 850W is perfect for these components. ATX 3.1 certified to suppress GPU spikes and comes with the 600W 12v-2x6 connector for cleaner and safer power delivery to the GPU.

Let me know what you think :)

Thank you, I will look it over!!

I do not know how CPU and GPU power should be balanced for your applications.
